Nature Walk Friday
Friday, September 14, 2007
Having told DD the night before that if she "didn't piddle around" in the morning we could get up and go for a nature walk in the neighborhood.
Well all was fine and dandy for a while until we got to the CONSTRUCTION ZONE!!! Now you see, our military housing neighborhood has been tearing down the old and building up new homes. LOVELY new homes (of course we're not anywhere close to the top of the "move in to new homes" list.. ugh) and you can never really know where they're building at from day to day.
So instead of continuing down "street a" to the woods we detoured and went by the rec. center. This was okay as there is a playground there and of course DD just HAD to go and climb on the balance beam, rope wall, etc. We didn't stay too long there, however, as it was very crisp this morning and the wind was just blowing. Walking wasn't too bad but just sitting there (as I was, watching her on the playground) really got cold! So off we went.
We meandered through the new homes section and up "street b" towards the woods. All was fine and dandy here, too.... right up till we saw a large white dog running around loose across the street a block away. Now, I'm sure the dog was a nice dog. But, seeing as how we were on a relaxing nature walk, enjoying good conversation and clever observations I really didn't want that distracted by a dog following us around. Soooo.... we detoured to the left and walked up "street c" which I knew curved around further down on "street b" which would be past the dog. This would out great, actually, as the homes on this street are much older therefore the trees are much older and bigger.
We finally made our way back around to "street b" and walked on towards the woods. Imagine my surprise (and yes, even some let down) when I noticed that the construction (fencing, tarps, trucks, supplies) was butted all the way up to the WOODS! The only woods access was to go through someone's yard (which I refused to do) and there was only a TINY patch of woods NOT contained in the consctuction fencing anyway! ARGH!!!
So we didn't get to go to the woods. Didn't get to "see what we could see." Nope, instead we stood at the corner for 2-3 minutes watching a crane hoist up some wooden rafter things onto the top of a house. Then we turned around and walked back. We did find another street to walk down, also in the older homes section, which gave us more trees to check out. There was one tree in particular I tried REALLY REALLY hard to snatch a leaf from (the leaves were HUGE) but I just couldn't reach up high enough.
On our way back we walked by the area that is getting a new neighborhood mini-mart (NEX) built (seems to be nearly done!) We stood and watched the men level off some concrete pads in the gasoline section of the place. That was pretty cool. Saw them using both a long trowel and a short hand trowel.
We ended our walk a bit sooner than I'd have liked but we both had to use the restroom at this point and home was just around the next corner. That's okay, our collection bag was full anyway. We'd walked the neighborhood for about 75 minutes or so.
Afterwards, DD went outside to take her math test. Sitting outside in the crisp morning lasted about 10 minutes. LOL Then she came in and laid on the floor in front of the open patio door. The rest of the day's lessons went smoothly.
Here's what we brought home...
Various leaves, seeds, and a young cone.
(Twigs DD picked up in hopes of constructing some sort of doll from them.)
These will be great for our continued botrany study!
And here she is outside doing math...
***Note the stalk of CORN behind my DD!!!! Yes, it is a sole stalk, growing right in the grass! DD says it is from her planting a corn kernel there (from when she's shucked corn out back before) or we think it was some stray corn kernel from the bird feeder.... but that is further out in the yard, so who knows. Anyway, it is growing, we have no idea how and it CRACKS US UP!!! We know the winter will come before it gets too much taller (it's just above my knee right now, and I'm 5'9") but it's been fun to watch!***
It was a great morning!

Family Fishing
Monday, June 4, 2007
Sunday we took a little family fishing trip to Independence Grove Forest Preserve. We'd spent Saturday running errands and buying new fishing equipment, so Sunday was the day to try it out. We lugged stuff up to a prime spot on a hill, complete with two picnic tables and lots of red-winged blackbirds. DS hobbled off (recently had leg surgery) to scope out some good fishing spots along the shore and DD and DH plodded along the bank to try out their pole. Throughout the day they all changed spots and lures, seeing where and what brought the best fishing.
Me, I opted to not yet get a fishing license (DH has one and the kids aren't yet required to have one) so I spent most of the time up on the hill with our stuff, sitting in a chair, listening to a CM conference MP3 on my Palm T|X while I dabbled a bit in watercolor pencils. (VERY TOUGH for me, I totally need more practice) Here's what I came up with:

My angle of view is waaay off, this makes it look like I was up in a lift somewhere!LOL But, this is sort of what I saw sitting on the hill. A young tree in the foreground, grasses on the shoreline, then the lake (this is just a SMALL portion of it) and more grasses & a tree on the far side. It turned out way too bright freen (guess I got carried away) and doesn't really look anything like watercoloring in this scan, but I promise you it is. I just need to practice watercolor techniques. The grey sky covered it all as shortly after lunch IT RAINED on us and we left!! No one was able to bring a fish all the way in but both DD and DH said they had a couple of "good bites" and now need/want stronger fishing line. Good time had by all, and besides outfitting the family with equipment and license, it was free! |

Visitor with an attitude!
Tuesday, May 15, 2007
This fella has been a regular visitor to our yard since I moved here September 2006. If memory serves, this was the first place I moved that I've ever seen black squirrels! Far away they're your typical "cute squirrels" but boy oh boy... close up, when one is looking at you, they're kind of scary looking! (Trust me on this!)
Common Name: Black Squirrel (variant of the Grey Squirrel)
Latin Name: Sciurus carolinensis
Notebooking ideas: Any of these lovely Nature Pages from Notebookingpages.com image from NBII, coloring page, another coloring page, Enchanted Learning, EDHelper squirrels area

(Photo taken from inside the house, behind patio glass & a door screen, using a Canon Digital Rebel and 75-300mm lens. Original poto, as-is, not adjusted for light or anything-- yes it was rainy today!)
To read about this dark creature you can read an article at Chicago Wilderness Magazine or over at Wikipedia .
This guy (and others like him) has major attitude, something my husband and I joke about often! He'll stare you down, flinch but not flee when you try to scare him off with sudden movement or noise, etc. I have a love/hate relationship with them because while I truly do not mind watching them feed in the grass below the birdfeeders (as the one in the photo above is doing) I've had to take down a brand new pole feeder because it wasn't "squirrel-proof". I've had to have my husband devise covers for my planting containers on the patio as the squirrels were digging into them! As a result I have a container of wildflowers that were slow to start sprouting and a container of vegetables that are now in "wait and see status" since he got them all disorganized and strewn about the container, thus, I no longer have any idea what is what. LOL On a good note, however, the squirrels have stayed out of my little garden! My DH strung up chicken coop wire around it to keep rabbits out. Well, I was just SURE the squirrels would use the chicken coop wire as a fun ladder for the squirrels to enter/exit the garden, but I guess they're not into THAT much adventure! LOL So that is good!

American Robin notebook entries
Friday, May 4, 2007

ABOVE-- My daughter (9.5 at the time) filled out this notebook page from Notebookingpages.com. She narrated about her sighting and I wrote it in for her.
BELOW-- For copywork one day in one of our poetry books she found a poem about robins and copied it to notebook paper. She drew a robin, cut it out, and adhered it to the page.

Wonderful Field Guide...
Sunday, March 18, 2007
THANK YOU to whomever it was that recommended the Reader's Digest North American Wildlife book. And a second thank you to you for sharing the fact that the "updated edition" is really just a reprint of the old one. I was able to buy the 1982 edition very inexpensively and we've used it so much already!
The book, as I said, is READER'S DIGEST NORTH AMERICAN WILDLIFE (1982) (click title)

Click here--> updated edition <-- to see the updated edition. (I'd use this link to view the table of contents as well so you can see how much is truly covered in this book.)

My 1982 edition has 559 pages PLUS an extensive Index listing all species by both scientific names and common names.
Species are pictured with full color, beautiful illustrations (not photographs) that highlight their distinctive characteristics. I'm very, very pleased with this book.
Anyway, I just wanted to make sure ya'll knew about this book! It is a treasure trove! Truly the most exhaustive field guide I've purchased ever. And the notes for identification make it so easy to, well, identify what you're looking at!
Again, I'd try to get the earlier edition (for less money.) But either way, I'd definitely recommend getting this book! |

Nature Journal Ready to Go...
Wednesday, February 28, 2007
Those that have read at least the nature study portion of my blog know how much I adore the books by Clare Walker Leslie. Well, let me tell you about one more product I purchased last year (I know, I should have told you about it sooner!LOL)
She has a 'ready to go' nature journal. Yep, all set up and ready for YOU to use! It is a hardback with 176 pages.

It is called Nature Journal: A Guided Journal for Illustrating and Recording Your Observations of the Natural World (You can view an excerpt from the book by following the link. )
Amazon describes it ... "No one could describe NATURE JOURNAL as a blank book. Clare Walker Leslie has transformed what could have been an ordinary diary into something truly unique. The text and illustrations offer just the right amount of inspiration and guidance to help the journal-keeper begin and succeed at making this book his or her own.
First Clare explains to the budding journal-keeper how to get started and suggests some possible formats to follow. She even includes a few sample pages from her own journal as inspiration.
Then come the journal pages themselves. The left-hand page has ghosted-back lines for those who prefer a sense of structure. The right-hand pages are left blank for sketching or writing. Short, inspirational quotes and exercises to help guide the journaling process are scattered among the pages.
At the back of the journal is Clare's mini-field guide, packed with essential information on how to recognize (and draw!) basic families of birds, insects, and trees, thus sparing the journal-keeper the trouble of lugging multiple field guides into the wild. An elastic band keeps paper from flapping while you're writing, holds specimens, and acts as a bookmark. Drop it in the mud. Get trail mix stuck between the pages. This journal can take it! Printed on recycled, acid-free paper with a lay-flat binding. "
Do I think it is a "must have" for homeschoolers? No. A simple piece of paper and a place to store your drawn pages will suffice. But is it a nicety? Absolutely. If you're looking for something to kickstart your own nature journaling, or want a special gift for a nature lover this is a great idea! |
