Wisdom from the World of Music: Debut
Before I begin, it is now officially December and the Fall Poetry contest is completely lacking eligible entries, so I'll just call the whole thing off. No worries. :)
Now, to begin:
Today I debut a new feature on Poor Boy Hat: Wisdom from the World of Music. Have you ever thought that most modern music is completely pointless and trite? Well these periodical posts will hopefully help you think again. There's a lot to inspire us as Christians and people in the lyrics of contemporary music.
So let's get on with it! Today's entry will be fairly short, just a little taste. But it certainly will not be unimportant.
It's a happy coincidence that my last post was about relationships, because this one will address something critical in relationships of any kind, be they boy/girl, family, friend, whatever.
And that issue is the always difficult, always relevant issue of conflict and forgiveness. What do you do when someone you love and care for deeply has hurt you? Or maybe you have hurt them? Or possibly you just disagree and are having a hard time dealing with it. Well, today's little bit of wisdom will speak to this problem specifically.
On their album Destination: Beautiful, the band Mae has a wonderful song entitled "Embers and Envelopes". It speaks of two people exchanging letters in the midst of a conflict. The chorus declares: "Embers, we're burning bridges down. Oh, envelopes stuffed with feelings found, to write this down as means to reconcile."
Read these lyrics from the second verse and just think about what they're saying:
We write to patch things up
Maybe not to agree, but to proclaim love
Let's look ahead and then
We'll see the One whose glory never ends
And based on that we'll see
There'll be room for change, but gradually
I know to have something like this broken is hard to fix
Get it? In the midst of conflict we can still love and recognize that our love for others should overcome our disagreement. If we lose our love because of an argument, we have lost something irreplaceable, an absolutely tragic loss! And truly, only by looking to God, the One who's glory never ends, will we see where we personally have room to change.
But we're not done. Later in the bridge of the song, the band sings:
If all is said and done and over
If we don't have to, we're not going to
Make the change, it's worth the try
What's broken can be fixed tonight
Are we as dedicated as we should be to making changes in our own lives for the sake of our relationships with others? We should be. I should be. Sometimes it certainly helps to be reminded.
Well, I'm done. I hope those words have moved you as much as they've moved me. If you get a chance, definitely listen to this song. It's absolutely beautiful |

I like Mae. I don't think I've heard that song though.
Thanks for the comment on my blog.
Susanna is so cute. I've posted videos since the last time you were on my blog.
Ok, g2run.
TTYL, Dude.
P.S. Even though we may "debate" (over FaceBook, HSB, and such) I totally recognize what you are saying. I get a little "excited" at times but just know, I don't get "mad" and you will always be my friend.
"Iron sharpens iron".
