HSLDA: 2008 Art Contest Deadline Approaching

There are about three weeks left for you to submit entries to the art Contest, so get those paints and pencils flying! 

The deadline by which Entries must be postmarked for the preliminary round is February 1. Students must submit a piece of artwork with a theme inspired by one Of the following quotes from American authors:

Category 1 (students 7 to 11 years old): "What we have once enjoyedWe can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us."--Helen Keller

Category 2 (students 12 to 15 years old): "Humility, like darkness,Reveals the heavenly lights." --Henry David Thoreau

Jr. Conservation Contest

Students in grades 4-12 are eligible to compete in this year’s Junior Conservation Contests, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and the Pennsylvania Wildlife Federation.

This year’s theme is “Hidden Pennsylvania Wildlife,” and there are separate contests for photographs and artwork. Contestants in the two categories will compete against those in their age group, and the contests are open to all Pennsylvania residents attending public or private schools or those who are home schooled.

In addition to submitting a photo and/or artwork, contestants must include a one-paragraph explanation of their outdoors experience to accompany each entry. Poster entries must be on 11x17-inch poster board, and the exact words of the theme must appear on the poster as part of the artwork, which can be done in any art material, such as watercolor, oil or acrylic paints, crayons or chalk....

Submit photo contest entries to Helen Kleiner, PWF Photo Contest Chair, 2625 Line Lexington Rd., Hatfield 19440. Submit poster entries to the PFSC office at 2426 North Second St., Harrisburg 17110....

All entries must be postmarked by Feb. 17, 2008, and must include the contestants full name, grade and school attended, home mailing address, county, phone number and e-mail address, if available. The entry must also include a signed statement that the poster or photo is the student’s original work, and a brief interpretation of their outdoor experience depicted in the artwork or photo.

Write A Picture Book Writing Competition
for high schoolers

Sylvan Dell Publishing is pleased to announce their first Picture Book Writing Competition for Homeschooled Students. Publishers Lee and Donna German are former homeschooling parents, and they are excited to offer this opportunity and to give back to homeschooled students across the country.

Sylvan Dell Publishing's Picture Book Writing Competition offers homeschooled students working at a high school level a unique opportunity to explore the world of children's literature and try their hand at writing a picture book. The winning author will receive a $200 prize and the manuscript will be seriously considered for publication.

All submissions must be e-mailed to Homeschool Market Liaison Maggie Stuart by May 1, 2007. Her e-mail address is MaggieStuart@SylvanDellPublishing.com. Ms. Stuart will confirm receipt of every submission and answer questions that arise. Manuscripts that arrive by mail will not be considered.

Develop a healthy, delicious recipe, one the whole family can enjoy! Expand on an old recipe; create something never seen (or eaten) before. Let your creative juices flow!

Competition Levels and Eligibility Requirements
Twinkle Star Level: 5-8 years old.
Bright Star Level: 9-12 years old.
Shooting Star Level:13-18 years old.

Awards and Recognition
There will be one winning entry per level. The prizes are as follows:
Twinkle Star Level – Two free video rentals
Bright Star Level – Two free video rentals
Shooting Star Level – Two free video rentals

Winning recipes will be included in the Advantage Star E-newsletter and posted on the Advantage website.

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine StoryTime Writers Contest

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine is now accepting entries for our first ever StoryTime Writers Contest. The two categories are Adult Fiction and Children's Fiction. Judges from The Old Schoolhouse will review each entry and select the 20 finalists. Those finalists will be listed on the TOS website by title, author, and city. From there a panel of judges who are 'experts in the field' will select the first prize winner and two honorable mentions in each category.
Deadline for entries has been extended to December 15, 2006!
$7.00 per entry. You may enter as many submissions as you wish.

Adults
We want stirring fiction that will encourage and inspire the stay at home mom. Story should be no more than 2500 words. Example of what we are looking for are: "The Day I Died" by Jenefer Igarashi and "Escaping the Homeschool Matrix" by Steve Walden. Contest is open to writers age 16 and up.
Children:
Attention kids 15 and younger. We want your fictional stories 1500 words or less. Do you have a tale about a boy lost in the woods? A story about a cow who thinks he is a farmer? Use your imagination and be creative! The sky is the limit. Show us what you've got!

Story Time Writing Contest Rules and Submission Instructions

The Story Time Writing Contest ("Writing Contest") is open to original, unpublished, fictional short stories on the topics of family life and homeschooling. Entries in the Adult Division must contain 2,500 words or less. Entries in the Children's Division must contain 1,500 words or less. All entries must be written in English and may not be published or submitted for publication elsewhere in print or electronic format until after winners are announced. Entries which exceed maximum word counts and entries which otherwise fail to comply with these contest rules or The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, LLC Writing Contest Rules ("Writing Contest Rules") (as published on the Internet at http://www.thehomeschoolmagazine.com/TOS_Extras/Contests.php) are subject to disqualification.

Entries must be received or postmarked by December 15, 2006. All entries must be accompanied by a nonrefundable entry fee of Seven Dollars ($7.00) in United States Dollars, include the entrant's name, age, mailing and e-mail address, telephone number and exact word count and must indicate whether the entry is being submitted for consideration in the Adult Division (ages 16 and over) or the Children's Division (ages 15 and under). All entries must be the original work of the entrant and may not be co-authored or revised by any other person. Entrants in the Adult Division must be 16 years of age or older, and entrants in the Children's Division must be under the age of 16. Entrants under the age of eighteen (18) may enter only with the permission of a parent or guardian. All entrants, and a parent or guardian of all entrants under the age of eighteen (18) must be willing to sign a publication release as a condition of winning.

One grand prize and one honorable mention will be awarded in each division. The grand prize winning short story in each division will be published in an upcoming issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine and on the Internet website located at http://www.thehomeschoolmagazine.com. The author of the first place short story in each division will also receive the special prizes listed above beneath the text "our adult winner will receive" and "our child winner will receive," as appropriate. Authors of short stories receiving honorable mentions will have their names and story titles published in a sidebar in the Spring 2007 issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine which will list the names and titles of the Story Time Writing Contest grand prize winners and recipients of honorable mentions.

Initial judging will be conducted by editors, employees and independent contractors of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, LLC. Finalists will be judged and winners selected by a panel of volunteer judges selected by the publishers of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, LLC. Entries will be judged on the basis of multiple objective and subjective criteria, including without limitation content, theme, spelling, grammar and the presentation or incorporation of positive family values. Judges' decisions are final. Entrants are not entitled to editorial or other critiques or explanations of judging or the status of individual entries. Winners will be identified on this website on or before January 5, 2007. Entrants who have not been contacted by this date may submit or market their stories elsewhere.

Entrants may enter multiple stories, but each entry must be completely original and comply with all contest rules. Entrants must submit a separate entry form and pay a separate fee for each entry. Maximum of one prize or honorable mention per person, regardless of the number of entries submitted. Entries may be submitted electronically or by postal mail. Entry fees must be paid at the time of submission. Entries received without the appropriate entry fees are void and will be disregarded. Electronic entries may be submitted by following the instructions below. Entries submitted by postal mail must be double-spaced, typewritten on one side of 8.5" x 11" white paper and sent to the following address: The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, Story Time Story Contest Entries, P.O. Box 10, White Pine, Tennessee, 37890. Entries will not be returned. The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, LLC will not notify entrants of entry status before winners are announced.
