Literature Fair Insight

Per a  comment at my post about the literature fair I'm writing to explain a bit more about the event.

It was rather mandatory for our group.... either to PARTICIPATE or ATTEND the fair as a "viewer." I don't think that everyone showed up, but the turn out was large.

The literature fair allows everyone to participate... any age of the homeschool group kids AND the parents (if they wish, I just might do it next year actually, have my own display.) Or a child and parent can do a display together. Or a whole family can do one display.

The child merely reads a book (or is read to) and makes a display. They range from simple "book report" type sheets  to fancier displays with food, a craft on display, models, costumes, etc. Some displays had "interactive" elements (such as a civil war book display that asked questions and had lift-up answers below.) Younger participants either had their parent write up their display (I'd bet they had a nice discussion before hand and such) or else on their "fat-lined handwriting paper" scratched out their own writings. I loved seeing these especially when accompanied by their little ol' drawings. LOL Too CUTE!

Then the night of the fair we arrived 15 minutes early to set up. The tables were round with 2-3 displays per table as space would accommodate. The homeschool group provided a "comment sheet" and pencil at each display. This comment sheet was a favorite of my daughter. Passersby would view her display and leave a comment before moving to another display.

Participants were encouraged to stand at their display to answer questions, tell about their display/book, etc. but were ALSO encouraged to go see other people's displays (and leave comments too!)

It was a truly low-key event, with minimal set up (tables and rash cans, comments sheets/pens) and tear down. Participants only put in as much time and effort as they desired/could. Attendees walked around from display to display in any order they wished. Many took photographs (of course I forgot my camera!!AACK!) Food items were a big hit at any booths that offered some.

Truly this event is one that most any homeschool group could put on, no matter what age range they cater to. This event was closed to homeschool group members only to PARTICIPATE but was open to whomever wished to attend. My daughter took two other homeschool friends that aren't in the group. I don't know if there were any other "outsiders" or not, but there was a nice amount of dads there as well!

Hope this answers your question!

I love it when dads get involved in education! I'm glad there were lots of fathers there.

Thanks for sharing more details. I'm going to suggest this idea at our co-op. I love that it's something every age can do. Thanks again!
