Hi! Welcome to my blog! My name is Jane (PlainJane) and I am the blessed and happy wife to Jeff and doubly blessed mama of two perfectly wonderful daughters. Please join me as I share our Lifestyle of Learning through Christian homeschooling and homesteading on our little hobby farm with our prairie girls.
Amber (Bookworm) is our dd15/10th grader.
Our perfectionist and over-achiever. She loves reading, playing violin, all things vintage, riding her Paint horse, and being a farm girl.
Anna (Ladybug)
is our dd12/7th grader.
Our "girls just want to have fun" girl. She loves to play and has a great sense of humor, but also enjoys cooking, music, and riding her QH pony.
Schoowise/Healthwise: Well, school started out great this week with putting in a full day Monday, but it all went down hill from there... we have been battling either a cold/virus or a very mild H1N1 for all three of us girls with a low-grade fever, cough, the works. Thankfully, we started doing better yesterday and this morning the girls woke up with NO fevers. Woohoo! I'm doing much better too with some chest congestion (not good with asthma), but else perky as can be. No matter what, I still don't believe in getting the flu shot.
Farmwise: Lost another hen yesterday! That makes our 4th hen disappearance this summer. The naughty things wander down to the woods/river and I'm sure are a tasty meal for a fox or coyotee. That leaves us now with 5 laying hens, 1 rooster, and little old Brownie, our banty that just wants to set on eggs. I suppose we will have to get more chicks again next spring. Meanwhile, with all the rain & snow lately, even if we felt good enough, we can't ride horses - just too slippery.
Funwise: Even though we are mostly homebound, I did manage to order some books...
Thomas Edison (In Their Own Words) (Scholastic) - I'm really into great men of the past right now and read some really great reviews about this book.
World of Inventors: Thomas Edison - Okay so I know 2 books about Thomas Edison is a bit much, but I had a hard time deciding and this one includes a really cool kit to make a "kinetoscope"
World of Inventors: Alexander Graham Bell - And while I was looking at Edison books, I came across this one too. Too fun! In this one we make an intercom.
School is just too fun!
A couple of days ago when the girls were sacked out with fevers, Midnight spent some quality time with Amber - notice him pointing out the cat in the magazine (he did that all on his own).
So sorry y'all haven't been feeling well.
Praying every one will continue to feel better.
Sorry to hear, too, that another hen is lost.
Love the new books you ordered!
Will has already read the new Moody book twice!
It's such a wonderful series!
I just love the pic of how Midnight is pointing at the cat! lol
Enjoy the rest of your week. Praying all are well soon!

Cats are just cool animals. :-)
I really need to get some of those Moody books. Right now we are reading Tangelwoods' Secret by Patricia St. James. Love it! We have 2 others of hers to read next. Do you read the Moody books out loud to the girls or do they read them on their own? I want to put those on my list. Have your girls read any of Elsie Denmore? I wonder if Grace would like them and when to get them started.
Have a great Friday. I thought today was Friday until moments ago. I must be tired. Good night!

Oh boy, a whole lot of coveting is going on here. I will have to get that fifth Moody book to save my sanity, lol! Thanks for the tip (I think). Hmm, those inventor books look intriguing. What grade level are they for?
So sorry to hear you lost ANOTHER hen. Reminds me of a poem a friend wrote for me years ago:
Ten little chicks and Mother Hen
Went for a walk near the fox's den.
"Oh sweet ones, come in for a meal!"
Frightened Mother Hen let out a big squeal!
Then back to their nest they hurried in a group,
And learned to be content in their little chicken coop.
"In everything give thanks..."
The timing was very appropriate for me. :o) But I don't think poetry will help your chickens to stay home...
Love the picture of the kitty "reading." Looks like something our kitten would do. LOL!
I don't blame you for not getting the vaccine. I am a new asthmatic. I got the regular flu shot, and w/in 2 days, thought I was going to die due to a bad reaction to it. I did post some helpful hints to avoid getting the flu, and you can do with common things in your home. I even work in the ER, and am still not getting that vaccine.
I can't remember if it was you who asked what caused me to get asthma. In case it WAS you, the answer is: One day the neighbor started spraying chemicals on his yard. Immediately, my throat started swelling. I got a bad case of bronchitis from it, and the asthma issues started at the same time.
Our 18 yo cat also started having respiratory issues after the "spraying." We had to put him down in August.
I have had someone suggest that possibly the chemicals he sprayed are attacking other organs in my body. I haven't had extensive testing to find out though because we have no insurance.
I think I *might* have figured out another asthma trigger. Whenever I have to register patients who are being tested for H1N1, I have to put on a special type of mask that fits very tightly, wear a gown and gloves. After processing several patients the last couple of days, I notice that I start feeling like I'm going to pass out, and am a little short of breath. All we can figure is that perhaps it is the latex gloves. I made the switch yesterday afternoon to the other type of gloves. Next week, when I start registering more H1N1 patients, we should find out quickly if that is what caused my problem. (There likely won't be too many tests for that today since it's the weekend.)
