Outside my window. . . a bit muggy. And my yard really needs some work.
I am thinking. . . about what to do with my dd and making sure we have special time together.
I am thankful for. . . the good night the little one had. He didn't sleep long- not that he should at 2 months. But after eating he went back to sleep with no problems. He's got a pretty good schedule of his own and I can easily follow it.
From the learning rooms: school has been going quite well. She can do most of her work quite independently. Sometimes too much independence- I do like to help sometimes! And she's like "No, I can figure it out".
We've been sticking to the core (math, reading, spelling, language, handwriting) but I would like to go back to history, science, art, etc soon. We actually do Time 4 Learning on the computer almost everyday and that does give her lots of science and social studies. She loves it.
From the kitchen. . . . oh, I've started a dairy free diet!! HARD to do. I was once a vegetarian for 2 years. Somehow dairy free is harder for me. I am a butter addict!! "Everything is better with butter" has been my cooking motto. :) So today we'll have lamb & cabbage.
I am wearing. . .yoga pants and black top
I am creating. . . went to Hobby Lobby to get my yarn to make a baby blanket yesturday. Found out they are closed on Sunday ' for worship'. How cool is that. Off topic but thought I'd share.
I am going. . .. to tennis and grocery store.
I am praying. . . for my ds to no longer have any pain and his reflux be h
ealed!!!!
I am hearing. . .grunting of baby Diamond.
One of my favorite things. . . definitely watching Diamond sleep!
A few plans for the rest of the week: ABBA mania concert! My dd loves ABBA so I must take her. Besides that we have voice, tennis, AWANA, etc.
Here is a picture thought I am sharing: Sonnet & Diamond!

Nov. 11, 2009 - Thanks to the Vets
Thinking of my dad who served 20 years in the Air Force! It gave us an awesome lifestyle. We got to travel all over the world (lived in England, Phillipines, Turkey and the US) and gave us pride in knowing our dad was serving our country!
Gosh we are a blessed country. People actually choose to serve! May peace come soon!

Nov. 11, 2009 - Education ideas from Arne Duncan
Mr. Arne here has some great education ideas! Twelve hour days? Lets have kids live in school. And put in beds at the school while we are at it. That way kids never have to see thier parents. :)
What happened to church being the center of everyday life? Why isn't anybody advocating that as a good idea to help our society? I can agree with the fact that something needs to be done to our education system, but he's really out there. As both my husband and I are in the education field, we believe that more of that same environment would be detrimental. And like pulling teeth for us, really. :)
So just thought I'd share what our Sec of Education has been cooking up in his little mind.

Oct. 23, 2009 - the new guy
Wow! I've been having too much fun with my new little guy. I can just sit here and look at him for hours. I feel so blessed.
I think about how excited we were to get pregnant. We planned alot before hand. We've been through losing a child before and we couldn't imagine that happening again. I saw a specialist in addition to my ob, got 3D ultrasounds done often (too cool) and tried to follow all of the rules. Still my darling came early. And what timing! A day after my dd's birthday and then the day before my baby shower. And the delivery was crazy, but then again, mine usually are.
It went really slow at first then everything went super fast. No doctors were there, some nurses didn't have on thier gloves, I wasn't even hooked on to any IV. So I'm thinking I could have had a home birth! :)
It has been an adjustment getting used to a baby. My family seemed to freak out a bit with the crying, at first. Sonnet was up with every peep he made, trying to console him. She's been such a great big sister! Hubby just wants to hold him all the time. I know they say a baby can't be held too much, but he'll grow and I don't plan on holding a 19pd baby all day!
My sweetie is 5 weeks old today and its been an awesome time! And, now, I've got some more loving to do on my little one!

Remember the collect call commercial. I always thought it was hilarious and now I get to use it! :)
We had a baby boy!
He was in NICU for a week but we have him now! A month early. Born September 18, 2009! A day after big sister. :)
More info coming!!

Sep. 18, 2009 - She's 8!
Sonnet turned 8! And as mothers do, I'm reminiscing. I find it necessary to look back over old baby pictures at least once a year. I'm sure we do it plenty more, though. :)
So here's my goofy girl at 2 mos, I think. She was a preemie and was too long in NICU. The fact that she got to be so big so fast still amazes me.
Something awesome about Sonnet... she has taught us so much about giving! This is one of her gifts that is simply from God. She observes what others needs are and she goes to make things better. I can remember when she was around 3, she saw a man with a missing leg and she got close to him and prayed for him. Sadly, that was not my reaction when I saw him! Gosh, I could on with how giving excites her, whether it's a hug, washing pots for mommy or catching snails to give to a friend. She just comes up with stuff! I have consistently been humbled by her spirit.
Yup, another year and she's growing up! May God grant me the wisdom to continue guiding her closer to Him and all His wonderful plans for her!

Simple Woman's Daybook Monday, September 14, 2009
Outside my window. . . it's nice, so I opened my windows. A hummingbird flew in!! And of course, my cat brought in a few gecko's for fun.
I am thinking. . . about my dd's birthday party. How to keep it fun and reasonably priced. We've spoiled her with awesome parties (grandma's fault). But I think we'll have to ease up a bit. The only child is no longer the only!
I am thankful for. . . the health of my family. I am just recovering from a cold. A cold while pregnant is pretty much torture. I am thankful no one else got sick and continue to pray no one does. There is so much going around right now, so we need to be extra diligent in boosting our immune systems.
From the learning rooms: We are doing Primary Language Lessons. It's a great little book. Kind of goes with the Charlotte Mason way to teaching. It's pretty gentle and non stressful. However, it has more writing than Sonnet is used to. So I've gotten a few complaints when it is time for dictation. Also she can't spell all of the words that she is supposed to write. So we are doing a bit of imaginative spelling. I could have her rewrite each sentence correctly, but that would be really unpleasant for her. Maybe I'll start her doing the rewrites near the middle of the year after we are more comfortable with all the writing.
From the kitchen. . . . no clue, but I have been reminded to think about dinner. Good. My hubby had to do a bit of the shopping this weekend, so I'm not sure what I have.
I am wearing. . . gray dress.
I am creating. . . we made a picture frame and a heart pillow for Grandparents day. I'm teaching dd how to backstitch.
I am going. . .. to tennis today.
I am praying. . . that the bun in the oven stays in the oven until due date.
I am hearing. . .my dd talk...
One of my favorite things. . . Silly string! Sadly it's still all over my floor from yesturday.
A few plans for the rest of the week: my baby shower! Party time!
Here is a picture thought I am sharing: coming....

Sep. 8, 2009 - reading list
So I have compiled a reading list for us. Was it necessary? I think so. I am pretty selfish with my reading time. If I sit down to read, I want one of my books. She reads to me far more than I read to her. And does anything make your eyes heavier than having someone read to you (or is that just me)?
She reads great, pretty much anything and loves reading. Still she avoids chapter books for the most part, I think because she's just not used to sitting still for very long. So to enhance our free time I will read to her everyday. And hopefully these are books we will both be interested in (though she always likes the books my hubby picks much better-maybe I should've consulted him).
I looked to Charlotte Mason (Ambleside online) , Beautiful feet books for 'inspiration'.
Daily reading:
Trial and Triumph: Stories from Church History by Richard M. Hannula (both love this, bit graphic though)
Discovery of New Worlds by Synge (so far, not that interesting to her)
Books I read to her:
A time of wonder-McCloskey
Sarah Noble-
The run away bunny-brown
Ms. Rumphius-
Brave Irene-steig
The clown of God-Depaola
Owl moon- Yolen (read)
Obadiah the bold- Turkle
When I was young in the mountain-Rylant
Joan of Arc
Books I would like her to read:
Mr.Poppers Penguins-atwater
Along came a dog by Meindert Dejong
Little house on the prarie books (1-read)
Holling C Holling books
Arthur Scott Bailey books
Ms. Piggle Wiggle
The Littles - Peterson
This is my accountablity list, so I can see which ones we have actually read in a years time. Any suggestions for good books? She likes adventure, mystery, animal stories and loves funny stories.
Thanks!

Sep. 7, 2009 - the garden
Admittedly, this summer I haven't done much of anything in the garden. But I just went out to do some weeding and I found this. It was hiding under a pile of slightly neglected canteloupe vines. I've been watering and fertilized with hummus earlier this summer. So it's nice to see some fruit be produced!
Happy Labour Day!

Simple Woman's Daybook Monday, August 31, 2009
Outside my window. . . cloudy and hot.
I am thinking. . . about the things I have to do. I am grateful for the full life I lead and the people in my life. However, when I write down my daily plans, it keeps looking like a lot to do in one day. And I'm feeling more and more tired. This summer, I had more quiet time and time to spend with the Lord. I just don't want anything to interfere with that.
I am thankful for. . . the guidance of the Lord.
From the learning rooms: DD still doing well with what we are doing. We have been done by 1 usually.
From the kitchen. . . . sweet and sour chicken.
I am wearing. . . gray pant and green shirt.
I am creating. . . pressed flower bookmarks w/ dd.
I am going. . .. to buy an mp3 player with video this weekend. I'm excited about it. I want videos for You Tube downloads (may use the ukelele lessons on there, hehe) and the like.
I am reading. . . Night by Elie Wiesel. Just sad. It's a true story about a youth who survived several concentration camps. The events are stated matter of factly and not very sentimental, but its terribly moving. Whenever I read about such tragedies, I always think about when the Iranian president said that the holocaust didn't really happen. Talk about rubbing salt in very deep wounds.
Also reading The Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. My friend has been having some problems with her baby sleeping, so I suddenly got worried about that and decided to read up on some baby information.
I am praying. . . for my family in California.
I am hearing. . .Bach's Brandenburg Concerto #2 ( Our composer is Bach this month. Little tidbit: he had 20 kids.)
One of my favorite things. . . roses.
A few plans for the rest of the week: Tennis, voice, appointment, play date, shopping, library...guess I won't share my whole list of to-dos :)
Here is a picture thought I am sharing: I love having visitors! Here's a recent one...
That's all folks! Thanks...

Aug. 28, 2009 - Our School: the where and what of 2009-2010
This is our curriculum for the 2009-2010. I really stressed out about what would work for us this year for second grade. I wanted to get a bit more structured, but also give her more independence ( hey, a baby is on the way!).
Spelling-Rod and Staff 2
Language arts-Primary Language Lessons
Math- Developmental Math 5-7 along with Rightstart games
Reading-McGuffey 2
Handwriting- A Reason for Writing and HWT for cursive (mid yr)
History- Story of the world 1 & 2 ( I record ahead of time and she listens, then we do the activites at random)
Art- Artisitic pursuits (random)
Included in our school day is Bible and worship, various activities, and Time for Learning (compass odyssey) 2xs a week. We do a 4 day school week. So she can kindof choose what she wants to do on Friday.
NOW for the the where we learn:
This is our 'learning environment'. We need alot of shelves because we realized we have an issue with books. We collect them and refuse to part with any of them. Here's to making the most of our space...
On this shelf we put the daily Extra curriculum and activity books.
assignments and various manipulatives. A desk & bookshelf.

Mostly books on this shelf. Entertainment area with handicrafts, play-do,
games, etc.
The other skinny shelf has the easy readers and leveled books up to easy chapter books.
We keep a tv in here for strictly educational purposes! Haha. This is the 'playroom' too. Had to cover with a curtain to prevent the distracting presence a tv can have.
Now this is where we actually do most of our school work.;) Yup in the kitchen. I never tried to do school work in the kitchen until this summer. It's been great! I get some house work done and she likes that I'm not staring at her the whole time she's doing an assignment.

We usually go into the school room for our activities since most of the supplies are in there. So if we have art or some craft in the workbox we move on into the school room.
Gosh, I think that's the extended tour. :) Have a great year...

Aug. 26, 2009 - workboxes
I was surfing the net and ran into info on workboxes. My first thought was " hey, I've used these before". I'd worked with special needs kids for quite a while and what I'd always called work baskets has evolved to a wonderful system called workboxes. While working with the kids I picked up alot of the ideas used to educate them and used them on my dd. So we had baskets of activities when she was little.
So I thought it a clever concept to use them for her now.The only thing I had to purchase was some extra boxes. I set everything up and figured out how it would work best for us.
I found a chart that would list what would go into each box. I laminated the smileys, used magnetic tape to attach. I chose the magnetic tape because I already had some and wanted to use a magnetic board.
I put her core subjects (math, LA, reading, penmanship, spelling) in the plastic containers. Then set out to add other activities. I've been putting art, history, music activities, science/nature study, memorization work, etc in her boxes. Stuff we had to do, but now more organized and accesible. I also add something fun, like a game we play together from math or language. It is working great because I have all these activity books, center books, file folders that I've been collecting and now I seem to actually do the activities in there. And she loves it! I'll be sharing some of those.
Our routine is:
1. she picks out 2 boxes (numbers 1-5, her core)
2. puts the smileys on the board when she's done, then we have snack.
3. she brings 3 more, then it's lunch time
4. We do the other boxes throughout the day. I'm pretty relaxed about it as long as the ones that involve me are done by 1pm. I refill the boxes at night for the next day. It's easy because I've already planned out the week.
It's been working really great. Maybe because she can visibly see what's coming and what's been done. She likes some independance and this encourages it. And also she knows there will be some fun activity we actually get to do now that Mommy is more organized. :)
So cheers to the lady that brought workboxes to the homeschool arena!
Disclaimer: I did not read the book on workboxes, yet. There seems to be lots more to the system than what I'm doing-but why complicate a good thing... :)

Aug. 21, 2009 - painting dressers
First, let me state that I am a bit challenged domestically. Not because I don't have the interest. I've always admired people who could sew, garden, knit- all that stuff. I just didn't grow up exposed to that. But the more I'm at home, I find I get pleasure in creating or improving something or working with my hands. I also think about how much money I would save if I had skills to actually make a few things myself!
But I am an defintely an amateur homemaker. I am sharing the attempts of my daughter and I to become more 'domestic' and learn to serve our family.
I have learned to be more thrifty. How fun to go to used stores and see what I can do with some miscellaneous piece and how I can make it work in my home.
Here is a secretaire we found from an antique store. It is so cool because it has a lot of space inside and I love that the panel pulls out and can be used as a writing desk. I use it as my dd's night stand. She can just sit on her bed and write away. So I consider it a space saver too. I had this in my garage for a while, not knowing what to do with it. We just took it out and gave it a nice coat of paint and its been working well!
Here's an old dresser that we livened up with some color. Still looking for some different knobs, though.
Those are my most recent fun & easy projects. Thanks for looking.

Aug. 17, 2009 - Simple Woman's Daybook Monday, August 17, 2009

Outside my window. . . it's been a nice sunny day.
I am thinking. . . about church membership. We recently started attending a new church. I thought it would be a rocky transition, but my family has continued to have our own worship time together and I just realize how grounded spiritually that keeps me. More than any church ever did (although I love my old church). Anyways, the church I'm attending requires membership to be a part of quite a few activities. This totally makes sense. But I guess my big issue is how can I become a church member when I am already 'the church'. I am a part of the body of Christ!
I am thankful for. . .the relationship my sister and I have. We have our differences-believe me! But we alway talk it out and never doubt eachothers good intentions. Our kids are best friends and we don't bring them into any disagreements we have with eachother. Even when it involves them! She was not supportive of my homeschooling but she didn't say anything around Sonnet and I have always appreciated that.
From the learning rooms: We've started our 2nd grade! We are easing into it. It has gone great so far! More on that...
We are also trying to decide my dd's activities for the school year. She has been in choir. Its a homeschool choir. It's been mostly great. However, I 'm not sure we're getting out of it what we had hoped. Certainly lacking any social benefits but she loves to sing praises. Takes it quite seriously too. We've decided to put her in voice lessons since we have a relative that teaches them. I still wanted her to have some sort of choir but we'd either have to pay or she'd join a church choir. "Thinking" above explains the issue with why the church choir isn't much of an option. So not sure what to do about choir.
From the kitchen. . . meatballs &sauce with tortellini, salad, bread.
I am wearing. . . beige pants, gray shirt
I am creating. . . painting a dresser for kids room. The color is a little darker than what I intended but I think it's coming along.
I am going. . . to eat some apple pie and read.
I am reading. . . one I'm reading now is For women only by Shaunti Feldman. I find eye opening in some things. Of course my hubby tells me, anything I need to know about men I can just ask him. :) Still it reminds me of some things. Some chapters include: "Why your respect means more to him than your affection" or "Why our appearance matters". Apparently men feel unvalued when we don't take care of ourselves. How many of us would be mad if our husbands said that to us!
I am praying. . . for the ability and willingness to serve as the Lord desires.
I am hearing. . . Land Before Time- we got it for the weekend but didn't have time to watch it. So here's a Monday night treat.
Around the house. . . Finished painting a bedroom! Sure half of what was on our brushes ended up on the carpet, but the walls look great.
One of my favorite things. . . watching my family sleep peacefully.
A few plans for the rest of the week: . doctor appointment...that's all I can remember (since they just called with a reminder).
Here is a picture thought I am sharing:

Aug. 14, 2009 - praise junkie
My dd excitedly got my attention today and said she wanted to show me something. So I went to look, she had put together a puzzle, quite an easy one she'd done before. My first reaction was to say "nice" and go back to cleaning. But I thought for a moment. I thought about whether or not I was impressed with what she had done, if it warranted a compliment. I mean, shouldn't she have been happy with just doing the puzzle, did I really need to see it?
I decided I was not genuinely impressed and offered no compliment. I've thought about this all day--is my daughter a praise junkie?? I realized my hubby and I say "good job" all the time and forget to say what was 'good' about what she did. We want to encourage her to keep doing things, but our method is not working. She used to paint really cool abstract pictures and I would be genuinely thrilled with them. At some point I stopped displaying everything. Guess what- she stopped painting. Was she painting for approval or because it was enjoyable?
I don't want her dependent on my approval and finding no joy in what she has accomplished. She is such a capable, bright girl in her own right. Do I just look at her and walk away when she shows me something that she didn't put much effort in? How do I get her to keep trying new things and motivate her? And how can I guide her to glorify God in all that she does...

Aug. 12, 2009 - Words
Wind Song
Long ago I learned how to sleep,
In an old apple orchard where the wind swept by counting
its money and throwing it away,
In a wind-gaunt orchard where the limbs forked out and listened
or never listened at all,
In a passel of trees where the branches trapped the wind into
whistling, "Who, who are you?"
I slept with my head in an elbow on a summer afternoon
and there I took a sleep lesson.
There I went away saying: I know why they sleep, I know
how the trap the tricky winds.
Long ago I learned how to listen to the singing wind and how to forget and
how to hear the deep whine,
Slapping and lapsing under the day blue and the night stars:
Who, who are you?
Who can ever forget
listening to the wind go by
counting its money
and throwing it away?

Aug. 10, 2009 - Simple Woman's Daybook Monday, August 10, 2009

Outside my window. . . Its cloudy and it rained today! Rain is good.
I am thinking. . . about our adventure at the waterpark today. Super fun. My kid, niece (& hubby) were having a blast. Seeing them smiling totally made me smile. I almost forgot how tired and uncomfortable I was. Almost... :)
I am thankful for. . . a healthy pregnancy! I have experienced loss and one never views the gifts of the Lord the same after that. But He has answered our prayers in this area and I am just full of joy!
From the learning rooms: I have made a SCHEDULE (oooh) . And I have her 1st few weeks of school planned out. It's so nice to get organized and plan.
From the kitchen. . . we ate out today. It was absolutely necessary. :)
I am wearing. . . Yellow shirt, blue pants. Hair in two plaits.
I am creating. . . in the garden. It takes a very discerning eye and skilled hand to know just how to pull those weeds out.
I am going. . . to clean up although I feel like I shouldn't be cleaning up again.
I am reading. . . Showdown by Ted Dekker. I haven't finished it, but one part of the book is interesting. Some intellectuals take a group of babies, raise them in a totally sheltered environment, giving them the best of instruction in all things Biblical and academic. All this in an experiement to see which way the children end up going, what choices they make & I guess how our evil nature affects us.
While we clearly can't shelter our children in such a way (though sometimes I know I want to), we do attempt to keep them close and train them until they are ready for exposure to 'certain' things. We, all along, are praying that they choose to follow the path the Lord has planned for them. I saw a parallel to parenting in that no matter how perfect our efforts, we have to have serenity and just give them up to the Lord.
Also reading Teaching Your Child how to Pray.
I am praying. . . for my sister.
I am hearing. . . My neighbor's visitors in his back yard. Learned that in his culture/religion, when a family member passes away, they mourn for a week and recieve visitors for a week.
Around the house. . . we are figuring out how to put in a new kitchen faucet. Should be interesting.
One of my favorite things. . . angel food cake.
A few plans for the rest of the week: Set up workboxes in the school room, help hubby at his job, grocery shopping, the usual.
Here is a picture thought I am sharing:
I love this picture! My mind runs rampant as I imagine her and her kids life. It motivates me as a homeschooler and parent.
Thanks for reading!!

Aug. 6, 2009 - Who's the boss?
I spoke with my friend on the phone and was told why she was trying to get her kids out of public school (to private schools). She basically said that teachers, districts, everybody acts like they are smarter than the parents. Duh. In her school (in Georgia) the parents were advised to not keep thier kids home from school when sick. The parents are to send thier sick child to school and let the school nurse decide if the child is sick enough to stay home! Eh?
So that got me interested in parental rights. I ran across some info on the UN Treaty of the Child, a treaty written by the UN about how the world should care for its children. In essence, it makes sense- don't abuse children. But I read on a website by Michael Farris about the possible consequences of such a treaty. It's listed in 20 Things You Need to Know on www.parentalrights.org.
Here are some things that were listed:
I'm sure every Homeschool parent has been keeping tabs on this issue since now a senator is urging it to be ratified. It really doesn't make sense that the UN can dictate what happens in the US on a moral level. Will this actually make it to the senate? Be ratified? And why is it only conservative Republicans that have shown some support for parental rights?

Aug. 3, 2009 - Simple Woman's Daybook Monday, August 3, 2009

For Today Monday, August 3, 2009
Outside my window...it's hot, as usual.
I am thinking... how well the day has gone so far.
I am thankful for...the chance to be a helpmeet! My hubby was working on a project while I was outside. Then I came in and heard him having a few choice words with an object that was not cooperating. So I just sat quietly with him, watched him work, handed him a screwdriver when asked. At one point I stood up and he says "Hey where ya going, you're keeping me calm." It made me happy to hear that!
From the learning rooms...I've been really trying to find the right curriculum for our 2nd grade year. I've hemmed and hawed all summer, but I think I've got some definite plans now. When I actually go buy the books, I'll post them. Never know if I make some last minute changes (gosh I hope not).
We also did a little book learning today. Our daily Bible and prayer, but we also did math workbook, Reason for Writing, McGuffey reader and Rightstart math (yes we still finishing up last years work).
From the kitchen... Sonnet & I made cookies yesturday to take to our Sunday family dinner (at my moms). We had to do a few batches and the kitchen was so hot by the time we finished. So basically all my meals revolve around not using the oven! Chicken adobo tonight.
I am wearing... peach maternity shirt and black skirt.
I am creating... we have been working tirelessly on getting the house ready for baby. So his bed is all ready now with sheets and all. I worked hard trying to make it boyish, but still bearable for me.
I am going... to take a siesta (nap). Pregnant lady's priviledge!
I am reading... The Lower Levels of Prayer. It's language is a little archaic but interesting. Its a look at the basics of praying. Mostly what I'm getting out of it is that making prayer a habit is better than just waiting until you feel like it or are moved to pray. I have indeed found just going there to meet with the Lord, even if I'm sleepy & cranky & quiet, blesses me tremendously.
I am hoping... I am glorifying God as I serve my family.
I am hearing... My dog does this weird squeaking/wheezing thing in her sleep. And it's funny right when I get to this question, she does it.
Around the house... Fixing doors, cleaning out pantry, searching online for 3 wooden chairs, etc
One of my favorite things... hearing Sonnet pray
A few plans for the rest of the week: to finish the school room, buy curriculum, finish painting room, go to water park, make it to tennis, etc.
Here is picture thought I am sharing...
