Homeschool Nations - Prince Edward Island, Canada

Jul. 14, 2009

It's July on PEI!

....which usually means summer is not only in full swing, but seems to actually be more than half over since the warmer months here fly by!  It has been very wet and rainy here this season, which is not so great for tourism, but I personally happen to love rain and thundershowers - we even saw a rainbow in Summerside a few evenings ago! :-)

There have been a few homeschool events planned this summer; already the NB homeschool conference has taken place (put on by Home Educators of New Brunswick, HENB, and held in Sussex), and there have been picnics, a tulip farm field trip in May, a Used Book & Curriculum Sale in Charlottetown, a play at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, the yearly ABEKA Motel Meeting in Stanley Bridge, a fun day at Sandspit and a number of other events.  There will also be interpretive park tours and a visit to Avonlea Village in Cavendish yet to come, not to mention this is the time of year when farm-and garden-fresh produce are available for picking, canning, preserving and enjoying!  All this, plus finding the time for camping, a vacation and even work for the older students can fill up one summer pretty quickly!

In August, we are planning an information meeting for families who are interested in or just starting out with homeschooling.  It will be held in Cornwall, PEI and will address many issues and attempt to answer questions for people as they research home education.  More details will be posted here as they become available and time permits!

Also, we are taking the summer to update and revise our homeschool website, www.PEIHomeSchool.com.  We are hoping to have everything up and working smoothly by September, but in the meantime you are welcome to visit us at the old site.  There are so many people and organizations here in the Maritimes who do much to promote and support home education, we are truly blessed to enjoy this freedom!

In future posts, I hope to give a quick summary of this year's HENB Conference in Sussex, NB since I was present; I find it to be a blessing and well worth the effort every year.  If you live in the Maritimes, I encourage you all to plan to attend next year's event, it is a nice time of renewal and refreshment, and it's encouraging to be with other like-minded families for a few days.  In past years, PEI did hold its own provincial conference in Charlottetown, however, due to limited attendance it was decided that perhaps a number of shorter day or half-day sessions on specific topics, throughout the year, might be more useful to families here, and I think this has proven to be the case.  Perhaps in the future the annual conference will make a re-appearance; in the meantime, it is nice to have the HENB-sponsored event a relatively short drive away!

I hope you are all enjoying your summer; I will be posting again soon, and am already thinking of the new year and making preparations for that.......I love homeschoooling! :-)  Take care and talk to you again soon - feel free to comment, I would love to hear your thoughts on anything posted here.
