Homeschooling Moms Who Have Influenced Me-- Ann Voskamp • Oct. 3, 2007

Posted in Guest Writers
***I will continue to post this interview as the first post until the contest closes on Sunday***

Today begins the first in a series I'm calling Homeschooling Moms Who Have Influenced Me.  I hope you'll glean good things from them, too.  At the end of each interview, post a comment about something you felt was applicable to your own homeschool and you will be entered into a drawing to win something wonderful from each of the women I interview!  How's that for encouragement?

Ann Voskamp is a mom and writer who has given her gifts in the form of books our family has delighted in.  You can read her blog, Holy Experience, and be encouraged to seek Jesus anew each day.

1. Tell us about your family.

~Darryl and I are high school sweethearts; it's always been just us. We laugh
that I am his Rebekah: He was my Dad's hired farmhand for nearly five years
before we were married. Darryl is the youngest of nine in a family whose
spiritual heritage goes back as far as is known. I am the oldest of four, a
first generation Christian, saved at fourteen. Mercy and grace is fresh and
dazzling in my life; I remember life B.C., the time in my life before
Christ.

God has bestowed 13 years of a marriage I could only have dreamed of, 6
exuberant children (Caleb 12, Joshua 10, Hope 8, Levi 6, Malakai 4, and
Shalom 2), and a good, quiet life in the country working His land. It is a
gloriously crazy life where sometimes I feel like it's all whirling a tad
off kilter--but we are all together, three meals a day, and our exquisite
God is in the center, so it is all so very good.

2. How did Holy Experience come about?

~I simply wanted a quiet place to scratch down His story on the pages of our
lives, a listening place to hear what He wondrously speaks into our very
common days, making these days hallowed and holy, because He is here....

3. How do you think moms can grasp the idea of living a spiritual life as
opposed to having a "Bible Time" as part of school?

~This, for me, is at the heart of what kind of life I am praying to live. I
don't want to box up God into a "quiet time," as if that is the only place I
can meet Him. I want Him to flood all of the messiness and craziness and
beauty of every moment of my day. I think everyone wants that. But what does
that look like? What does that really mean? For me, the notion is
encapsulated in the thought of a One-piece life. A one piece fabric. No
fragmenting. No tearing. No seams. My existence yearns to be just that: a
life of one piece, God woven through the laundry, and the cooking, the walk
down the lane, the changing of diapers, the learning gathering times, the
times when I feel engulfed by it all.

“Now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. They said therefore to one
another, ‘Let us not tear it…’ (Jn 19:23).

Too long, the fabric of this life of mine was torn up into secular and
sacred, "Bible time" and "to-do list" time. Yet such a dichotomy is mere
façade, mirage.

"The Bible makes no room for the idea of the secular. In biblical worldview,
there is only the sacred and the profane, and the profane is just the sacred
abused, unkempt, trampled down, trivialized, turned inside out. It is just
the holy treated in an unholy way.” ~ Mark Buchanan

I have profaned the sacred, treated the holy in an unholy way. There are
times, I still do. But I am prayerfully purposing to walk towards all of
life as sacred ground, all of life as hallowed--because God is here,
everywhere.

For me, it is about holistic living. We know that our health is not limited
to just what we eat, or just if we exercise, or just where we live, or only
what medications or vitamins we take, but it is about being a whole
person--all of those elements factor into our being healthy. To live a
spiritually holistic life, one can't simply have "Bible time" and expect to
nourish an intimate relationship with Jesus. It is about keeping company
with Jesus for the other 23 hours of the day, speaking with Him, singing to
Him, praying to Him, calling out to Him, resting in Him--living in Him.

There is no divide between holy and sacred. God wove life to be seamless, a
tunic like Jesus’: one piece. For all is in Him. “In God…we live and move
and have our being” (Acts 17:28). “Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where
can I flee from Thy presence” (Ps. 139:7).

Some may think of this as "Practicing the Presence of God"--but to do
that we have to practice being *aware* of the presence of God. He *is*
already here--we just need to wake up. We do not have to practice *making*
Him present--He walks this moment with us.

His word is not confined only to a quiet time for  “they are not just idle
words for you—they are your LIFE”( Deuteronomy 32:47).

 Life is our liturgy. *All* of Life is our time with God.

4. How do you bring the littlest ones into the spiritual ebb and flow of
your days?

~ For us, we simply bring these little children with us, to Him whom we
love.  We worship Jesus around each meal gathering, closing the meal with
the reading of Scripture, singing hymns, praying together--feasting on
Living Bread.  From the time little ones join the table gathering, they
learn to feast from His table: always God's Word,  a hymn, prayer. We learn
to hunger after Jesus too, to have an appetite for Jesus.

As a family, we memorize chapters of Scripture together, Dad leading us in
review at the close of every meal. Darryl photocopies the 4 new verses we
are learning for the week,and the review sheet, and even gives little
non-readers their own sheet to put in their pockets for "review" throughout
the day--so they feel a part of our seeking to make His Word our life.

Throughout the day, we endeavor to keep company with Jesus: we pray for lost
toys, and sibling squabbles, and for Mama to have grace, and for diligent
hands and focused minds, and for forgiveness for blustery words...and for
Mama to have grace.  We try to remember, and gently remind ourselves aloud
often, that "Christ is the head of this House, the unseen guest at every
meal, the silent listener to every conversation."

I don't pack my time in Scripture into an "away time", but an "in the midst
time," primarily because I want our children to see that we hold unto Jesus
in the midst, that His Word comes with us into the messiness of everyday
life. So little ones color pictures in their own "prayer journals" in the
morning, while the olders and I write in our own prayer journals and read
from His Word.

And come day's end, we tuck little ones in, pray together, bless each child
and offer a Little Pillow. We begin in Him, we live in Him, we end in Him.

We are a broken family, sin-marred.  And yet we are, staggeringly, beloved of the Beloved One. We are learning and seeking to make the wonder of grace and mercy, His unmerited love, seep through
every fibre of our beings, and moment of our days, living out the hope of the Gospel: not that we are perfect, but that His Grace perfectly saves us.

5. What are the most important things new homeschooling moms should know?
 .
~ I've botched much on this homeschooling journey, and He is abundantly
gracious to take my messes and use them for good. Two fundamental things I
wish I knew when I began:

~ Do not try to replicate the institution of school. Light yourself to the
wonder of each day, what *God* would have you discover, to a holistic life
of learning and curiosity, service and love. I am still very much in process
in this regard, but we are determined to infuse our days with the wonder of
God, and the fantastic creativity He's expressed in the world all around us,
to the purposes He made us for. Read living literature, listen to music,
dance, create, make, study art, go for long walks, explore, research,
discover, serve, give, sacrifice. Let God out of the box we make for Him,
and think out of the box. Listen to His Holy Spirit as You homeschool--not
scopes, sequences, or curriculum catalogues.  Don't escape the world when
you homeschool, or live in a homeschooling "ghetto" where all of your
interactions are only with other homeschoolers. Christ called us to be in
the world but not of the world, to be a light of love. Make sure your
homeschooling mission includes answering Christ's Great Commission to go
into all the world, to be His hands and His feet to a hurting, wounded,
seeking world.

Formative books on our journey: ~John Taylor Gatto's "Dumbing Us Down,"
Schaeffer Macaulay's "For the Children's Sake," Andreola's "Charlotte Mason
Companion," Bluedorn's "Teaching the Trivium," this piece... And this absolute must-read article,
which I read again, and again, and so wish I had in the beginning.

~That homeschooling is not a formula for perfection, that homeschooling is
not a panacea for all the sin in this world. Your heart is flawed, broken,
cracked, and your children are born sinners. Homeschooling will not fix
that. Only Jesus and His *grace* can.

And He will use homeschooling as your crucible, to reveal your impurities
and your sinfulness, and the brokeness of your home. Homeschooling will
hurt. It will disappoint. You will cry and wonder if you are insane to try
to educate these children, to disciple these little hearts, while
laundering, cooking, cleaning, managing a household, and still being a wife,
a sister, a daughter, a missionary in your community, a servant to Christ
and in your faith community. And He will smile and say that He walks with
you, has grand and glorious purposes, and He understands radical and crazy!

Homeschooling *is* about going higher up and deeper in, for you will learn
to sacrifically love in ways  you have never loved before. You will know
your own heart in ways you never imagined, the souls of your children in
intimate, very real ways. For you will *be* together, making memories
together, laughing together, crying together, praying together, and asking
forgiveness together. Throughout your day, you will worship God, together.
And you'll learn to die to self together. There will be no fragmented scraps
of learning, home-life, friends, work, God.

You will make a one-piece life--hallowed threads of parenting, love,
education, living, creativity, wonder, sacrifice, and God all woven
together. You'll wear it, and it will fit: Grace, Love, Gratitude.

~~~
With warm love...
Ann
I love Ann! I've been reading her blog since the beginning of my blogging days, and she is such an encouragement to me. Something about her quiet spirit, her conviction for those things that matter... Thanks for sharing her answers to your questions.
I was hoping to buy her advent book this year anyway, so that would be such a fun tool to have!
Thanks for this interview. What wonderful reminders. I was hoping for Ann's advent book as well. We tried the Jesse tree last year and absolutely loved it.
I also love Ann's blog, but what was new for me in this interview, was actually the "must read" article she linked to. I've been talking with my older girls (15, 13, 11) a lot about that exact thing lately; that I want them to not copy my value system, but to develop a strong one of their own. Along with that development comes a lot of mistakes on all our parts, a lot of tears and laughter, a lot of forgiveness, and a lot of being Christ's love. :)
I've had my eye on the "Child's Geography" for a long time now, and would love that if my name is drawn.
Thanks for a wonderful and encouraging interview!
Thank you for that! I really like the idea of not putting God in a box and weaving Him into every aspect of the day. When homeschooling it is so easy to schedule everything in order to get it accomplished--even our time with the Lord. This was a great reminder to include Him in everything we do!
Thank you, Kendra, for highlighting one of my favorite bloggers. We had our last babies together, and since struggling with physical circumstances the past 3 years, her blog always offers a unique perspective (and so often she's posting about my exact struggle--including the loss of her mother in law--my favorite story of hers--when my own sweet, good friend MIL was in the hospital fighting for her life) and brings me back to what and Who is really important.
I also got your email and I"ll be waiting with baited breath--(just kidding, take your time).
have an unusually blessed week-
I have enjoyed reading your blog for some time now. Thank you for all of the helpful advice that you give to us homeschooling mothers with small ones to care for.
I was so excited to see an interview with Ann here today! She has been such a huge influence in my life (and my mother's, she loves to read her blog too.) Ann is like a dear, unseen, friend in our family. :) Just yesterday, my mother and I sat together after church, talking of how blessed we are by Ann's writings.
Thank you, Ann, for using the wonderful gift of writing that the Father has bestowed upon you, to spread His Word, His grace, and His mercies.
Our family is already enjoying A Child's Geography and The Glorious Coming. Explore the Holy Land was next on our list. :)
What a treat to stop here this morning and read an interview with the wonderful Ann! :)
I am encouraged by Ann's words to listen to the Holy Spirit as we homeschool. I think it would be easy for me to get settled into our routine and the flow of our school days and forget the fact that God wants to school *us* in how we school our children. What a wonderful encouragement.
And I am challenged by her words about avoiding the homeschool "ghetto". I'm especially pondering this sentence: "Make sure your homeschooling mission includes answering Christ's Great Commission to go into all the world, to be His hands and His feet to a hurting, wounded, seeking world."
I'll be praying about that one.
Thank you, Kendra-- for inviting Ann to share here.
And Ann? A giant hug to you, my friend. I love you and treasure all that you give. I have been blessed again and again (and again!) by your example as a fellow pilgrim on this journey of faith, and as a wife and homeschooling mama.
Thank you.
Very Encouraging! - Oct. 1, 2007
That spoke to my heart in so many ways. One thing that stuck out (that you don't hear many talking about) is how isolated we can become from the world when we homeschool. We are called to reach the lost! It can become so easy to search out for other homeschoolers who come from Christian families to be influenced by (and there is a place for that), but our focus needs to be on those who do not know Christs love and how we can reach them. Another thing she wrote that was impressed upon my heart a lot was the attitude of prayer within our everyday settings. Praying in the midst of a battle between siblings, etc. It's so easy to put God into this box, but He should be there. :-)
Thanks so much for this!
Could I even begin to describe how this interview spoke to me? Its been a long and its very rare to hear (read) such a passionate display of faith and love for our Father in Heaven.
What will stick with me the most is the clip on her webpage of that sweet little girl reciting the 23rd Psalm. :) I guess I forget what little people are capable of. :) Thanks.
Wow, i love Anns writing too and have been reading it for some time as well. Making God part of all we do is something that really hit home with me. I am so excited you had Ann as your 1st interview. Ever since you posted a link to her blog I have been lapping it up like a thirsty puppy. She is a great encourager and so REAL which can be at times difficult to find in homeschooling circles. I just checked your blog to escape my own homeschool, I needed a break before lunch from all the crazies and my computer is in the same room as the washing machine. I started a load and checked out your blog and Ann's to hide for awhile-it's loud in here so I can't hear them outside(it's safe for a few min.).
This was an excellent reminder not to try to duplicate school, something I struggle with as a former teacher.
Thanks for all your encouragement.
I really needed that interview with Ann today. I often feel so guilty for the lack of "quiet time" I spend. I love to sit and read the Bible and learn and yet even when the quiet times come my heart is not quiet and is so focused on all that must be done. Ann's attitude is very freeing to me. We do endeavor to love God and teach his Word here an little and there a little. I guess the post made me realize that I am not the only one living in organized chaos. Potty training is hallowed ground - hallelujah!
Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins were a big hit around here too. Thanks for all your time.
So much of what Ann said struck a chord with me. I have studied Charlotte Mason, attend a CM support group, etc., but I still am far too stuck on scope and sequence. I've even heard before to have God direct your homeschooling days but I couldn't wrap my brain around what that looks like. I just kept sticking in more "Bible times". Somewhere the fog seems to be lifting, though, after reading this post and I'm excited to see what tomorrow and the days to come hold with this new perspective. Thank you for your thoughts and advice.
Oh wow, to comment on just 1 thing that spoke to me from Ann's interview...wow. The whole interview spoke to me and encouraged me in this endeavor we call motherhood and homeschooling. I especially love the part about every single detail of our lives - even the laundry - having God in them...that we don't have to DO something to know God's presence - He is just here with me now, every minute! That guest at the dinner table, etc, I LOVE that and need to remember it everyday. Thanks for sharing! I'm going to go back and look at the links she posted now! :)
I discovered Ann's blog a couple of months ago and it has been like an "Oswald Chambers Devotional" for this mother of four little ones. Learning to see God and to practice his GRACE in the everyday busyness of young children is the road that I am on currently. Ann's words, as she searches her heart and shares deeply, have been words of comfort and encouragement, even inspiration to me. God is Here, Now.
"God did this so that men and women would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us..."
Thanks Ann!
I've been very blessed by reading this interview today, by the reminder to let Christ permeate our home, to recognize that our faults are amplified when we homeschool, and to trust the Lord to lead us and guide what we learn each day.
Thank you so much for this opportunity and for getting my day started so beautifully.
**post a comment about something you felt was applicable to your own homeschool **
From this article, and from Ann's blog, this is what I glean regularly:
**And He will smile and say that He walks with
you, has grand and glorious purposes, and He understands radical and crazy! **
From her shared prayers in the midst of the crazy moments,
from her unfailing reminders that *He knows* about where I am,
about what is happening in our life,
about the organized chaos that is often unorganized
then *I* know...
that He has placed me here,
in this family,
in this season,
for His glory
and my good...
and it *IS*, Ann, it absolutely *IS*...
Because our family is in the midst of selling our farm, leaving our known life, and moving to Israel into an unknown life (well, unknown to *us*)...we would love a copy of A Child's Geography Volume Two: Explore The Holy Land.
Thanks Ann...your writings are blessing many. And it appears I'm not the only one who knows it! :)
I found your interview very inspiring! My home is split on believing in God and I find it a difficult road to travel. I have tended to put God in that little box because of our home situation. You have inspired me to open our whole home up to him and weave Him throughout our day.
This is such a lovely way to teach geography ~ just cuddle up with your little one and read. Having said that, I was surprised at the depth of information in this book. We coloured the layers of the atmosphere, labeled them with their names and heights and there it was for us to see and absorb
( we're both visual learners! ) I would love to have the Holy Land book.
...taking God out of the box we build for Him in our homeschool Bible studies and quiet times, and waking up to His merciful presence in the midst of all the "messiness" of homeschool life... Yes! Oh how I long for and need to have this seamlessness with God! Ann has such a gift for putting into words what my soul can often only vaguely yearn for.
Having an 11-year-old daughter approaching puberty, with all of the accompanying high emotions that brings, our days together have been rough lately -- far from holy. Ann's blogs have spoken healing wisdom into my head and heart over the past few days.
How Ann has blessed our family - Oct. 2, 2007
Shared by Anonymous
Our family was introduced to Ann's writings for the first time last Christmas when we read through her Jesse Tree devotionals. Both of our daughters gave their hearts to Jesus during that time! I was also so blessed to read her thoughts here on this blog. Her words are very timely, as I am learning that you can't have a separate life apart from your kids. Now we're learning more about not having a separate life apart from God. Ann put to words how we are learning to integrate Him into every aspect of our lives. He is in fact WITH US- all the time. Thank you, Ann, for sharing your wisdom with us.
Love in Christ,
I love Ann's blog, thank you for directing me to her some time ago! I have learned so much from her. This interview is great. It's encouraging to see that some of the things that are on my heart, and I'm trying (by God's grace!) to implement are things that she thinks are important. For example, the fact that our daily, everyday, all-day-long life is our life in the Lord! We don't just spend moments with Him (although sometimes we spend additional, set-aside, focused time in study and prayer), we spend EVERY moment with Him! We want to abide in Him, and have our lives be worship to His name. Many blessings to you both, Kendra and Ann! Thanks for ministering to us all. ~Jodie
to sacrifically love in ways you have never loved before......And you'll learn to die to self together. There will be no fragmented scraps
I enjoyed reading the interview with Mrs. Voskamp. Perhaps I can say the interview rekindled something inside me-to remember (deeply) why I am homeschooling. It awakened me to seek God daily in a different way that I really cannot describe in few words. I have quite a few things I feel stirring inside that I do not know how to verbalize right now.
I have been a part of the Child's geography email loop and like reading those entries. I am desperately hoping to be able to get this book real, real soon, so I can begin teaching it. The chapter downloads seemed so interesting.
Ann's thoughts on not making "quiet time" a fragmented part of life caught me attention. It is so easy to get caught up in the idea of having a seperate "quiet time" each day. An update from the shy farm girl... - Oct. 3, 2007
Shared by Anonymous
Y'all are overwhelmingly kind to the shy farm girl.
A quiet whisper: Someone mentioned that their meals are silly, crazy and with many spills? Yes. That is exactly our house too. (I always sit down with a dishtowel over my shoulder so we don't have to miss a beat, and can just mop it up when it inevitably happens.) We have to settle things down for the Bible reading, encourage focus through the memorizing, sing robustly to keep us all on tune for the hymn. Please, it is wild and crazy in here. Think: not perfect.
But we are consistent, we are seeking to create a place of grace, we purpose (and fail, and purpose again), to keep Jesus at the center. Spills and all.
(If anyone has any tips on how to minimize spills and craziness, this heart is keen to know! My dishtowel here is *wet.* ~warm smile~)
All's grace,
Ann
