When we lived in Hawaii we had a whole dining room to do the main portion of our schooling. Additionally, we had a full GIANT walk in closet to store must of our stuff, as well as ample wall space for timelines, maps, etc. Now, in our new home (also military housing) that just is not the case. We'd had to manage making the extra bedroom into a functioning schooling area. DH requested that the homeschool stuff didn't take up our entire downstairs as it did in Hawaii so this is what I came up with. It is still a work in progress. Better organization and more shelving is always needed. But it works for us.

This is what you see when standing at the door. The big window in front of my DD's desk gives us wonderful natural light, but we do have an overhead light we can use if needed. To the right of the photo is my scrapping area. You can see and read more about it at this blog entry.

This is at your right if you're standing at the door. The white bookcase (badly needs painted!) holds some of our science books, most of our nature study books, my beloved Educator Classics collection of books, and some other misc. books. On top is our radio/cd player, electric pencil sharpener and a small hunk of books that DD has mentioned she wants to read soon. Above, the new cork tiles I put up and the $4.00 clock hang on the wall. The door has a hook on it that holds our nature study "messenger bag", my Girl Scout tote, and some Crayola marker tote. The brown box on the floor holds file folder games and felt board sets I made years ago that I can't quite part with yet. The stack of books on top, ignore those. That just some of the stuff I need to sell off.

Here is the rest of that wall. In the corner is my darling Holly Hobbie trash can ( I collect Holly Hobbie) and a plastic drawer unit that holds our art supplies. The dry erase board is actually a piece of shower board we bought in Hawaii from a hardware store. We had it cut into two sections, this is just one section. The map is from God's World News. She marks the location of the news stories she reads each day. The tall, narrow bookcase with the globe on top holds many of my "teacher" type books as well as an assortment of some of the books *I* want to read. The small pile on the floor to the right is the pile my DD makes daily as she completes assignments. She just puts her finished stuff down there.

Just DD working at her desk. The desk, I just LOVE. I bought it in Hawaii at a thrift store that was selling resort furniture they had. I got it for $15.00 I think. It is longer than normal desks and the drawers are nice and roomy. I like that not only does she have space to do her daily studies or drawings or whatever, but that it also holds her PC monitor and keyboard. She just moves the keyboard and mouse closer when using the PC. Note the two little heads sticking up at looking at her from the window sill. LOL Those are from Fandex sets I have... one is of Breugel and one of Schumann, our current artist and composer studies.
Okay don't fall off your chair when you see this next photo...

This is a giant oak bookcase I got from my mom. They'd gotten it from someplace that was throwing it out. It had been in a fire I guess. They refinished it beautifully and used it for years for their Fisher Price collection. Nowadays, I use it for the majority of our books! On top, unfortunately, is our board games. There just isn't any other place to put them right now, so there they are, hovering on the brink of falling off. LOL. Not really. I'm very good at stacking things. On the floor are yet more piles of stuff I need to sell off.

This shows another bookcase that holds some of our science kits and crafting kits. On top and to the right you can see some of my scrapbooking stuff. That is another blog post.
While our little homeschool room isn't the largest nor the fanciest, it works for us. I can be scrapbooking or lesson planning at my own table while DD works on her lessons. She just pulls up her chair to my worktable if we need to work on something together. If it is read aloud time, if we don't go downstairs on the couch she simply grabs a pillow and lays on the floor while I read. |
Wow!
