Ex Libris • Apr. 6, 2006

Doesn't this look like a cozy place to read?  It is the home library of my nerdy friend Lisa.  Now before you get discouraged and think, "We'll never have a library like that!", realize that this home library was years in the making.

When Lisa and I were first homeschooling (1997ish), her home library consisted of a few bookshelves under the kitchen countertop facing the family room.  It has taken her almost ten years to build her library to what you see today.

Lisa has taken the plunge into Dewey labeling.  Here are her books up close:

The labels say "The Kjeldgaard Family" and have the appropriate Dewey number listed as well.

So what are you waiting for?  An organized home library starts with just a few books.

Thank you for sharing the pics. What a dream home library. Mine is likely half that size. I have mine organized but I havne't hit the dewy level yet. I am cataloging all of my books over at librarything.com which is a great website. i have about 500 books listed so far.

What a great idea to put the family name on the labels as well! I never would have thought of that and would have been scribbling our names in the front cover (if I remembered to) whenever someone wanted to borrow a book.

Thanks for sharing!

What an awesome idea! We are well on our way with the number of books, we just need some nice bookshelves to centrally locate them all. I often struggle with using what we have because I forget what we have on any given subject! I'm inspired!

Blessings,

Angela

We caught the vision after seeing your shelves Kendra. I showed my husband and he loved the idea of your shelving. To suffice for now and get the ball rolling, he new of a huge shelf in storage out in the barn. (old family ranch, you never know what you'll find.) Anyway's, I catagorized and labeled. It is a start. I hope to visit Dewey this summer. Thanks for the idea and push!

I love libraries, and old books, leather chairs and bookshelves and quiet. Quite an inspiring little picture. I think we're getting to the point of needing Dewey too!
Cheers,
Christa

This is inspiring! My hubby and I are both avid bookworms and are actively working towards raising four more. :) I would love to get all of our books organized like this.
