Writing Recipes... or not...

I don't share the original copies of my recipes. It's not that I'm selfish or anything, and if I were to type one up, you would understand. Actually... here's an example. This is what I'm making for dinner tonight, copied word-for-word:

Kidneys
Pintos, Black
Tom, Corn (drain)
Newman Cuis.

Didja get that? If you did... I would be amazed. The translation to English from Jennian is:

Taco Soup

Brown 1 pound of hamburger, add ~1T Southwest seasoning and onion powder. Put in crockpot along with 1 can each of Kidney beans, Pinto beans, Black beans, Tomato sauce, and Corn (drained). Pour one jar of salsa into a blender and puree until almost smooth*. Dump that in the crockpot. Heat. Devour.

*Certains of my family will not eat chunky salsa, so it has to be pureed.

See? If you look at the first one, I didn't mention the hamburger or seasonings at all!

I have no idea why I just posted that. *grin* Laura and Katie, does this type of recipe-writing look familiar in any way? :-P

Of course it looks familiar! It's because we have been taught to cook from women who give instruction thusly:

"Mom, how do you tell when baked potatoes are done?"

"Squeeze them with the potholder, and when they go mmph, they're done."

Well, I did, and they were. :-)

Miss Laura,

The scary part is that I know exactly what you mean by "mmph". ;-)

I read your post, and then the comment by Miss Laura, and then your comment, to my Mom, and she laughed really hard. She said she had never heard of that method of testing a baked potato, she always just stuck the potato with a fork, and if it went in easily, it's done!

It is funny that members of your family don't like chunky salsa, I can't imagine eating chunky salsa; our family are die-hard chunky salsa eaters!

Have a very bright, very cheerful day!

It most certainly looks familiar! Why would anyone want to write a recipe down anyways? No one would ever follow it! ;-)

A few days ago I created a delicious new casserole, which my family absolutely loved and devoured. They told me to write down my recipe so I could repeat it, and it started like this:

"Fill the biggest white casserole dish half-way full of chopped potatoes, then cover it with a bunch of chopped up leftover chicken....."

Next time I made the dish I tried to write down more exact proportions, but it really was a waste of time 'cause I'm never going to look at it. I'll just throw it together however it looks good! ;-)

I can't say all of my non-recipe cooking attempts have been successful though. Yesterday I tried throwing together some muffins with leftover squash (just call them pumpkin muffins and they'll eat 'em), and for some reason they refused to bake completely. I added more baking soda, thinking that if they rose higher they'd bake better, but it still didn't do anything. I didn't have any more flour either, so that wasn't an option. I don't know what the problem was! We ate them anyways. They were overly moist, but at least they tasted decent! ;-)

My recipes consist of "open it" and "put it in until it looks right". My sister and I cook together sometimes, I pick out the spices and shake until she tells me to stop. We work well together because she thinks whatever it is is raw when I think it is burnt, so we take it out of the oven and it is just right. I don't know what I'd do without her there... We're good pals.
I really have to go, but sorry I haven't been around lately! God Bless,
Christina

How would I know where the gold came from? I think they mean "gold" as in "money." Our money USED to be backed by GOLD, you know.... LOL
OK, so hit me with a wet noodle. It wasn't my cleverest choice for a thoughtful Mindtrap Monday.

When are you getting a chat box? Posting comments is sometimes a pain on HSB, if the server is pokey.
