snow...we are expecting snow

Posted in school n stuff

Snow is a big deal around here...we don't get it very often...and of course if is forecast for the afternoon\night BEFORE the morning that we need to get up REALLY early to drive to Lawton for a field trip...of course, that is when we will get it...I HATE driving in snow...I love to see it snow, but driving in it...not for me.....snow is meant for times when you have NO WHERE TO GO.....do you hear me mother nature???

The space shuttle is coming....was coming...is coming....shoot when it gets here it is here....it was supposed to be here yesterday...delayed...now it is looking like Tuesday....when it gets here we will try to get pics!....the town we live very near is an airforce town & is the midway stop for the shuttle when they are transporting it back to florida...very cool for us!!!

Oh yes, our field trip...we are going on a field trip to chop down a christmas tree & have an old timey christmas decorating party....this is at the one room school house....very neat little place....and tis free we like free.....gotta rmember not to forget the camera!

Friday was our last day of co-op until January....yeah....we like co-op...but every Friday was a bit much...starting in January it will be every other Friday...I'm loving that!

busy christmas activities & a concoction

Posted in school n stuff

First off I just dumped in a bunch of stuff in the crock pot for a concoction I call chicken chili...I don't know if that is really what it is, but we call it that & my kids love it.

  • chicken..frozen chicken tenders..nope I didn't even defrost them.
  • a can of tomatoes
  • a  drained can of navy beans
  • a can of drained whole kernal corn
  • enough chicken stock to cover
  • a big palmful of chili powder

and cornbread is in the oven to go with it.......so when we get home tonight dinner is just a matter of sit down & eat & then clean up.

Now to my post for today......ok maybe it is just me, maybe I'm just built this way , but I do not understand how people we can be on "GO" all the time....we have an EXTREMELY busy next few days..up through Monday is cram packed.......and then next Wed. is just INSANE........why people feel the need to cram everything into the first week of December is beyond me..there is an entire month before Christmas gets here people....spread it around why don't ya...

but after next Wed. life is all about RELAXING....hehehehe

I have this one mom friend whom I think alot of, she is a good friend, but my gosh she NEVER stops....I have no idea how she does it.......she seems to thrive on  "going, going, going," and "doing, doing, doing".... .....I would have died from exhaustion with her schedule....I like time at home, I like relaxing with my kids..........no we are not bums far from it, but I have a point where I get all bent out of shape when I get too busy......I can only handle so much.....and I have come to the realization that I DO NOT LIKE evening activities.....yes sometimes they are unavoidable, but I like being home & ready for bed early.....doesn't always happen but it sure makes me feel good when it does.

Thanksgiving week

Posted in school n stuff

is upon us...

I have plans for this week...different plans that usual...

Yes we will still accomplish some schooling, you know that math just WON'T go away.....but it will not be a FULL week of schooling...Monday we are going to the high school preformance of Cinderella......a friend of our's daughter is playing the Fairy Godmother...how exciting!!!

Tuesday we are going bowling...since stopping the bowling league we haven't been bowling & though my kids were tired of it every week...they do still enjoy bowling..so we are going this week and meeting up with friends...Tuesday morning while certain kiddos...oh yes I mean THOSE kiddos of mine, are working on MATH  and other dreaded subjects I plan on CLEANING my room...YES I do intend to accomplish this....or at least get started on it...not that it is a HUGE mess but it does serve dual purposes as bedroom & office\computer area...it gets MESSY in here..

Today after church(and lunch) my living room & kitchen are getting the cleaning movement in their direction....yep living room & kitchen HERE WE COME.....it must be clean before the tree can go up!

Wed...you guessed it more ..ugh..sigh...math.....and more cleaning..before guitar..we are off of choir this week due to the public schools being out.....

Thurs....aahh...Turkey Day..without the turkey...my kids said no turkey since dad is not going to be here..so they requested pizza..not sure they will get their request but they aren't getting turkey...lol...and we will put the christmas decorations out including the tree...that would be why the living room needs a good cleaning..

Friday..now Friday is still up in the air, my kids LOVE going to the black friday sales..getting up early & fighting the crowds..but I don't know this year..there isn't much that I have seen on sale worth getting out of bed for yet....and it isn't like  my checkbook is screaming "I HAVE MONEY SPEND ME"...infact it is more like it is screaming.."I HAVE NO MONEY HIDE ME"...AAAAAAA

as for next weekend...who knows yet.....A. is going to her friend's house Sat..it is her friend's birthday...and D. will probably be working..so it may just be me & Sarah Sat.....we shall see ...

First day of co-op

Posted in school n stuff

We had our first day of  co-op today...a few  descriptive words:

  • exhausting..I'm NOT used to pre-k\Kinder kids
  • exhausting...I'm not used to that many kids no matter what age
  • mind boggling..trying to figure out where everyone needs to be
  • proud...I was prepared, I sent my kids with index cards with their classes listed...my kids had NO trouble finding their classes....can't say that for everyones kids...
  • proud...my son rose to the occasion of keeping a class of 1st-3rd graders busy for an hour...and no one cried!
  • frustrating..kids not listening...but that is nothing unusual
  • exciting....new people, learning new things
  • hilarious..my child has an obsession with Elvis Presley..and it shows!
  • tiring...mentally, not used to THAT many kids anymore
  • loud...lots of kids
  • appreciative....I happy to have only MY kids to bring home from co-op:)
  • happy...leaving my kids were all in a buzz, they had a great time...so happy that I gave them this experiance...and they actually learned a few things too!
  • enlightened...I even learned a few things!

So am I looking forward to next week....I wouldn't go so far as to say that....but then again it is 10:25 at night on the night of the first day of co-op & I have been awake since 5am....but I do know my kids are looking forward to next Friday already....sigh

How do homeschool mom's get it all done...a small rant

Posted in school n stuff

  • How do they get the housework done?
  • How do they get the yardwork done?
  • How, when you have a teenager who is working get all their lessons accomplished in a timely manner?
  • How, when you have animals & all this other stuff do you get their needs taken care of?
  • When do I find time to clean the car out?
  • Is the shed ever going to be able to be walked through again?
  • Are the clothes in my room ever going to get put away in the drawer?

Ok don't write me telling me a about flylady, don't tell me schedualing, don't tell me to have the kids help out more (trust me THEY HELP).....I know all these things....what I don't know is...how do I.....

.

.

.

.

.add about 8 more hours into the day......UGH

I need a colgon take me away night....sigh

Overwhelmed

Posted in school n stuff

Sometimes I just feel so overwhelmed with my life and all we have going on.Being the only parent in the house most of the times adds to it i think. When your husband has a job that keeps him away from the house most of the time and everything seems to fall on your shoulders it just gets so..so..aaaaaa...

It is even worse when the hubby is home because then things must work around him...and you know what .....it is hard enough already not working around him...throw him into the mix & WOW....frustration sets in..

As I made out a schedule for our week I thought about it....we are REALLY busy...but not just at activities, at around the house things also.....between school lessons, chores, animals, teenager working a job....who has time for ANYTHING....

so I am trying this schedule thing...I listed everything for each day that needs to be done & a few things I'd LIKE to get done......I'm even listing lunch & dinner so if I need to  oh say soak beans for the next day I don't forget it(hopefully)......ok so the needs to get done on the list has happened...... the like to get done..not so much...but today is a new day...lol  I think for next week I will put each day on an index card & put the index cards on the front of the fridge.

so today we are home all day long...I love days that we are home all day...I am selfish that way., but I also accomplish more or at least try to..lol on those days.

Overwhelmed is also having a new dog in the house......don't know for sure if he is staying yet or not..if we can't ind his owner or a new home for him...he is adorable...he gets along well with the kids & the other dogs...but 4 dogs IN THE HOUSE.....UGH....I told D last night if he ends up staying (which I really don't mind, he is a sweety) we HAVE to build some sort of pen outside that none ..not even the small chi who weighs 3.6 lbs and can squeaze through cyclone fencing ) can get out of........we live too close to the road & our fencing is just not good enough at keeping the dogs in...BUT I can't stand 4 dogs in the house under my feet  ALL THE TIME...sometimes you just gotta say GO OUTSIDE...lol

Overwhelmed is also trying to get ALL the schoolwork accomplished in 4 days instead of 5...and yes we could work 6 days a week...but I need a break & I know the kids do too....having Saturdays off is something we need around here  and besides D is working every Sat. now anyway so that would just put him a day behind us & he is working hard enough as it is.....so Co-op starts this Friday....ugh...ummm...ok I have mix feelings over this...really i do...I am committing to it for the first semester...but it is on a trial basis...we will see how it goes.....

so in a nutshell...i just feel overwhelmed right now....sigh

getting school work done

Posted in school n stuff

Getting school work done has been hard this past week, with the homeschool group starting back up(ugh...why did i say I would help with so much) & all the activities going on again...and now add a teen age son working about 30 hours a week(sometimes it has been more) into the mix...whew....this is exhausting...

D's job has made him so happy he has extra spending $, he is putting money away in the bank for a pick up truck , but trying to get lessons done has been challenging, even he has admitted this. I just keep telling myself one part of the job(building two additions & refoofing) is done, now all they have to do is paint.then that will be over......and the tire shop is only on Satudays(for now)....oh yeah I forgot the watermelon picking...that isn't done yet either (all of this btw is for the same family down the road from us)

one good thing is driving distance, if he is working on the house or the watermelons..he walks or rides his bike...NO GAS SPENT...hehehe....if he is working at the tire shop sometime I have to take & pick him up but sometimes the owner(down the road neighbor) picks him up or drops him off depending on his schedule.....but the times I have to take\get him it is only about a 10 mile round trip...SOOOO much better than if he worked in the big town we do everything in then I would spend an hour just driving him back & forth.

numerous times i have had to turn the lights off because D. has fallen asleep while doing his lessons the boy is trying so hard to keep up, I am so proud of him....and he is still working on projects\chores around the house as much as possible..tonight he bushhogged the ENTIRE back field..ours & the grandparents house....he works so hard...i'm gonna miss that boy when he is gone....ok so he is never allowed to leave home..lol

well for A. fractions are going MUCH better than ancicipated....I figured we would be working on the rule of four for 3 months, but by golly she is getting it!!!she is up with the sun every morning & the first one done with all her lessons....she loves doing schoolwork....she loves checking off her accomplishments...she is a list person...lol......if all 3 off my kids were like her school would be such a breeze!

S. she is almost like her sister...not quite but close...she has melt downs though if things do not go her way, of if the answer is wrong...how dare it be wrong..she KNOWS what she is doing...she is a perfectionist...sigh ....and it shows.

A little math funny

Posted in school n stuff

NEW YORK -- A public school teacher was arrested today at John F. Kennedy
International Airport
as he attempted to board a flight while in possession
of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide rule and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, the Attorney General said he believes the man
is a member of the notorious Al-gebra movement.

He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying
weapons of math instruction. 'Al-gebra is a problem for us', the
Attorney
General
said. 'They desire solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go
off on tangents in search of absolute values.'

They use secret code names like 'X' and 'Y' and refer to themselves as
'unknowns', but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator
of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country.

As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'There are 3 sides to every
triangle'.

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, 'If God had wanted
us to have better weapons of math instruction, he would have given us more
fingers and toes.'

It's that time again

Posted in school n stuff

time to get the school schedule all worked out..

  • M...piano..& swimming
  • T....home all day long
  • W..Choir, guitar,swimming, & grocery buying
  • Th...home all day , except for once a month evenings for hs group meetings
  • F..Co-op...and possibly swimming some weeks.
  • Sa..try to be home all day & accomplish things around the house
  • Sun..church..and still giving thought to church in the evenings on Sun, we didn't do it last year & the kids missed it, but I enjoy the evenings at home on Sun to get things ready for the next week.

of course, I still have to get regular house, yard, animal stuff all accomplished, along with schoolwork...and working around hubb's work schedule & having to go get him & take him back to the truck...which I now have to drive an hour each way to take him back and forth to work.

The joys of being a homeschool mom...and truckers wife.....I suppose...sigh

The year is winding down

Posted in school n stuff

We have one more week of activities and running around then the "homeschool school year" will officially be over...and none too soon ..the gas is killing me I filled up last nigh to the tune of $3.59 a gallon...YIKES.

So next week we will have our last bowling which will be a party, the bowling alley will feed us pizza & give the kids their awards....free lunch!
Next week is the last skating, which we will not go to...long story , then we have 7-up club which I haven't decided if we will go to or not...probably not.
I'm tired of going, I'm sick of paying huge prices in my gas tank just to "go"...I need a break.
Next Friday is also our annual end of the year celebration, I haven't even decided if we are going to do that yet or not...my kids are divided on it and I have not given any thought to giving them anything...we might go & just not participate.

Today is the last art class! The kids will be making their own "creations"...COOKIES...editable paint & cookie dough....this should be interesting...lol

For us individually next week is my kids last music lesson for the year also...we opted not to continue guitar over the summer and Dustin is ok with it..I need the break, he loves guitar, but the price & the gas..I needed a break...and Amber always stops piano for the summer anyway.

So until August we are free!!!!

yesterday wasn't so bad...

Posted in school n stuff

I had a couple of good things happen..

*when  I stopped to buy milk at Braums not only do they have hormone free milk(cows) their milk was 50 cents a gallon CHEAPER than wally!!!!....I will definitely be buying milk there once a week instead of at wally....& next time I will buy my butter & eggs there too(until we get chicks again)... btw, I didn't need butter & eggs yesterday..
* and Amber's piano teacher & I were talking yesterday & I told her that we did find Dustin a new guitar teacher(his old one is moving I told ya'll that right?)..anyway I mentioned I wasn't thrilled about guitar gonna be on Fridays, but that was all we could get for now.....because that means another trip into town....SHE said well then lets move piano to Fridays after guitar!!!!..see I didn't want to ask..she had already rearrange her schedule to fit ours for Mondays...but she was YES lets move to Fridays it works  for me.....so next week Amber won't do Piano on Monday she will wait till Friday & D. will start guitar on Friday next week too....WORKS GREAT!!

ok so that might not seems like much but in my world it is WONDERFUL

Hold on here we go....

Posted in school n stuff

So far so good...we are starting school back up today...I thought they would be mortified... they actually started working last night as they so often do....I love it when they do that!!! And this time Sarah was the one to pull out her books first, usually it is Amber.....YES! she is wearing off on her little sister...lol Dustin wasn't so thrilled, but then he never is..shaking head...but he isn't gonna let his little sisters outdo him either....evil grin

My goal is to do some doubling up & finish "this year's school" by the first of May....can we do it??? hang on to your bootstraps we are gonna try!! The kids are all for it...I want to be able to "play" in the garden in April in May..so Jan-March they are gonna be doing LOTS of lessons...to cold to be outside anyway!

sick day

Posted in school n stuff

Looks like we are calling in a sick day today, the girls are both sick ....my son & I both had it last week ...now it is their turn. This messes up the entire weeks nice and neatly laid out lesson plans....oh well...no point in making eveyone miserable...we will do some laying on the couch & reading today...that way I can still count it as a"school day"...

So no AG today & no piano lessons either, but later I will take D. to guitar lessons...the girls can stay in the car with me.

Maybe I can get a few things done around the house today...we'll see...

D is still going to work on some of his lessons, his individual work....yep slave driver I am...lol

Back to school shopping

Posted in school n stuff

 hehehehehe....lol.....I can't help but laugh....

all the public school ppl are shopping for clothes and lunch boxes and school supplies....well our shopping is  little different than theirs isn't it..

pencils..lots off pencils...the couch seems to devour them...

well yesterday while at wally I stocked up...BIG TIME

not on pencils...not on glue sticks, not on spirals(boy do we use a lot of spirals).....besides I already bought all those...LONG time ago....but on "lunch box goodies"....lol...as I was walking the store the thought was running through my head that what I was buying was all things I used to  put in the kids lunch boxes..

  • apple sauce cups
  • pudding cups
  • peanut butter\cheese crackers
  • fruit cups
  • juice boxes
  • beef jerky
  • water bottles
  • cheese sticks
  • 100 calorie snack bags
  • etc...I bought LOTS of goodies

now you may be asking WHY are you buying all this...well...last year during activities the kids always wanted a drink, a snack..a "something" inbetween bowling & guitar, or AG & bowling or whatever the case may be....BUT THIS YEAR.....shaking head...NOT HAPPENING.....NO, NO, NO....not happening...

they can pick a snack & a drink from the "snack box"...literally  yes a snack box it is sitting above the washer .....I have a small collapsible ice chest....the snacks are going with us this year I REFUSE to spend money on snacks everyweek....and the snack box is JUST for days we go out of the house....

the kids are incharge of their own snack & drink if they want it cold it is THEIR responsibility to put it in the fridge the night before...that it going to be added to their evening chore list..

I figure those small little convience items will totally outweigh the cost of buying eveyone a drink & snack while out & about. during our activities......and believe me when we leave bowling we are ALL thirsty...and the bowling alley's drinks are NOT CHEAP.

The Lord does work in mysterious ways! I have been fretting over the kids not doing bowling...well I should be more trusting..shouldn't I!

Today we got word that there is a FREE music class(singing lessons) at one of the churches in town...will last all school year long.....my youngest is THRILLED...singing is her thing!  So now all 3 of the kids will have one thing of their own...d has guitar lessons, A has piano lessons(s, doesn't want to continue piano), & S will have singing.....then the girls are both going to do a free art class...D doesn't care to participate..that is ok..he is ok with them doing it & not him...he has paint balling...lol...

~Responsibility~

Posted in school n stuff

Our word of the week is responsibility...the kids have to learn to spell it & memorize the definition...ok the definition they know already that one is easy but my 9yr says ...ok I think we might need a little more than a week on this word( in her very best hick sounding launguage)..spelling it is NOT that easy.....LOL...but knowing her by Friday she will be able to spell it..

~~Mistakes are Opportunities to Learn~~

Posted in school n stuff

the first full week of school went off without to many problems....sarah cried with spelling EVERY SINGLE DAY....now how did that happen?....she is such a perfectionist if she doesn't get things correct she gets frustrated and then here comes the waterworks....I have got to figure a way out to get her to realize that mistakes are ok.......they aren't the end of the world.

so I made our new motto up and wrote it on the board.....it reads "mistakes are opportunities to learn"...we chanted this over & over....did it do any good? not that i see yet, but we are still working on it...

on the good side

they all really like the hands of a child OK state history...and I have a few more HOAC books they are REALLY looking forward to...they all are LOVING doing devotions, character words, spelling, grammar & geography together each day....except for the whole tears thing with sarah but it is simply the fact that her bro & sis are older than her and have "gotten " the spelling faster than she has..but she likes doing it all together.

I think I will give them this week the same work load except for I'm gonna add music appreciation to our daily things we are doing together then next Monday I will add regular history & science into the mix....yes that means we will be doing 2 history's at once....but that is ok, they can handle it...lol
I didn't get many complaints at all about having to do school work again..in fact I even got a few "hey this is fun comments out of them"
they all really enjoyed doing the character word of the week too ,this week was punctuality...they had to memorize its spelling & defination and try to abide by it...they did pretty good...although  I'm thinking charater word of the week is gonna be hard now, maybe I need to make it charater word of every 2 weeks ...are there that many character words for me to come up with to have one every week?
the girls are both enjoying their handwriting books....they have a competion going as to who can do it the neatest.
now i just hope next week goes as well....actually better
