A Day of Labor

Because we try to subsitute pleasure for pride, we avoid taking pride in our work and focus instead on taking pleasure in our work.

This has been rewarding in at least one aspect:  rather than finding satisfaction in having the job done, we've been trying to discover the pleasure of doing the job, even the most menial of tasks.  Perhaps this is not a revolutionary concept to most readers, but I daresay it has been quite contrary to my nature.

Today, being Monday, is laundry day.  This requires a great deal from me, as this includes pressing all of our clean dress shirts, blouses, skirts, dresses, and trousers.  (It works so much better for our household if we don't discover in the midst of getting ready to go out that 3 things need to be ironed at once.)

So as the day progresses and I'm starting to fatigue, the part of me that doesn't know how to take pleasure in my work starts to raise its voice in protest.  I begin to feel resentment at how slowly my pile of work is diminishing.

"Feel sorry for me!" my attitude cries out, and my attentive husband, bless his heart, starts to worry about keeping me happy and asks how he can help.

However, I just realized something today.  I don't want want pity anymore.  I want to enjoy my work, and I don't want anyone to feel sorry for the fact that I have to work hard.

But admiration would be very nice, indeed.

from Numbers 16:

28 And Moses said: “By this you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them of my own will.

In response to the comment you posted on my blog...

Yes! I almost wrote the same thing when I posted that- that honestly, that is one of the reasons I want to sew. So that I can make dresses and skirts the length I want them to be! :) It's my hope to get busy sewing clothes for my girl this year. And when I do, I plan to come back here to get instructions on that cute prairie skirt you posted about once. I loved it.

But, can I just add that after perusing the pattern books at our fabric store, I found it hard to find modest pattens, even.

Pamela,

Everytime someone mentions "the new dress code" or takes notice of the ties, I know that its your work they see. Thank you for your love and service in this way. I love you.
