Quick update--
Friday, September 5, 2008

Just a quick note to let ya'll know that

1) We're moving (locally) this weekend. To nicer military-issued housing in the area. I go sign the paperwork (thanks, Power of Attorney) in 15 minutes, do the initial walk-through inspection, then the moving begins. DH will pick up a rental truck later this afternoon after he's off work. Hopefully the guys who said they'd help will show up tomorrow and do just that!

2) packing your stuff up on your own (vise a military pack-out my a contracted moving company) is AWFUL! I hate it!

I'll post again once we're moved and the computers are hooked back up.

Wish us luck!

My newest college class--
Wednesday, August 27, 2008

I tend to say I'm a perpetual student.

Having gone to college for a year straight out of high school, then again about 10 years later (to a community college), and now again via online college classes, I seem to keep taking classes with nothing to show for it. Having first started down a path to major in Speech Pathology & Audiology, then years later changing to Education.... nowadays I have no idea what I "want to be when I grow up."

However, given the WONDERFUL course fees for active duty military spouses at Coastline Community College I can't let the opportunity go by. So far, I've taken Biology 100, Mass Communications 100, and now, as of Monday, just started a new class-- Cinema History & Appreciation Hum130.  The fun thing is that my husband has been taking classes, too. He's taken/taking the aforementioned classes with me plus has been taking a second class each term as well.

Anyway, for this Cinema History/App. class I have to "sign" a film contract, noting which movies from each genre I'll be watching and writing reports/reviews of. There were about five movies in each genre to choose from but I picked the following:

  • CLASSICAL--  One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest  (my husband's request)
  • WESTERNS-- Unforgiven (a mutual choice & free "watch instantly" to Netflix members)
  • COMBAT-- Bridge on the River Kwai  (suggested by my mom & free "watch instantly" to Netflix members)
  • MUSICALS-- The King and I (one of my all-time favorites, plus I did this in high school)
  • EPIC-- Return of the Jedi  (my husband's request)
  • COMEDIES-- Blazing Saddles (my husband's request, though this will be a stretch for me as I am SOOOO not a Mel Brooks fan! )
  • GANGSTER-- The Untouchables (a mutual choice)
  • FILM NOIR-- The Postmas Always Rings Twice (1946 version, request of my husband)

So, this is what I'll (we'll) be watching for the next six weeks. Should be interesting for DH especially due to his hectic Chief Selectee Season. LOL

Monday Meanderings- 8/25/08
Monday, August 25, 2008

Monday Meanderings isn't active anymore, but I felt like doing it anyway!

  1. Bible Study/ Devotions ~ Continuing to pray for the specific prayer requests on the TLT list, for my Seester through her current time of unrest and for my DH during his current time of chaos, frustration, and lack of sleep. As always, family and friends are always prayed for. DD and I are also praying for the people of India this week, during our study of the region, culture, religions, and such. My favorite scripture  is still Phil. 4:6.
  2. "Must Do"~ The only MUST DO I can currently think of is to keep a steady flow of checkmarks going on my TO DO list. That list always seems to get longer and longer, no matter how many things actually get done.
  3. Cleaning Focus~ Living & Dining room (ceiling/corners need dusted as do all the nicknacks and wall-hangings.
  4. Train Them Up~ Just getting back into the swing of things after a hodge-podge of activities over the summer. Back to crackin' the books and putting pencil to paper.
  5. Menu Planning~ Still in an on/off mode of cooking dinner right now with DH not home for dinner more often than he is. I do need to take a gander at the deep freeze, however, and see about pulling some meals together from that.

Back to School...
Monday, August 25, 2008

We visited an ol' pal of mine this summer.
His name is Cash.

Cute, ain't he?

Well, after an incredibly busy summer we're finally back to school. Original intentions were to have continued with lessons throughout the summer between the four various summer camps kiddo attended, but reality checked in, life happened and those intentions went by the wayside.

While I'll *TRY* to eventually get our summer blogged, as with scrapbooking, it is best to start from the present day and work yourself backwards in time. So here we are... our first day BACK TO SCHOOL.

This video is dedicated to my SEESTER.
The cheesiest part is Michelle Pfieffer's face when
she breaks into the dance.
hahaha
Just a great song from a second-rate, though cult-classic movie.

Since somehow having managed nearly switching to my husband's sleep schedule, I got up after him, about 4:45am. I still haven't gotten used to these early hours though so nothing productive happened until I made oatmeal at 7:30. I woke the kiddo at 8am, school started at 9am.

Math, grammar, spelling, natural history, Tapestry of Grace (history, Bible, geography today) and art happened today. Lunchtime even had us watching a Jeff Corwin video from United Streaming on India that was pretty interesting.

Having already done the dishes (emptying dishwasher, reloading and doing any necessary hand-washing) Kiddo is outside right now playing with the neighbor kids. I don't know if DH will be home for dinner tonight (Pork loin, broccoli/rice dish, fresh black plums) but I've got the pork marinating right now. He's been busy all this month (and a few more weeks to go) earning the right to wear this lovely item.

So, there ya have it. A glimpse into what's been going around here. I know some of you have been asking "what about your trip?"  and various other questions of inquiry. But, as you may have noticed, I've cut way back on blogging this year, for one, and for two-- I've just been busy! Like I said, however, I'll try to post more as I'm able.

Wordless Wednesday/Shutterbug Spy

**And specifically for the Shutterbug Spy challenge, a bit of detail:

This photo was an impromptu snapshot taken while leaving a little restaurant in Pawnee, Oklahoma, this past week. I just love the worn,
weather-beaten look of it!

It's the Little Things
Tuesday, July 22, 2008

During this week that our daughter is away at Girl Scout camp I'm working on getting more lessons planned out and entered into HST+. On a little break from this yesterday (okay, I got sidetracked) I put together a new table top supplies organizer for downstairs.

Obviously this is nothing fancy. In fact, it isn't even NEW-new. I merely took a piece of a rotating storage unit (scrapbooking storage stuff from Target)  and repurposed it for homeschooling.

At the "bottom" front (6 o'clock position), there is a slew of "clicky pencils" (aka mechanical pencils) that we like as they never go dull, a few regular pencils, and some pens in the plastic cup. To the left of that are erasable colored pencils that we use for mapwork. To the right of the front are some dry erase markers (there is a small dry erase board just to the right of the organizer, out of the photo.)

At the right (3 o'clock position) is a set of Spanish flashcards (which I've had forever and never remember to use them. Thinking if I have them out and in sight, maybe they'll get used.) One deck of 6th grade Brain Quest cards (I got from a used curric. sale, which is why I only have the one deck), a FlashMagic game thingy (for continued drilling of multiplication and division facts... again, this rarely gets used anymore, but thought it might be fun to take out from time to time), and right next to that, you can barely see the tippy top of some triangle multiplication/division flashcards (you guessed right, another thing that rarely gets used. Thinking it will be nice to use these, too, for a bit as we ramp back up from our minimal schooling through the summer.)

At the top (12 o'clock position) is a set of colored pencils for various illustrations that might be needed in her science/history notebooking. Behind those, out of sight in the photograph, are two sets of oil pastels. We have big case of colored pencils that kiddo usually uses for everything, but since I already had this small box of colored pencils on hand (since forever ago!) I figured I might as well pull them out and put them to use. At least this way she won't have to track down where she last used the colored pencils when it is time to do something for school lessons.

And in the final section (9 o'clock position) is a pad of ruled post-it notes, Elmer's Glue (with a "tappy top" from her preschool days, but I just LOVE it's dispensing capabilities!), some Aleene's Tacky Glue (our tried and true go-to friend), some scotch tape, glue sticks, and a tiny dry-erase eraser (the latter items, out of sight in this photo.)

Only thing I need to add (to the 12 o'clock section) is a ruler and two pairs of scissors. We've got supplies galore upstairs in the homeschool/scrapbook room but having this little tote downstairs and handy will be great. It's a step up from our brown cooking cocoa empty container we'd used last year. LOL
