Happy, happy birthday, from all of us to you!
My Great Grandma had a birthday this year, and hundreds of people from all around the country came to celebrate it. Why, you ask? It was just a birthday, right? Well, it was her 100th! A century. Mom, Grandma, and I went back to Pennsylvania for the party in April.
Like I said, there were over 200 people in attendance at the party in the brand new fire station. There were family, former students, friends, neighbors... The greeting line stretched WAY out into the parking lot and Grandma sat there in her chair for about 4 hours. Her only disappointment was that she wasn't able to spend more time with each one of her dear friends.
Here's a picture of this amazing lady at the party:
A few months ago, she fell down and was in the hospital for a week (Only 'cause they made her stay. She was good n' ready to wave them goodbye and get home to wash the dishes.). Then two weeks ago she had a heart attack. She was in the hospital for a few days, and now she's back home playing cards with my Great Aunt.
My Aunt says that her memory's not as sharp as it was before (That means she doesn't quite remember ALL the things that happened to her when she was under 5. Can you? She could when we went out to visit), and she is now confined to a wheelchair at church or any other event that she wants to go to, but for being 100 years old, that's not too bad.
She started teaching in the 1920's and stopped in the 70's. I say she 'stopped', but she taught my brother how to read and write. She tried to teach me math, but it gave her high blood pressure. The President gave her the Teacher of the Century Award.
Edited to add: AAH! I forgot to send you over to Canadagirl for more Show 'n Tells! Although I'm sure you all came over here from there, so it probably isn't that much of a problem... :-P |
