Trials...

The other day was really fun.  Abby has learned about the letters A, M, S, and F so far.  Today was "f".
When you add a new letter, they make words with it and the previous letter.  So, it was anything from same (e is silent) to mass.  She was getting stuck on Sam.  For some reason, she kept saying "Smam".  I can't believe how incredibly patient I was with her about this.

It was actually very frustrating to her and me, but surprisingly enough, I kept my cool.  I was the Ice Queen.  I was Super Kewl.  That's me.

Anyway, she kept trying to giggle/cry.  I was telling her, "You're being silly" and I laughed to make it funny.  I wasn't making fun of her, I was trying to get her to not take herself so seriously.

It was hilarious, but I was doing good.

Finally, she said it right.  "Sam"  I was very encouraging and enthusiastic.  "That was great!! See?  You were making it harder than it was, huh?"  She nodded and then went back to her work.

I am one of those that took myself way to seriously in school.  I was doing bad if I was making B's in a class.  It's mainly bc I was having trouble understanding the material.  Really.  But, a B to me in school was bad.

I'm not really sure I want her to be that serious about her grades.  I just want her to learn and be satisfied that she is doing her best.  Not perfect, but her best.

That's all I really want.

Mar. 9, 2006 - Teaching Reading!

Posted by KarlaKAkins
I think teaching reading to our own children is soooooo much harder than teaching reading to other people's kids because we are so emotionally wrapped up in their pain and successes! That empathy-mother-thing is hard for me. I feel their frustration so much. I have four sons and it was hard for all of them to learn to read. I have a student in our cottage school who is just barely five and she can read just about anything now! I taught her to read, too -- and I didn't do anything different!

I remember my first son. The poor child. That first kid gets the benefit of all our horrible mistakes. I pushed him too hard. No matter how hard I pushed him, though, he still needed to stay in first grade another year. Once he was in 7th grade he caught up that "lost" year just fine! He couldn't spell very well until age 16! Something just clicks late with boys, I guess.

I didn't mean to make this post a lesson -- I just love teaching reading and I know how different it is for boys and girls sometimes! :-)

I have a little guy right now I'm teaching (not my own child) who cannot remember from one day to the next (he's 8 years old) the sounds of his letters. We are using Tucker signing stragies now and it has helped him a lot.

Thanks for the great post, "Miss Ice Queen!" Way to go!! :-)

Love,
Karla

hope you are feeling well and things are going great with you. I'm saving up a little at a time to get some school materials. Thanks for turning me on to it...I just can't say it enough. It's nice to have just finally decided that "this is what we are going to do"...

hope you're doing well and that the babes are well!

Apr. 10, 2006 - Grades

Posted by MaxwellAcademy
I was so hung up on grades in school, I decided when we began homeschooling there would be NO grading whatsoever! And we still don't. We know how well they are doing by whether or not they know the material. If my oldest is struggling with a math technique, then we go over it and over it, or skip it for a while then come back to it later, until he completely grasps it. That way he isn't reminded by a bad grade on a paper and relates that as to his self-worth (I know I sure did). We just do something in as many ways as needed until it is learned, that's what learning is all about!

I love your pregnancy chart on your blog. By my calculations, you may have a baby by now or you're getting really close?
