What's on the Clipboard? • Aug. 29, 2006

Dana asked me, "What's on the clipboard you carry around?"  Well, I don't remember as I've been clipboard-free all summer long!

Alas, school is creeping up on our household, and once I start to feel better I will also have to reclaim responsibility for all the household tasks I've pawned off on my (mostly) willing family members.

So, what is on the clipboard?

  1. A copy of our current schedule, safely ensconsed in a sheet protector.
  2. The week's tasks as already thought out by Motivated Moms.  I also jot down other things on these sheets that we need to accomplish.
  3. Each child's list of schoolwork for the year.  These are simple lists that just remind my muddled brain of who is studying what and in what book.
  4. A list of chores that can be used as discipline.  Off the cuff I can look at this list and assign a little extra work to a child who has earned it.  Sample jobs are cleaning the mailbox, cleaning the garage and front doors, and assembling a snack for the preschoolerer for after her nap.
  5. Anything else I add for the day that I want to be constantly reminded to do, such as thank you notes or phone numbers for calls I need to make.

In short, the clipboard is my mobile brain.  I think I've mentioned this before, but thinking by the seat of my pants isn't one of my strong suits.  I am a planner (could ya tell???) and when the kids are all talking at once, the dog is barking, and dinner needs to be made, I. just. can't. think.

I'm a BIG list maker. I love a nice list of things to check off : ) I ADORE Motivated Moms too. I've only been using it for a month, but it has made a huge difference in the "big jobs" and deep down cleanliness of the house. (Just wanted to give M.M. another plug, ha,ha.)

Have a great week!!

Since I have a 12 yo and a 6 yo, I have even gone so far as to assign them some of the more routine weekly items...clean the toliet in the hall bathroom, clean the counter and mirror in the hall bathroom, vacuum and dust their own rooms, change the bathroom hand towels, etc.

Sounds like a great idea. Though I'm afraid I would have a tendency to overload the clipboard just like the failed 'control journal'... but the trying is usually so worth it for me as I really do need a guide and reminder to get through my days if I want to actually accomplish anything at all...

have a good one,

A clipboard with chores to do already on it for timely distribution (lol) is just perfect. I always forget what extra chores I have available to hand out to "child in need" and end up saying "well when I think of a chore you will have to do it then" and of course nine times out of ten my brain never remembers, or I do think of a chore and can't remember which child is supposed to have the consequence. I think I need to buy me a clipboard. Thanks for the idea.

This is the 3rd time this week I have run into MMs, so I've just purchased. Thank you for the thumbs up, Kendra and all. (MM was also touted last week at the Choosing Home blog on our series about Kids and Chores)

Thank you for your ministry!
Warmly,

Thanks for the good ideas... - Aug. 29, 2006

I need things like this to keep me on track through the day. I find that I put these sorts of things(schedules, lists etc) but then forget that they are there. I think perhaps a clipboard with the day's needs on it (which I could pull from my binder) is just the answer I have been looking for!

Also, for you Motivated Moms users, how does Motivated Moms compare to FlyLady or just setting up one's own cleaning routine? For example, I have my house divided into a weekly cleaning schedule and have lists of all the chores that need completed in each room. Is Motivated Moms much different than this? I'm always up for something that will help me streamline and organize, so am curious as to exactly how this system works.:-)

Thanks! (and hope you are feeling better Kendra!)

I meant to say.. I put these types of things in my home management binder... etc. and so on. :-)

I'd better get to bed, this is what happens when I stay up too late, my brain doesn't stay up with me.

Thanks for sharing what's on your clipboard, Kendra. I love my lists, too! Your post reminded me of when I worked in the hospital - we all kept some of our charting, plus patient assignments, report info, etc, on the clipboard we carried around with us. It was referred to by all of us as our "Brains". There was usually some nurse or NA wandering around saying "I've lost my brains, have you seen them?" It took me the first couple weeks of working there to figure out what that meant! Hope you are feeling better tonight, and have restful sleep!

I just purchased MM per your recommendation. And, it's only $4 (down from $7) if you purchase now! And as to how it compares to FlyLady, it looks VERY similar except in a more convenient format (for me) b/c everything is laid out week-at-a-glance. Very user-friendly. And not at all overwhelming -- I have 4 four and under w/ a fifth on the way, and I was able to do everything on the list with PLENTY of time to spare yesterday. Thanks for another great resource!

Great Idea! - Aug. 31, 2006

I honestly had never thought of using a clipboard. I figured that organized people are born with Palm Pilot or something else implanted in their head, and that all of us who aren't naturally organized, just have to shuffle through life with two different socks on muttering, "I know I put that somewhere." Anyway, I was surprised that you used one and delighted. I even went as far as purchasing the Motivated Mom download. (Okay, this is highly unusual. I'm not an impulsive shopper with anything, so I usually ponder things for days, weeks, months, before actually buying them.) For me to buy it the next day was unheard of, but it looked so...do-able! Now I have to wait for my husband to get home so I can print it out. He unplugged the printer from the computer and the cable is somewhere crouching down in the dark recesses behind the computer desk. Not having the 6 ft. long arms that he has (and little desire to move furniture), I figure I'll probably just wait. Impatiently.

I'd love for you to delve into #4 more... - Sep. 7, 2006

I know you've mentioned this before: that you assign work as discipline. On what occasions do you do this? For example, do you dole out those additional chores only if your child is griping about his or her regular chores, or is it a practice for you to do this for any violation? (Does my question make sense? I guess I'm wondering if this is a standard consequence for all sorts of behavioral issues or if it's only a consequence for certain ones?) Also, do all of your children get these types of chores assigned to them or just the older ones?
This is sort of a new concept to me and I like it... I just want to understand it more. If and when you have time (or feel well enough), I'd love to hear it.
