Day After Turkey Day
Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Typically people think of this day as

"turkey sandwich day"

or "Black Friday"

and as I mentioned in my "Catch-up post"  the men did go out and do a bit of shopping. But, Mom, myself & the kiddos opted to go off the beaten path. (Toto, IN mostly)

I managed to pick up some 99¢ rolls of wrapping paper, a uber-cute gingerbread boy cookie pan by Wilton,
and lovely tea towel embroidered with "MERRY CHRISTMAS" and a vintage bucket to set in my living room. I also picked up a $4.99 bulletin board for my DD, who's been wanting a big one for ages (only had a tiny one till now.) Tried to find some white Christmas lights for my son's room (his request) but none of the stores we went to that day had any. That's okay. Mom was able to give him some of her lights (she has MORE than plenty) and I even "splurged" for some push pins for him to hang the lights over. LOL

Later that evening my step-dad got their tree out (first fake Christmas tree ever for them, I think, sans their "Charlie Brown" craft-style tree Mom's used a couple of times.) It was prelit and Mom even debated whether to decorate it or not.

But tradition prevailed and of course it was!  I think it was decorated mostly for the chance for her to make up her typical "tree decorating food fest."  LOL (Don't cha just LOVE it, SEESTER???)

The "tree decorating food fest" ALWAYS has smoked sausage, cheese balls, peanut brittle, various crackers and dips, veggies, and miscellaneous candies. ALWAYS. This is one tradition I've managed to keep and bring into my own family. It is one NOT to be missed. Add in some Christmas carols on the CD player, Cable Radio, or what have you... and you're set. (Seester, I truly hope when you put  YOUR decorations up you go to the bother to make up a little "food fest" for yourself! And take pictures!)

Mom's tree.

Thanksgiving 2007
Tuesday, November 27, 2007

After spending 3 years in Hawaii (thus, apart from family) it is nice to be so close to "home." This year we spent (again) Thanksgiving at my mom's house. DH got off of work a touch earlier than we'd planned and thankfully I already had our lunch bags ready to go. (I didn't use my nifty laptop lunch boxes as I wanted it ALL disposable so I wouldn't have to wash and keep track of things once we were at my mom's.)

We were thrilled to see Chicago traffic not too heavy (surprisingly!) Our slowest part was from our house to downtown. Downtown flowed smoothly and since the Dan Ryan section before the Indiana Skyway was completed (as far as we're concerned) there weren't any hiccups and made it MUCH faster than we did last year!

My mom and stepdad were already off work and had things underway for the Thanksgiving meal. We went out to eat at Pizza Hut (and saw my son, in uniform, he was working that evening.) Afterwards we popped by a CVS so I could grab a TOOTHBRUSH (yes I forgot MINE!) and then headed home to finish food prep for the next day.

This Thanksgiving, as with any holiday, heck with almost every "family get together of any kind" Mom set out a big ol' spread of food. I share these photos mainly for my SEESTER who is stationed overseas in Japan and couldn't be with us in body but was with us in spirit.

Turkey is standard.
The ham was by special request from my DD. LOL
Both were tasty!

As usual, too much food to fit on the table.
This is the mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing & rolls.
Mom makes the BEST stuffing!

Here's trying to fit it all on the table. LOL
Includes candied yams, orange-carrot jello, cranberries, veggies, and more.

Ended up having to bring out a cardtable (back top right)
just to put out all the food. Not shown are the pies & other desserts
that were set on the card table AFTER this photo was taken. LOL

Going nutso with the camera phone.
Impromptu shot of me with my son.

Of course, my DH and step-dad about KILLED me with
all the FOOTBALL!! LOL
(Yes, also taken with my camera phone. Yes, I even sent the photo to my Seester!
No, I didn't send her a photo of the Macy's parade on TV, I forgot to snap one.)

It was a lovely meal, great day. Of course, it was even more special since it was our 7th wedding anniversary, too! Very cool. Best of all, we took some family photos (but I can't show them now as I've got other plans for them for family members and don't want to spoil the surprise! Besides, I still have to edit them in Adobe CS2!)
