Evenings • Jul. 2, 2007

We have some pretty neat friends.  Because our church is family-integrated, we tend to have dads (moms, too) who are whole-heartedly devoted to the spiritual development of their kids, and most of the dads would consider their kids to be their hobby.  Neat, huh?

Recently we were enjoying a meal with Carl and Jennifer, parents of three young women ages 18, 13, and almost 9.  Carl was telling us about their evenings and how they have dedicated each night to a different activity together, making the most of the time.  As he put it, our families are on a ship and it is the dad’s job to be cruise director, making his ship the most attractive place for his kids to be.  Carl is quite the cruise director- a fun dad who cheers his girls on when they accomplish something and leads them into great adventures.

We, too, began to plan our evenings together.  All too often we found we just sort of fell apart after family worship and dinner clean-up had ended.  So here’s what we have for the summer:

Mondays- Music Night.  Either live performances from any or all of us or listening to classical, jazz, or good retro selections.

Tuesdays- Game Night/Swim Night.  And swimming is never just swimming- cannonball contests, “jump/dive” (the game where the person prepares to jump or dive and once they’ve left the diving board someone on the sidelines yells the command to either jump or dive and the jumper/diver must perform the task from mid air, often resulting in hilarious belly flops), breath-holding contests, etc.

Wednesdays- Letter Writing Night.  We have friends and family in far away places who can always use our encouragement.  This usually becomes quite the drawing/stickers/coloring night as well.

Thursdays- Reading Night.  Everyone grabs a book and heads to the living room to flop down somewhere comfy and read.  More fun than it sounds- You can imagine that often the book of choice is Calvin and Hobbes or The Far Side and so we share a good many laughs, too.

Fridays- Family Movie Night.  Self-explanatory, right?  We don’t always watch movies, but my husband has already blogged on this so I’ll let him tell it.

In addition, we save our exercising most days until the evening.  So a girl or two usually joins me for Slim in Six while the boys have some elaborate running plan.  Much more fun to be a girl around here   And before you ask, yes I will soon blog on exercise for the post-partum mom and why I love Slim in Six.

Cruise Director? - Jul. 1, 2007

Shared by fletch/www.themangotimes.com
Cruise Director...I'd much rather be Isaac the bartender...
Joking aside, you know how much we live for nights and weekends around here...what a great idea from Carl...even tonight...what a great way to end the Lord's Day.
Homemade pizza...then out to the backyard with the mangoboys to hit homeruns into the neighbor's pasture, followed by another made up "dad story" for the mangogirls. Again, their favorite about three princesses and the handsome king (while my sweet little mangogirls sat on the edge of their bed worried the story might include witches, ogres or monsters...).
These are great nights...filled with deep memories for our little ones!

Evening Routine - Jul. 2, 2007

I can't wait to see what you have to say about Slim in 6. I purchased it, but have not used it.
Thanks for the evening ideas. We already have movie night, but really would like to take the focus off of the television.

Thanks,
April

Would you be willing to describe what your church does during the discipling time and how it involves the whole family? Who does the planning and leading?

Thanks,

Melissa

family worship? - Jul. 2, 2007

First, I am SO thrilled to have found your website, what a huge blessing for a homeschooling mom of preschoolers!

Can you describe your family worship time each evening? We're turning off the tv more and more and wondering what to do with our time... BESIDES the constant cleaning! We'd love to implement a family devotional time, but just don't have any great ideas on how to start. We have a 3 year old and 18 month old (and Lord willing more in the future). We do Bible memorization and stories as part of "school" in the morning. Help!

Disciple Makers and Family Worship - Jul. 2, 2007

Shared by PreschoolersandPeace
Melissa asked, "Would you be willing to describe what your church does during the discipling time and how it involves the whole family? Who does the planning and leading?"

The elders plan and lead our corperate Sunday School time, or what we call Disciple Makers. We start off with a fun time of singing, often cheering on a group of kids called to the front, or just the men or women, or whomever the leader calls up to pick on that week ;D Lots of laughter and light-hearted fun.

Then there is a teaching time, led the majority of the time by my husband. He says the difficulty is attempting to teach a topic or concept to the men in their 70's and to the little ones all at the same time, but if you ask anyone at church, he does a pretty great job. Currently they are teaching through the Shorter Catechism (Westminster) because this year at our annual Reformation Celebration we'll be having a Catechism Bee. The kids have been working really hard to memorize for this.

Disciple Makers is what we consider to be our "family time", so the more fellowship and joy, the better. Oh, and tables are provided at the back of the church with crayons and coloring books- moms of the toddler set usually sit back there with the little ones who have just sat through worship and need to have a little more freedom. I've spent a lot of time there :)

As for our personal family worship... when our oldest two were 3 and 1, family worship consisted of my husband praying at the table and reading a chapter of scripture, then having a short little conversation with the 3yo about what was read. We might sing a song together or be reading through a book like the Millers series (see sidebar).

Now we have the freedom to get a little meatier, but we all try to include the 3yo and 6yo. We are currently reading through II Samuel, then my husband is reading Doug Wilson's book My Life for Yours. We've read Cromarty's Family Worship as well as missionary bios like Bruchko. And of course prayer...

What a great idea-- I love those ideas! Especially letter-writing night. Seems those letters to great-grandparents and grandparents and cousins are few and far between! Thanks for sharing! And I love the analogy of dad being cruise director.
Can't wait to talk over this idea with Mark.

Great idea! - Jul. 9, 2007

I love these ideas- and, while I'm commenting, I also love those great reminders your husband left with you.

It's tough to avoid the "super mom syndrome".. and realize that Satan really loves when we get sidetracked from the point.. and get lost in being "perfect".
