Bird watching and taking bird pictures

Today we went to the Audubon Gilsland Farm Center to see some birds and to snowshoe.
When we were snowshoeing we did not see any birds but we heard them. Then when we got back from snowshoeing we saw birds going to the bird feeders in the back of the visitor center.

So we sat down in the snow and watched the birds. I got a lot of pictures of the birds. And my sister had her Bird Identiflyer so we identified a few of the birds we saw.

We sat in the snow watching the birds for almost an hour. Our butts were really wet and our feet were falling asleep by the time we decided to leave.

But it was fun to take pictures of the birds. And here are a few pictures I took of the birds today.

Dog sledding is really fun

A few days ago we went dog sledding for the first time at the Musher's Bowl in Bridgton. It was really fun and I loved it!

I got to ride in the back where you guide the dogs with the musher and my sister sat in the front of the sled. The person who was in charge of the dog team told us a lot about dog sledding.

She said that the back dogs (they are called "wheel dogs") have to be the strongest to pull the sled. The middle dogs are "point dogs" and they follow the dogs in front of them. The lead dogs are really important. They have to be smart because they have to listen and follow the commands of the musher.

The other thing I learned about dog sledding is that you need to dress warm because it gets cold when you are riding on a dog sled.

This is me with the musher guiding the dogs. I had run with the sled and jump on it when the dogs started running. You have to be very balanced and get your feet on the runner fast.

This is a picture of the different dog positions and how the sled is made and works.

I hope I get to go dog sledding again soon.

Baxter State Park.

A few days ago we went to Baxter State Park in northern maine for 3 days and had a good time. We went to see the ice caves which are caves that have been there since the glaciers melted at the end of the Ice Age.

It took forever to hike to the caves because the trails were not well marked so you could get easily lost trying to find the caves area. But if you have a GPS  you are not most likely to get lost.

It was good it was not cold enough in the cave to have ice in there. My mom and dad went in to the cave and my mom got some pics of what the ice cave looks like from the inside and outside.

The ice caves were not in Baxter State Park. It was on Nature Conservancy land.

The last day we went to Grassy pond in Baxter State Park. It was a very nice hike and the pond was nice too and we did kind of see Mt. Katahdin. We went at a time when it was raining with lots of fog so we only got to see a little bit a the mountain from Grassy Pond. Then after the hike we went home.

We did not see any moose on this trip which was a bummer because I was really looking forward to that but we might go back in the summer so maybe I'll see some animals then.

Here are some pics when we went to Baxter State Park.

The outside of the big ice cave. There were metal steps to go down in to the cave.

This is inside the ice cave.

My sister saying hi to my mom when my mom was in the cave.

The Golf Course

Today me and my sister and dad went to go play golf. We walked there since it is only about a 5-minute walk from my house to the golf course.

We all had a great time. My dad hit the golf balls more than 100 feet for most of the time.

My sister did not hit her golf balls that far but she was good.

I hit the ball a few times but I mostly took pictures. We all hit about 90 balls altogether.

The great escape - a fiction story

This is a fiction story I wrote for a writing project. I hope you like it.

There once was a cat named Dulce. She was a small cat with black stripes and gray fur and an orange spot on her head and green sharp eyes.

When Dulce and her owner Maria went in the back yard Dulce said, “I wish I did not have to wear a halter and a leash.”

When Maria heard her cat meow she told her that she had to wear the halter or she would get lost.  Dulce said, “I will  never get lost if you just let me go. I will come back soon. ”

Then Dulce saw a chance to slip out of her halter when Maria was not looking. So she did and ran away before Maria saw her.

Dulce went to the neighbors yard to walk across it and smell the grass. She saw that there was a dog not far from where she was so she made a dash for it.

She heard the dog barking close behind when she was slowing down and almost out of breath. The dog close behind her  yelled in pain and Dulce realized he had a  collar on his neck. That made the dog not able to catch her.

Dulce said, “Don't you ever chase me a again bad dog.”

The dog barked angrily but walked back to where he was sitting before he saw Dulce in his yard.

Dulce continued her walk along the street. It was a good walk. She heard dogs barking but she hid quickly every time.

She walked some more until she sniffed a familiar scent. The scent of Maria’s granddad.

Dulce thought it would be fun to go spy on granddad so she did. He was working on his car. Dulce said, “That is the brightest car I have ever seen. It looks like the color of your painted bathroom.”  Dulce knew this because she had been in granddad’s house before with Maria when they took a picture for Christmas.

Dulce thought she should go home after spying because she thought Maria would probably be sad and missing her. So she walked to the end of granddad’s drive way to  walk back home.

It seemed like the walk took forever. She saw so many dogs she thought there  should be a cat town not dog town in their neighborhood. Dogs, she thought, were the nosiest things in the world.  They always ruined her beauty cat naps.

Dulce went back home and snuck up behind Maria and heard that she was crying. Dulce jumped on top of Maria’s head and said, “I am home Maria! I am home Maria!”

Maria screamed when she recognized Dulce because she was so happy. She hugged Dulce and told her, “You are the naughtiest cat in the world but I love you anyway Dulce.”

Dulce purred and said,” I love being with you too Maria. I will never leave you again.”

4-H Pig Raffle

Me and my sister worked in the 4-H kitchen with some of our 4-H friends at the Cumberland Fair. When me and my friend were working in the kitchen our club leader asked if we could work in the pig raffle booth because nobody was there. We said yes and oh my it was very interesting.

There were some odd people who came up to us at that booth, like the guy and his grandson. Me and my friend said to him that we were selling pig raffle tickets. The pig is freezer ready. The pig is alive at the fair and then he goes to the butcher to be freezer ready. So this guy asked his grandson, "Do you want a pig?" And the kid was opened mouthed then said OK. So the guy bought a raffle tickets and asked if the pig would be marinated.  I said no so he went over to the pig and started talking to the pig about how they should marinade her and why doesn't she come marinated. It was odd!

There was someone else who asked how much the raffle tickets cost and I said they were a $1.00 each. My friend said the pig came freezer ready and the person got like a little  freaked out. Then the person and her family went over to the pig and stared talking to it and saying things like, "you poor thing I wish I could keep you so they would not eat you."

It was hard not to laugh. So if you ever want to sell Pig raffle tickets for 4-H, there might be some odd people who talk to you about it. Then there are the regular people and they are OK.

It was OK to work in the raffle booth but I don't think I would want to do it again though.

Cat costumes

Yesterday me and my sister went to Goodwill to look at the costumes for Halloween and my sister saw costumes for dogs and it said it would fit cats too. So my sister begged my mom to get them for our cats.

My sister got a witch one for our cat Dulce and a clown for our other cat Lupus. They also fit our bigger cat Toddy but he is going to be a pumpkin that I brought him a few years ago.
