It Happens Again
Ironically, right when I'm saying I don't have anything to right about, a prime opportunity falls into my lap.
You may or may not have noticed, but it seems like way too many Christian celebrities and authorities are coming out with their secret sin problems. Some are repentant, some are not.
Well, here's the latest. One of the classic Christian artists of the past two decades or so, Ray Boltz, has announced that he's been gay all this time. And now he's finally embracing it.
My reaction when I learned this and read the article was complete sadness, for so many reasons. And now I'm just going to write them down and get them out.
First, there's the obvious sadness that comes from finding out that he has been struggling with this for so long, and has lost the fight. Sin is depressing, but never more so than when one just decides to accept it all.
But there's another issue that bothers me equally as much. In one sentence, I don't think the Christian church is at all prepared to deal with this problem. We haven't tightened our belts and looked the homosexual issue hard in the face. We've just denounced and then ran, hoping we won't have to personally deal with it.
So, we have people like Ray Boltz, and Ted Haggard, who try to keep everything inside. And it always, always destroys them eventually.
Basically, I don't think these people ever had much of a chance to come out and get help from loving believers who actually know what they're addressing. If you read what Boltz says, it looks like he's spent his whole life hiding it, not facing it with anybody.
And honestly, how many of us would have any clue what to do if one of our friends came to us for help on this issue? Judging by my interaction with fellow Christians, most of us aren't even remotely ready. But we should be.
If we have the Spirit of Christ himself we should be able to boldly face these problems and boldly love those who struggle with them. The power of the love of Christ still applies.
Are you scared of homosexuality? I have been, I probably still am. I shouldn't be. And I shouldn't succumb to anger when news like this comes out. Ray Boltz is a victim of Satan's lies and we should all feel incredibly sorry for him. If you want to be mad, be mad at the Devil. We fight not against flesh and blood.
This will keep happening, and those who struggle will keep killing themselves over it with no hope of help, until the Church finally wakes up and decides to unashamedly reach out in love and start changing lives. Hopefully, that will happen sooner rather than later. |
