Confessions of a Teenage Writer

The reason I've written very, very little of the next book is that I can't think of a name for the main character. I've wracked my mind for ideas and I just can't think of any more!

Names I've tried to put on her:

Riley (Didn't like)
Wendy (too pretty for this character)
Jessina
Jess (Neither Jess or Jessina felt right)
Gertie (Uh... just no...)
Winter (Named another character that)
Robin (Too delicate)
Seraphina (Too long)
Sera (Too plain)
Raina (Didn't fit her)
Sarah (Too sweet)
Tamsin (Already got someone with a name like it)
Brianna (Too close to another character's name)
Reba (Doesn't sound young enough)
Sonja (Too sweet)

Just ignore me. I'm whining again. Chances are good that a name will smack me upside the head one day and I'll wonder why I didn't think of that before. If it was a guy's name, I could come up with a list of cool names half a mile long. Not so with girls' names. I've the most terrible luck with those. Andrea would be the most perfectest name for her, but Mrs. Marlow is using it in her books.

On a different note but pertaining to names, the great thing about having my own computer is that nifty ability to add all the names I make up for the off-world species to the dictionary. *Grin*

Have you tried googling online for baby name directories? I love the fact that they often include alternate spellings and the meaning of the name.

You should get a baby name book and it also gives the meaning of names too. I bet that would give you some good ideas. [ 0=

Hi Jen,

lol. When i started my book I sat at a baby name website for hours trying to figure out a name that would fit the main character! Try googleing (or searching) Baby names there will be tons to choose from! I love your blog, and your pic.

How about Jessa or Jenna? Close to Jess or Jessina but a little different.

Perhaps you can use something about her character to find a name that means something like that. For example, in "The Little Princess" the name for the main character is "Sarah" which means "princess"

I LIKE Robyn...not at all dainty if you ask me, but that would be because mine isn't a dainty girl, but more of a tomboy! Wishing you well as you decide upon a name!

Thanks for your kind words about the poem...some of them shout at me that they're SUPPOSED to be songs, but I'm NOT gifted at melodies and such. Oh, well

Blessings,

Dec. 26, 2007 - How did I miss this post?

Hmmm...how did I miss this post? Hey, jen, you go right ahead and use Andrea if you want. Names aren't copyrighted or anything, just like titles aren't. LOL
Well, I'm handing my story off to my....personal....editor tomorrow at lunch at the Blk. Diamond Bakery. Hope she doesn't slash and trash it! LOL
So....when are your revisions going to be completed so I can "slash and trash" yours? just kidding.
Seriously, is this the ms you are considering presenting to editors at OCW next summer? Are you still thinking of going? Another thought is this: There is a Teen Track (for teen writers) at Mt. Hermon in CA. Costs more to go, but I haven't been for a long time and I might want to go. E-mail me and I'll give you the link and you can check it out. Think about it. 5 whole days with other teen writers and an instructor and all Christian! We could room together.
Sorry for the ramblings....
