Homeschooling Preschoolers • Nov. 17, 2006

Did you all see Gena Suarez's editorial in yesterday's The Homeschool Minute?  If not, I think you'll be encouraged.  And if you don't get The Homeschool Minute in your email inbox, then by all means, sign up!

I'm passionate about young children, especially my own. How come various activists are insisting that preschoolers now attend government schools? Preschoolers will have a better chance at “real life” if they can have the “benefit” from “qualified teachers”, they share. Hello? They’re three! Preschool is so easy and fun to do AT HOME with these babies. How come the kids can't be free? This is such a joyful time for them - carefree and full of laughter. If Mom and Dad can teach them to talk, can they not teach them shapes, colors and numbers? (Duh!) They’re sponges at this point - taking their learning directly from life itself. Why on earth would you cage a three year old - yanking him away from life?

Moms and Dads are the most important factors in a little one's stability, security, and yes – even their education. A child’s well-being is rooted in his parents, his family. And the cool part about keeping them at home is that the family gets to stay together. (Remember why you had them?) Crazy concept, huh?

I'm so tired of what the government is trying to pull. It's all money-related. Get both parents out - working and away from the kids. More tax dollars for the state since both parents are earning. Plus they get the kids' little minds from the get-go. Forget it. I’m keeping mine home.

Parents: Don't buy into the so-called “greener grass.” It looks green some days, but it’s a hybrid variety - the kind that withers and browns. It’s so shallow that it doesn’t withstand the test of time. Your kids need you. Your pastures are much more rich and real. Keep them home where they belong.

I absolutely agree - Nov. 17, 2006

The norm here is that 2 year olds start preschool. SICK! My two year old is way ahead of all of her peers because her whole life is learning and exploring. I also feel like the sibling bond between my kids is much stronger because they spend time together learning, playing and helping each other. I wish more parents would wake up to those facts. Thanks for sharing.

Unstructured Play - Nov. 17, 2006

Shared by momco3
There's actually an important medical study coming out in the December volume of Pediatrics (the journal of the AAP) on how children are missing out on unstructured play. I haven't read the article yet, but the conclusion is that we have overprogrammed our kids (not just with video games and TV, but also with all the "activities" in which we enroll young children for their development) and we are harming them by doing so.

I Agree!! - Nov. 21, 2006

Our little ones are too precious to hand over to the state. I love being able to teach my children and mold their lives.

I read an article in a newspaper that sighted studies stating that kids enrolled in preschool did no better than their non preschooled peers once in higher grades. Course, I wish it had stated that public school in general was a bad idea.
