Here is a touching story I received today in my email from a good friend. The note said I could pass it on and I have chosen to do so through my blog. I'll post my thoughts on the story at the end.
After a few moments of silent prayer, the young man looked at the principal and said, "Sir, with your consent I accept the challenge. Just give me a trial basis." The next morning the young man stood before the class. He said to the class, "Young people, I came here today to conduct school. But I realize I can't do it by myself.
The young teacher told the class that if they were to have school, there would have to be some rules to go by. But he also added that he would allow the students to make up the rules and that he would list them on the blackboard. This was certainly different, the students thought! One young man suggested "NO STEALING." Pretty soon they had 10 rules listed on the board. The teacher then asked the class what the punishment should be for breaking these rules. "Rules are no good unless they enforced", he said. Someone in the class suggested that if the rules were broken, they should receive 10 licks with a rod across theirback with their coat off. The teacher thought that this was pretty harsh, so he asked the class if they would stand by this punishment. The class agreed. Everything went along pretty good for two or three days.
Little Timmy replied, "My daddy's dead and my mother is very poor. I don't have but one shirt, and my mother is washing it today. I wore my big brother's coat so that I could keep warm." That young teacher stood and looked at the frail back with the spine protruding against the skin, and his ribs sticking out. He wondered how he could lay a rod on that little back and without even a shirt on. Still, he knew he must enforce the punishment or the children would not obey the rules. So he drew back to strike little Timmy. Just then Big Tom stood up and came down the aisle. He asked, "Is there anything that says that I can't take little Timmy's whipping for him?" The teacher thought about it and agreed. With that Big Tom ripped his coat Well, did you have to pull out the hanky when you read that? Touching, wasn't it? As I was reading, I was personally touched by Little Timmy. He kind of reminds me of a sinner. Poor, needy, frail, fatherless, and hungry. That poor teacher knew that there was no way Little Timmy could take his punishment. He would never survive it. It took a much stronger person to take the required punishment, the one who was transgressed against, Big Tom.
We're all like Little Timmy until the day we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. We are poor and starving for something (SOMEONE!) to fill our empty souls, so we "steal" whatever we can to fill that void. Unfortunately, the satisfaction doesn't last long and we're "stealing" again. In Jesus, the sinner can be complete (Col. 2:10).
The story says Little Timmy was fatherless, but in reality the sinner's father is the devil (John 8:44-25). The thing is, he isn't a loving, caring father. He only has his best interests in mind. He is a murderer, a liar, and has not one ounce of truth in him. With God, the sinner can have not only the spirit of truth but also the Comforter.
We also see how frail Little Timmy is. The sinner, like Timmy, is weak and has no strength. But through Christ, those that trust in Him can do anything (Phil. 4:13).
Have you ever thought about what Christ gave up for us? Have you ever consider that Christ gave up everything for a pile of stinking, dirty, filth (Isaiah 64:6)? The Rose of Sharon, the Little of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star, the I AM, the Lord of glory, the Lamb without blemish stood in OUR place and took all of OUR sin upon Himself. He set the rules and the punishment. We broke those rules. How amazing it is that for every lie, for every evil, murderous thought, for every idol we took to heart, for every time we dishonored our parents, for every law of His that we broke He took it upon Himself to die for us, to be forsaken of His Father when He was innocent of any wrong doing! He was the one we transgressed against and yet He accept our punishment for us. He knew we were too weak.
Why? Why would He do this? Why would He even take thought of us?
Psalm 144: 3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
I'll tell you why: love (John 3:16; 1 John 4:9), pity (Psalm 103:13), mercy (Psalm 106:1; Psalm 145:8), and compassion (Psalm 86:15)! The very essense of who He is caused Him to be able to stand in a place He didn't have to.
Thank God for His love, thank Him that He stepped into a place that we could not stand in! As spring draws upon us and we prepared to celebrate His death and resurrection next month, let's prepare and renew our hearts by meditating on the most costly gift that anyone has ever given!
Bless His name!
