The Lord's Day • Oct. 24, 2007

Hi Kendra,

I while ago I checked your blog and found the link to Abondante Living.
Well, the Lord must really be working on me because just this morning I found
myself in Jeremiah reading again of the importance to keep the Sabbath holy.

My question for you is what might someone's small next steps be to make that
return to the Sabbath?  The website Abondante Living is incredible but a bit
overwhelming for me.  I'm a mom of 3 (almost 3, almost 2, and 9 months) and
I seem to imagine Sunday without "work."

Thoughts?  Ideas?

Thanks,
~kia

Hi Kia-

We never understood the importance of keeping the Lord's Day, well, the Lord's Day until almost ten years ago.  We moved slowly toward change in our lives, but the bottom line is that yes, there is still work involved for mom.  Diapers need to be changed, babies need to be nursed, food needs to be prepared, or at least taken out and cleaned up.

When we began, we decided to change our focus for the day.  No laundry run, no tv, no big work projects in the yard.  We'd do easy breakfasts, like bagels and cream cheese, which to this day is our Sunday breakfast because everything else seems to get on clothing before we head out the door.

We prep the days before- one child who can never seem to remember to get his church clothes to me in time to be ironed on Saturday now must make sure they're on the ironing pile by Friday, but the rest have to make sure they're ready by Saturday.  They tend to be in charge of this because it isn't every Sunday that the older kids need their clothes washed.  They can hang Sunday clothes back up for the week.

I prep lunch items that are headed for the church potluck on Saturdays.  We line up shoes, pack water bottles and the diaper bag on Saturdays, too.  We just try to make Sunday the pivotal day of our week, so we like to think of all the other days as leading up to the best day- Sunday!  Sunday is the only day we let our kids have soda, so Sunday is now known as "Soda Sunday".  I tell them it's the sweetest day, so they get to have soda   They love that.

We have even gotten to a place where we don't like to practice commerce on the Lord's Day, so I have to think ahead and make sure our Sunday meals are ready to go.  Mostly, we do easy stuff like baked potato bar for dinner, or sometimes we just have ice cream- it's the sweetest day   My friend Cheryl calls Sunday dinner "Wild Dinner" because it's pretty much every man for himself there- cheese and crackers, leftovers, grilled cheese, popcorn, etc.

You can take small steps like we did and find great joy in honoring the day.  I was hesitant at first, but now I LOVE the day of rest, because that's how God designed us.  Last Sunday I played a four-hour Monopoly game with my 14-year-old, which was more fun for him than me, but all I really did was relax on the couch and laugh with my kiddos.  Very refreshing.

And that work that still exists for Mom?  Those little necessary tasks are acts of mercy.  When I think of it like that, it doesn't seem so much like work.

Blessings,
Kendra

Another thought - Oct. 25, 2007

Mark 2 teaches that the Sabbath was made for man. So, I echo Kendra's thoughts, that embracing the Sabbath brings joy and rest. It was made for us. It should be the best day of the week with the best foods, and the best music, and the best wine, and so on...
This is probably one of the most difficult things in our current American Christian culture, because the church has neglected to teach on this topic and many others have pegged it as pure legalism.

The day that makes us hungry for heaven! - Oct. 25, 2007

Shared by Amy
We too have been so blessed as we have learned more and more to celebrate each Lord’s Day. A great book (in my opinion) on the subject especially for those who have never been taught about keeping the Sabbath is Celebrating the Sabbath by Bruce Ray.

One of the things that means a lot to me as a mom is each Lord’s Day our family uses paper plates and I do NO dishes. This is huge, because at this point in my life I feel like dishes needing to be washed consume my day.
Also, we don’t go out to eat, buy coffee on the way to church etc. If the Lord asked that not even the sojourners in your gates or your animals not do any work surly he would like it if we did our part to keep our neighbor from working too! But this has really set the day a part for us because every other day can be consumed with errands etc. also.

Like you said, it’s the one day where we can spend hours playing games with our kids because there is nothing else we should be doing. We can stay after church and visit because those home projects will not be getting worked on. Oh what a blessing indeed!

How inspiring. We don't have church on Sunday evenings and so sometimes I tend to do "work" in the afternoon. Thanks for the encouragement to keep the Lord's day holy.

Thanks so much for this!!! I too have 3 very young children....who I adore, of course, but rarely find time before 10pm to "relax". So Sunday tends to be no different, especially since we are a pastor-family :) Yeah, for simple dinners. And thanks for the encouragement to do preparations on Sat....especially with a desire to make Sunday the relaxing day, the special day of the week.

I too discovered Abondante Living - Oct. 27, 2007

And was refreshed with a desire to do more towards a day of rest. I read a book a while back, "Sabbath Keeping" by Lynne M. Baab, which gave me a new perspective - a focus on Relationships rather than on not doing stuff. So now my planning for Sunday - the cooking the meals, the cleaning the house, and ironing clothes, is to give me time for Relationships not because I can't do stuff - Relationships with God, with each other in the family, and God's family too. I have found this too be so freeing.

Fullfilled - Oct. 31, 2007

So many times I see this, families wanting to put the Law into a home that is suppose to be of spirit. The bible says we are done with our teacher -the law is not done but that we are done with it since we now live in the spirit. I know this is a much harder task-I fight with it daily-but putting the Law into our home is not the answer. This of course does not mean that God would not put upon your personal family to find a day of rest, but that would be a personal -spiritual relationship and not the law that would be followed.

Faith~~

Scripture
Galatians 3
11But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

12And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

13Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

23But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

24Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

26For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

On the Seventh Day God blessed and Sanctified the day (Saturday) in the law it was governed we were to rest also. Now that we live in the spirit and not in our flesh - which was under the law- we can take rest when we feel God leads us to, but it is not our law anymore.

Yes, fulfilled - Oct. 31, 2007

But not abolished. We happily obey and teach our children all the other commandments but somehow when it comes to the fourth, we suddenly think we can toss it aside. If it were not still important to God, Christ would not have made reference to our keeping of the Lord's Day as in:

Matthew 24:20
Mark 2:27
Mark 2:28
Luke 6:5

Most importantly, it is God's Day, and so we set it aside as His- as my husband said, the best of everything! In weekly celebration of Christ's fulfillment of the law!

I was raised in typical mainstream evangelicalism so I know where you're coming from. I just can't agree anymore that we need to honor every other commandment BUT the fourth. The American evangelical church at large has lost sight of something important, and it's never a good idea to pick and choose only what we want to from God's Word.

Meant also to say that even if we're wrong, I have a good idea that God would be honored by our taking a full day to celebrate HIM! We're not bound by legalism (which when defined means we would believe that keeping the Sabbath is somehow a requirement of our salvation). We just see that ALL of the Ten Commandments are equally worthy. If we can toss the fourth, why not the sixth? Or the first?
