I was going to go "no curriculum" this year and just teach math. At this grade level, I think it is quite possible to do so - just get a scope and sequence and do it. I love Math-It, and it's scope and sequence with a few math textbooks for reference would do it, in my opinion. I love Ruth Beechick's ideas in the 3R's, I love math games -- it can be done.
However, I have this little problem called "procrastination" that holds us back. I needed something to actually follow and feel we were keeping up with it. I was already familiar with Math-U-See, having used it years ago - and that was what I decided to go with.
Both Robbie and Isaac are loving it. Isaac - though I thought this beyond him him beyond this - loves building numbers with the MUS manipulatives. Then writing the numbers out and seeing it both ways. Because he loves it, tells me that it taught him something. It made something click with him. It made sense, to the point of seeming fun.
Here's a picture of him loving Math-U-See:

thanks for sharing this! I've been letting our girls "play" with Cuisenaire rods over the past few weeks. We don't really "do" math with them, but they sure have fun with them.
I like your article about kissing them at home instead of sending them off with a kiss on a piece of paper. Thanks for sharing some of the things you remember from your kindergarten days... that is one more "dose" of encouragement that we (homeschooling moms) need to know that we're making the right choice.

Oct. 4, 2007 - We LOVE Math-u-see!
This year is our first experience with the program. We happen to really enjoy watching the instructor on the video - I find him completely hilarious in his dry sense of humor. DD watches the video with me and we pause it as he asks questions and I have her answer before his "class" does. She's been doing several lessons a day this way and never tires of it. First time since we started homeschooling that she ASKS for a subject! lol
