Very Important!

Hey guys, I know lots of you are writing stories, posting them here on your blogs, and have intentions of then publishing the story.

The thing is...

A publisher's not even going to look at something that has been offered in full for free to the general public for any length of time. I know it's a nice idea that we post stuff and get critiquing, but it's really in your best interest to not do it all. 10% of a story is about the most you should post, and, in my opinion, that's still a little much. It's not just that people can steal your story (which has happened in the past), but publishers figure that if people have been able to read it for free (draft or otherwise), they're not going to buy it.

Not to be Johnny Raincloud over here (or Jenny Raincloud, I guess), but really and seriously, if you want to publish... please, please, please don't post it.

Just stumbled across your blog. Lol.

What you say is very true. However if you only post excerpts from you book then it is fine. Your publisher won't mind. Putting the whole thing on your blog is just plain stupid.

Hmmm...good points. I've limited myself to five chapters posted--as BlogBoy pointed out, it'd be just a bit stupid to stick the whole thing on there ;-). I never considered that publishers might not like it to be available to the public, even excerpts. Perhaps it would be some help to remove it should the manuscript ever be submitted to a publishing house...hm.
Jenny Raincloud! That's quite funny...ah, reminds me of Riley Poole... :-D

LOL!! (I don't use that acronym often...but hey, mention Riley and I can't help it!) Ah, is he not one of the most memorable movie characters of all time?? :-)
Well, I'm glad to have helped boost your self-image ;-). May you have many more...er, agreements...in the future!

OH I know what you mean. I have put any of my novel online where people can view it for that reason... they get to see it when it's published and copyrighted!

Yes, I wouldn't post an entire story you hope to get published. However, I did post that Young Andi story, but the way I figure it, if my publisher wants to expand my ever-popular Andi books for the little kids (like...right...they'll ever do that?), then I don't think they're going to disqualify the first one just because a handful of HSB blogging kids read it.

The truth of the matter is, having a "following" on a blog is something publishers like to hear in that so-important "market survey" a potential author includes in his/her book proposal. For that reason, writing articles, posting excerpts, creating a "buzz" about your work is what blog marketing is all about.

Just my thoughts. Oh...don't worry about anybody stealing your ideas. That's the least of your worries about posting your stories on your blog. Trust me.

Boy, Lyric, I just LOVE reading your blog. Wish I had time to check in more often; wish I had time to deliver such good and interesting stuff. And so far I think you are 100% on the Mindtrap answers. Do you look them up in a hidden Mintrap game in your closet? LOL
