Charlemagne and other fellows...

One of the things my daughter enjoys the most about her history lessons is her notebooking pages. She makes things, draws things, narrates, does mapwork, etc. all week long. Throughout the week she adds these items to her notebook pages .

We use a ProClick Binding machine to bind up her notebooks. (and many many other things!)

This week's notebook pages contain

  • a comparison of "Charlemagne's Empire" and some countries that make up that area today.  (maps provided by the Tapestry of Grace year 2 map aid disk) She colored the maps and filled out the key.
  • an oral narration of my daughter's that I typed up
  • a colored in image of Charlemagne (image from History through the Ages timeline figures CD)
  • an illustration of Pepin the Short getting crowned by the Pope to be King of the Franks (LOL, the papal hat looks a bit like an elf's hat!) with caption
  • an oral narration about King Egbert that i typed up
  • a "lift the flap" on Alfred the Great (upper blue) with an illustration of him, set in a frame from the Big Book of Projects by Dinah Zike
  • a "lift the flap" on Henry the Fowler" with an illustration of him, set in a frame from the Big Book of Projects by Dinah Zike

These notebooks are added to each week. We affectionately call this style of notebook "The Big Book of Everything: History" (or BBOE for short.) Just a silly name that by best online friend, Kay, and I came up with.... with a slight tip of the hat to the "Stanley" cartoon. Her daughter, who also uses Tapestry of Grace, but currently year one, also makes fabulous BBOE pages!

Anyway, with the ProClick binding system we're able to add pages as we go along, without all that bulk of 3-ring binders!

I really like your notebook. We will be using these for the first time this year. I just purchased the History Thru the Ages CD and Record of Time (I can't wait until they arrive.)

Will check back regularly to get ideas for our notebooks.

Blessings,
Amy

Thank You

This will be our first year of "real" notebooking and you give such great information on how your daughter completes this. I say "real" because we have been experimenting for the last couple of years but were afraid to really dive in. Now I am ready and love the ideas you give.

question about ntoebooking

Posted by lavendersblues
Great notebooking ideas!! So, I think I may buy one of those binder machines you linked. But I have a question first: What size paper do you use? 8.5x11 seems too small for notebooking.

Thanks for your help, and your inspiring blog!

The Big Book of Everything

Thanks so much for sharing your daughters, Big Book of Everything. Do you have anymore updates? Your friend Kay- her daughter is doing TOG unit one, does she have any pictures on-line? As I would dearly love to see them. We have started using TOG from unit one and are using clear files to put our work in. I would love to build up to what your daughter does. My children are younger 9,7,4 and 2. Do you have any other links for The Big Book of Everything? Thanks for your help, blessings- Robyn
