Clothes Storage?
This week is a Backwards Works for Me Wednesday: I tell you my problems, you send me your brilliant solutions. For all of you with your young brains (See my post on how old is your brain...) can certainly out think a poor old Mama who can't remember the last time she slept through the night.
As fall approaches, I am once again looking at the time when we need to weed through clothes, figure out what fits or not, see what we still need to get, etc. It is so hard to figure all that out, and I hate the mess.
Top that off with the fact that Josiah is hitting his growth spurt and growing faster than a season lasts, and it is a recipe for disaster. Where do I store all these clothes?
We have 3 closets in the whole house, none of which have doors. Up until now, I have just gotten rid of all clothes which will not be worn the next season. But I just feel like I am re-inventing the wheel each time I go through clothes. There HAS to be an easier way. But where do I store extras, and how do I access them easily? We do have a small attic, but it fills up quickly with Christmas and stuff. It's not the most accessible place, but maybe the only option?
How do you sort them? How many bins do you have? Boys, girls? Remember I have girls ages 15, almost 9, 7, 5 (these three just pass clothes down from girl to girl), 20 months, and 2 months. The boys are 14, 11, and 3. I don't save between the 11 and 3 yo boys, nor between the 15 and 9 yo girls.
Ideas? Leave a comment as the server for my e-mail is down and I cannot access it. Thanks!

my only suggestion for storage is to use those big bags you can suck the air out. that way they take out less space. my mother uses those for her MANY blankets that she won't let go. I swear... she has sooo many.

Yes, SPACE BAGS, and if there is a Bed, Bath and Beyond near you, use their flyer and postcard coupons to save money on your space saving. They will keep your clothes clean (as long as they are clean when stored, but woe to you if they are not) and allow you to store as much as possible. Best wishes to your wonderful family! *Ü*

I have one idea that might work for you -do you have some local friends that you can swap clothing back and forth with? I share clothing back and forth with some of my girlfriends who have children older/younger than mine, and it's a great way to not have to store it yourself!
Blessings,
Steph

Clear, plastic bins.
You can get them in any shape and size. If your storage space is limited, try to find ones that will fit under beds.
Have fun! :)

I use the under the bed plastic bins, or the regular bins. I also take clothes to the consignment shop every season. Especially stuff I don't like or clothes given to us that I can not find another home for. I have Goodwill, Consignment and then Storage bins. Three seperate give aways. I only have one season at a time in the closets. We have the 3 boys in one closet, 2 girls in the other. Char

I would suggest under the bed as well- you could even get those bed risers to raise the beds higher so you can store more stuff.
Also, just be creative. Try cheap or free cardboard boxes ( I suggest holding out for the ones with separate lids) and cover them in pretty contact paper. I organized my whole closet with 12 boxes for next to nothing and it looks great.
If it were me, I would have a girls closet and boys closet- have a box with each kid's name on it that is specifically for pass downs. That way they stay sorted by size. Have one big box somewhere for Goodwill/consignment so that you don't have to consolidate from different places.
As far as knowing what to buy- I suggest letting each kid have a "color theme" each season. For instance your 9 year old girl could choose Brown as her "main" color and green and yellow as the secondary colors. If you buy with that in mind, you will likely have less clothes but more combinations. Also less accessories usually because you don't have to have 2 dress shoes, 2 belts, etc.
Not to say you can't have exceptions but it would make it easy to shop and not have as much stuff. Then when you pass it down you can keep the brown "base" items and one of the original colors and let the next one pick a new color to supplement with. And then when it passes down again, you can keep most of the base stuff, get rid of the one original color and let them pick another color... I know that sounds complicated but I actually think it would be really really simple once you got the hang of it.
The less clothes you have, the easier to store and the easier to sort!!

Don't think of swapping clothes w/ me each seaon...just the thought of trying to remember what was yours to return and what was ours is making one of my hairs think of turning grey. = )
No help here...same problem.

i'm not done with babies yet so to store between kids i use space bags... yes, like you have seen on TV. they really do compress the clothes well and make it so that you need less storage space. I also used them to compress clothes and blankets that we took to an orphanage in Ukraine. I was able to get two duffle bags worth of supplies into one duffle bag. They weighed a ton but were (luckily) under the FAA max. It really is cheaper to order them online or by phone than to buy them in the store, but they can be found at Walmart and other stores. That's all I got :) Good luck! Sorting just for my two is a holy nightmare...

I only had to deal with girls clothes but I put them plastic containers with lids( very important so you can store them anywhere). I had a box for each age for summer or winter.I would change clothes out twice a year. So a box would have 2T summer and then be changed to 2T winter. I put the boxes wherever I could attic, under beds, closets, garage, beside the bed with a table cloth. I will admit that changing clothes each season was one of my least favorite jobs. Remember kids do grow up quickly and then you don't have to do this job any more. =) Pam

If you have a garage buy the shelves that hang from the ceiling. You could then store clothes in rubbermaid boxes in the garage.
I don't know your bed situation but you could buy/make the risers to allow more room for bags/bins under beds.
