Free Time • Sep. 18, 2006

I have a secret.  We still haven't "officially" begun school.  We're reading aloud, reading alone, working on projects, having lively discussions about history and current events, and doing some bookwork, but it's all very unofficial.  Whatever that means.

Actually, the reason we haven't officially begun has to do with the past ten weeks of morning sickness and my inability to function, which means I still have a few planning odds and ends to tie up.  So we'll get really going around the first of October.  And does it really matter?  We educate at home because we believe in education, not schooling.  Believe me, lots of education occurs around here every day.

But this post is about free time.  I was sitting down this morning making a list of all of the acceptable activities my children can do in their free time, when it occured to me that I ought to share it with you because I'd love more ideas.   If you have a good idea that isn't on the list, would you please post it?

Our list is a compilation of several lists made over the years, but I still think we could be doing other meaningful things with our free time.

·         Ask Pop Pop or Grammy if they have jobs you can do to serve them

·         Practice piano or guitar

·         Practice Medieval Martial Arts

·         Read

·         Swim laps to improve strokes (breast, back, freestyle- 10 laps per stroke)

·         Run 10 laps around the circle, increasing to 20 by a certain date (you choose)

·         Typing program (30 minutes)

·         Write a letter on the following rotation-

                        1. Grandpa Bee

                        2. Adams

                        3. Aunt Cynthia

                        4. Eric, Ian, Hudson, and/or Corrie

                        5. Carson, Dan, and/or Josh

                        6. Elise

                        7. Ethan and Ben

                        8. Toni Kumar

                        9. President Bush, our congressmen, senators, governor

·         Knitting

·         Puzzle (ask Mom the best place to begin this.  Only begin what you’ll work diligently on)

·         Origami

·         Carve wood

·         Nature Notebook

·         Organize a cupboard (ask Mom)

·         Memorize Scripture

·         Draw (we have lots of drawing books)

·         Drawing class video

·         Ballet class video

·         Jump on the tramp

·         Ride bikes

·         Skateboard

·         Roller skate

·         Sidewalk chalk

·         Play a board game

·         Research a subject you’ve wanted to learn more about and begin a notebook page on it

So Kendra, how do you count Calvin and Hobbes for school credit? What category? We could count many hours of ______ for our children love C&H.
Have a wonderful day,
Christine

Calvin and Hobbes - Sep. 18, 2006

You're funny! Naw- C and H is pure fluff. And we've had to take the privilege of reading it away a few times when we saw some suspicious similarities between our boys' behavior and Calvin's. Amazing how they can be so easily transformed by a cheeky cartoon boy...

Loved this one!

Thanks for faithfully commenting on my blog. I so appriciate it!! So, let me get this straight, you threw away your old wedding invitations and nothing bad happened? LOL! I couldn't do it - they're still under the bed.

Still praying for Karen.

We are there yet, - Sep. 18, 2006

but I am hoping to be able to say find a wood project from this or that book and build it. Like a chest, a trellis, a sword, a bird house etc.
Or other building type stuff like make a working fountain.
I am not sure how old your kids have to be for this to work solo (I know my 5 year old isn't ready yet) but this is my dream for the future.

This is great, Kendra! My list looks totally different since my girlies are so little yet. Here are a few of mine:
*play with dollhouse
*dolly time - they can feed her or wheel her about in a stroller
*do a puzzle (jigsaws for Isabelle, chunky wood ones for the rest)
*read books on the couch
*blocks and lincoln logs
*write a "letter" to grandmas - or make a sticker project
*carpet time with a preschool toy
*make "rock dinner" - there's a big tupperware full of various rocks we've painted. They can stick them in plastic bowls or the microwave as long as they don't turn it on.
*for Isabelle I can make some dot letters for her to trace

Other ideas - Sep. 19, 2006

We like to send the kids out into the garden-- at this time of year to pick raspberries or make a bouquet of flowers, but in the spring or summer they can dig or weed. My oldest also likes to write poems and stories, and then illustrate them.

I really like the letter writing rotation or classes on tape.

Love the list. It is always nice to get some other ideas. One I would add is books on tape. We love books on tape.

Real World Math! - Sep. 21, 2006

My boys - all on their own with no suggestions from me - started playing store. They gather items and put prices on them and set up a store. One agrees to be the store owner & cashier and charges them for the items the other 3 want to buy (we use real coins and fake bills). I thought it was a great way to practice having their own business some day! They combine this with setting up a house under the dining room table.
