We're on our 6th year of homeschooling.  While I am thrilled by seeing my children learning and developing through their studies, I am also very happy about one of the side effects of homeschooling--the improvement of my own education.

I went to good public schools and a good university, and yet I am finding gaping holes in my own education.  I believe I made it through high school with no history classes, aside from an American History  correspondence course I took to free up an hour for a high school choir.  I took 2 3-hour classes in history in college: History of Christianity and Christianity in America (philosophy major).  Now, in teaching history to my children, I am finding that I am amazingly ignorant of history. And ignorance is NOT bliss!

Sean and I joke about the "millions" of reasons homeschooling is great, picking random numbers just to be ridiculous.  So, with respect to the above, Reason 324, 557 to homeschool: Mama's gettin' her education, too!

We are in our 7th year of homeschooling and I enjoy learning along with them the truths of history. I attended a public school and attended college and I agree with you that there are gaping holes in my knowledge (especially accurate) of history. My sons look at me funny when I get so excited about a new tidbit of knowledge I acquired through reading accurate accounts of history and especially the Christian side of our Founding Fathers. Blessings to you as you continue to learn and teach!

I can say the same except I don't even think I had THAT much history! :o

In my last quarter of college, I finally took my history requirement (because I dreaded the thought of taking it). It was Histroy of 19th Century Europe. I LOVED it. I was genuinely BUMMED I hadn't taken more history classes in college....and by then it was too late. So I too, am looking VERY forward to learning *ahem* MUCH more about history. My dear paedo friend (giggle) was a history major. She often refers to something that happened way back (forgetting I am ignorant), often wrapped up with the dreaded "remember?", to which I then stare blankly feeling like the stupidest person in the entire universe. It's good to be humbled isn't it? hee hee
