Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

We're having a pretty traditional menu of roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry dipping sauce, stuffing, gravy, pumpkin pies, and a mississippi mud pie. We're also making fresh bread. Yum!

The goal is to watch the parade, play lots of fun games, be lazy through football, and eat good food.. and.. of course.. to be thankful for ALL of the wonderful blessings given to us by God. We had a local issue with two dangerous people being loose near our home. The sheriff department was determined to find them, and they did.

Not much else to post.. when I have time I plan to give a full review of the curriculum we're using now.

Wednesday Update

Hi everyone!

I added a slide show at the top, but it's a little too close to the title. I've decided to give up on fixing it.  I'm guessing that I'm the only one bothered by it!

Shopping At Aldi's

I finally decided to give Aldi's a try.  It is a distance away (probably 20+ miles) but I can combine it with a few other errands. A few things I noticed..

  • The store is extremely clean and organized
  • It's very quick to get in and out of the store!
  • There is a big difference in prices.

I ended up spending around $136 at Aldis (for 2 carts of food). A few things I could not find, so I zipped into Super BiLo ($30) afterwards. I bought ground chuck/meat, lentils, tomato juice, and beef base (for stew). Everything else I found at Aldis. My meal plan is:

  • Mon-Lentil Sausage Stew w/ homemade Amish bread
  • Tues-Tater Tot Casserole w/ layered salad (Duggar recipes)
  • Wed-Chicken casserole with biscuits & salad
  • Thurs-Spaghetti w/ homemade sauce and homemade french bread
  • Fri-Pizza (Little Caesars deal 2 large pepperoni pizzas for $5/ea)
  • Sat-Beef Stew with biscuits (lots o' veggies in my stew)
  • Sun-Cream Cheese Pasta (egg noodles) with peas and bread

A few of the recipes are Hillbilly Housewife recipes.

I bought enough for the meal plan to be doubled (2 weeks) plus breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. For breakfast we generally do muffins or english muffins with smoothies, eggs (boiled), or oatmeal.  Lunches are soups, sandwiches, pasta dish, or leftovers. Every week we have a large picnic lunch with friends. The girls also love to bake so I try to keep things on hand for them to use.  I bought 4 gallons of milk (1.99/ea), 10 loaves of bread (we are baking some bread now, but this is for "in a pinch"), and so on. I didn't need eggs, but did realize they're more expensive than other stores ($1.09/doz).

We will need to buy fresh items - veggies, fruits, milk - as we run out of them. We have 2 adults and 5 children ~ g,g,b,b,b (ages 11 down to 19 months - and he *eats* lol).

I didn't find the lack of bags to be an issue. I bought most items on the flats and then took along a box and large rubbermaid bin. We took the carts out to the van and packaged things up that way. The breads and misc ended up in the box or bin. The rest was stacked neatly in the flats.

I have found that grocery shopping is my least favorite chore. Taking my daughters with me makes it so much nicer. We visit a few other stores, puttering around, and then see how fast we can finish the grocery shopping. Today we looked through Michaels, checked out fabric at JoAnns and then tackled the food issue.

Btw, I know to some this is incredibly dull.. but for those of us on a budget finding ways around the food monster is always an adventure! hehe.

Our November so far

Hi everyone!

Our November is passing quickly. The pregnancy is also going by *very* fast. We're planning a waterbirth and the whole family is excited. It'll be nice to have the kids be able to meet their new sibling shortly after birth. I'm excited because I won't be at the hospital alone -- Jim is my much needed supporter, I'm not good at recovery without him!   The boy named is Elijah, not sure if girl will be Lucy (Lucette? Luciana?) or Eleanor "Ella".

We also made a change in curriculum for now. We're still using (and enjoying!) Math U See. We're now trying Character Quality Language Arts and Christian Light Education  for Science, Language Arts, Social Studies and Bible. It is a Mennonite (Christian) program and has very good reviews.  I knew I wanted something easily planned for next year. We'll be starting our school year with 6th, 4th, & 2nd graders. Plus a 3yo, 2yo, & baby!

The leaves are changing here in South Carolina and many have fallen. It's still nice to see the red and orange hanging around. We're all enjoying the cooler temperatures.

Our other fun news is we're 'doing church' with other families in a home setting. It's a blessing! The other family we're meeting with is also quiverful and has many of the same values. The Dads (including Jim!) are excited about our study.  Last week we met from 10:30 til almost 4pm! It was great.

I think Saturday is "hair cut day" for the boys. I'll try to send before and after pictures. Joseph is a little disgruntled over the idea, James is tired of hair in his eyes. Noah gets to keep his angel curls for a while longer.
