The Ten Cannots

Oneida County Courthouse Dome, Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Stained glass by Tiffany.
Now that my kids are wrapping up their course in cursive, I'm out to find great quotes for copywork. Here's one that came across my desk today:
A pamphlet published in 1916 by German immigrant and Presbyterian minister William J. H. Boetcker (1873 - 1962) entitled The Ten Cannots, often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln:
~ You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
~ You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
~ You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
~ You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
~ You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
~ You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
~ You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
~ You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
~ You cannot build character and courage by destroying men's initiative and independence.
~ And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.
from Romans 12:
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; 13 distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.
