Crocheted Shrugs
Sunday, August 30, 2009
My bestest friend had a baby about 3 weeks before we did. She recently showed me a photo of her little girl in a shrug she'd knitted her (and booties.) Well I can't knit but I can crochet so having thought we needed something for our little one's arms- and seeing her knitted shrug, well... seemed like a great idea!
Here's the first one I made-- from leftover baby yarn I used in a baby'ghan I made while pregnant...
I made this in the 6-12mos.range, however, and it is too big!
It is tucked away for future wear.
This is the 2nd shrug I'd made, in a smaller size and with shell edging.
Made with some unknown yellow yarn I had in my stash.
While it is cute on her, I kind of think it makes her look
like she has corn cob arms! LOL
This is the same shrug crocheted in the same size & different edging, but made with a
light pink chunky acrylic/alpaca blend yarn.
Unfortunately, it, too, is too big! AACK.
Well, guess we'll be set for
future needs. LOL

Baby Crochet
Thursday, July 2, 2009
Now that baby's birth (and gender) has been revealed, I can share a few of the things I've made recently...
Here is a little doll I made for the baby, just to pass the time asI waited for the pregnancy to be over. This was the first arugumi (i know i didn't spell that right) that I completed. It was a free pattern online. I want to make another one, bigger and in a softer (less firm) yarn next time...
and the baby'ghan I made with a big ol' ruffle around it all. it is rather small, but I got tried of making it. this is a good size for her to carry around though (so I tell myself. LOL) It did help pass the time, though, especially when waiting for my chiropractor appointments last month!
And because it's always more fun to look at things that have a baby with them... here's the same blanket, with baby "G"

Ripple Afghan Complete!
Wednesday, January 28, 2009
Well, I finally finished the RIPPLE AFGHAN I started ages & ages ago a while back. I think it was, oh, mid-December when I completed it. (?) I haven't bothered to measure it, but I'm 5'9", and it goes from just underneath my toes up to my chin-- the perfect length for cozying up on the couch or living room chair in the evenings! Here are a couple of photos of the finished project.

Folded in half, hanging off the back of the couch

Fully opened, again hanging off back of couch.
The weight of this afghan makes it bow in the center
at the sides as it hangs. Rest assured
that the width is the same the entire
length of the afghan.
Since then I've crocheted my hubby a cream-colored winter cap, a hat & scarf set for my Seester, a scarf for me, and have begun another afghan. (More on the new afghan another time!)
**Hat tip: Aunt Lori for sending my crochet tote back to me after I'd left it at her house earlier this month!

Crochet Update
Sunday, January 27, 2008
A little while back a good friend online friend of mine inquired about my crocheting... how it was going, etc. Well, I never quite got around to answering her, until now.
If you'll recall, back in June I started a ripple afghan.
I worked on it for oh, maybe 3-4 weeks then summer came (hot) and my wrists started acting up (ouch) so I put it to the side. I didn't really pick it up again until sometime in December, if memory serves. I worked on it at one of my daughter's play rehearsals in December plus a few evenings at home.
When homeschool co-op classes started back up after the holidays I started to take my afghan to work on during my "off" time, instead of the embroidery project or Girl Scout badges sewing I had been working on. That gives me almost 2 hours straight on Mondays to work on it. I haven't worked on it any at home this month but just tonight I pulled it out of the tote bag and sewed in some loose ends from color changes.
Anyway, Susan, here's what it looks like so far...
Click for larger view.
The rows don't look like they're in straight ripples, due to the way it is
laying on the couch, but trust me, they are! That's one thing
I'm quite careful off... lots of counting!LOL
And here is a bit of a close-up shot...
Any blue you may see is actually part of the stuff I put up
underneath the afghan to help spread it out better for photographing.
It sure isn't perfect, but it is relaxing. It isn't difficult either. Truly, the toughest part is just keeping count of the stitches when co-op kiddos are meandering around, coming to ask me questions (though I just love that! There's this one little boy who is just darling and asks me something about WHATEVER project I'm working on each and EVERY week!) and so on.
My goal for this afghan is to have one that goes easily from my toes to my chin, when I'm sitting in the recliner or with my feet kicked up on the ottoman at the couch. Lengthwise it is now just over midway up my torso, so I don't have TOOOO much further to go. I should just crank it out and get done with it. LOL it certainly would have been well past done had I actually kept working on it from the beginning and not taken most all of Summer and Autumn off! Oh well.
Thanks for asking, Susan!

Crochet Project complete
Thursday, July 19, 2007
I finished this last week, but was slow in getting any photos taken. This is a "skinny scarf" for me! It matches my reversible winter coat which is baby blue on one side and chocolate brown on the other.
Here's the whole scarf...
And here is a portion of it in close up...
The main part of the scarf is in the baby blue (3 rows). Then, I did a round around the whole thing in the chocolate, then used both colors to do a shell pattern around the whole thing.
This originally started as the Skinny Scarf in the Happy Hooker book, but after the first 3 rows I adapted it to suit my desire by adding the chocolate round and making the shells larger to accommodate my use of two yarns for them. It called for a foundation chain of like 203... i made mine 287ch long! (Hey, I'm 5'9" tall!!)
I can't wait to wear it this coming winter!

Crocheted Headbands
Sunday, July 1, 2007
I got two headbands completed today...
First one (stretchy full circle) is made from Peaches and Creme 4 ply worsted weight cotton yarn (color 201 "sea mist")

And the second (tie-on yo-yos) is from worsted weight acrylic yarns I just had in my stash. I got the instructions from here.

DD just loves them both. Definitely easy and quick to make each of these. She already wants more in other colors for her collection of "hair things." I have some other headband patterns I want to try out too!

Ripple Afghan
Thursday, June 28, 2007
Well, after getting a number of granny squares completed I decided to make those in to (I think) a cover for my computer chair. I just wasn't happy with the cheap-o yarn of the squares for an afghan but they'll be perfectly fine for the chair cover. I'll post on that project as I get closer to getting completed.
But, that said, I did get some new yarns that also coordinate with our living room furniture and found a nice, easy ripple afghan to work up with the new yarns. Here's the FREE pattern I'm using for it.
Here's what I got done yesterday (day one) ...

Width is for a 55" wide afghan. This is just 5 rows so far (almost completed). But I want it to at least be long enough for my 5'9" tall body so I have a LOOOOONG way to go!LOL it is super simple though with just double crochet, simple increase and decrease.
This is the first time I've worked with color changes, and that wasn't hard either! I did find, after the initial ch 178 that I can officially say that I'm a tight crocheter. I thought I was anyway, just from having been working on other things, but this confirmed it. So much so that after trying to get the first row onto the foundation and struggling with that I decided to rip it all out and start over. I used a size larger hook and really focused on chaining loosely. Boy, even that was barely enough! I used a size smaller hook after that. LOL But I managed to get that first row in and I'm on my way!
Here's a close up of a section.

Colors showing are cream & cranberry (officially called "autumn") with hunter green and maybe a brown to also be added in. Will post again on my progress. |
