Books • Mar. 29, 2006

I admit it.  I'm a nerd.  I like that my spices are alphabetical- makes them easier to grab when the baby is crying and the phone is ringing and the oven timer is beeping.  I also like my books arranged alphabetically by author, at least the fiction titles.

My nerdy friend Lisa (she admits it) got me started on taking book organization seriously, and as you know we homeschoolers can amass a lot of books in a short amount of time.

To begin organizing your books, you must know what you have.  You can track your library acquisitions using software like Readerware.  Next, get serious and label or otherwise mark your books using Dewey's system just like the "real" libraries.  This is a fabulous project for a high schooler in your home.  Because my kids were little when I started cataloging our books, I made little stickers for the spine of each book that would identify which shelf they should go on (see- told you I'm a nerd).  But I have my eye on the 13-year-old and will soon hire him to make labels with the proper Dewey decimals.

After getting everything on the shelves and organized, I then bought tab labels for each shelf.  You can get almost anything library-related from Demco.

Wow, first I have church envy of you guys and now I have library envy...lol. Seriously, thanks for sharing all the links. I'm going to save the away for when I'm in a position to do something like this. Right now i still have several boxes in the garage. I guess that's an improvement over our last house when I had half of them in storage. ;-)

Wow, what an awesome library space you have. I, too, am envious! I'm a nerd too (yep, alphabetize my spices too), but I hadn't considered actually using the Dewey decimal system till now. Hmmm...I might do that.

By the way, I have been praying for you. We've lost many babies and I know the fear that sets in upon seeing blood. May the Lord give you peace!.

Yes, we own them. If I have extra money, I buy books and yarn :) I also shop ebay, library sales, thrift stores, and garage sales. Most of our books are used.

After realizing that we needed to replace our bookshelves because they weren't safe, we priced new ones and also got a bid from a guy who does general carpentery. His bid was lower than the cost of ready-made bookshelves. I told him what I wanted them to look like and he produced! We're really happy with them.

I have bookshelf envy, big time! My books have outgrown my available shelf space... this could be a problem...

That's a neat idea. I have tried keeping my kids books organized, but the kids just mix them all back up. I wish I had a place to keep all my books together. We have shelves in all different rooms.

Great shelves. Nice idea too! Our books are spread from one end of the house to the other on shelves. They are sorted by ownership mostly and by subject matter loosely.

Wow. I don't have this problem yet. Libraries all the way! Of course, my son is only 10 months old as of this writing (he'll be 11 months on the 9th!) I'm already getting homeschool fever though. I can't wait until we've amassed that many books!
