Chronicles of a family at home

Baby Talk

For years, my friends and family have been urging me to start a blog.  Possibly because they were very tired of hearing me yap on endlessly about my various passions!  Strangely, I resisted.  I honestly didn't think my life would be interesting enough to bother recording.  (And maybe I was right!)  But occasionally, even I hear something that just BEGS to be commented on...

My mother called me today after Oprah was on to tell me there was a woman on there who had identified 5 different sounds that all babies make, along with the meaning of those sounds.  As the mother of a 5.5 month old baby, let me tell you -- my ears perked up.  If true, this is right up there with finding the Rosetta Stone. And if it could save me from another sleepless night, maybe even the holy grail.  Here are the sounds and their meanings:

  • Neh="I'm hungry"
  • Owh="I'm sleepy"
  • Heh="I'm experiencing discomfort"
  • Eair="I have lower gas"
  • Eh="I need to burp"
  • I think some of them could prove useful to my spouse, even.

Seriously, though.  Did you ever look into the face of your beautiful newborn and just know that if he could speak, he'd say something terribly clever?  My little Tinky Winky (or sometimes "STINKY Winky") is like that.  His face is just brimming with wisdom, alternating with humor.  I'm glad we'll be keeping him here at home, so I don't have to miss a moment of his personality unfolding.

But I digress.  "Owh" and so I must go.

Welcome to HomeschoolBlogger! Interesting theory. I wonder what they would say about the babies whose cry is all the same and doesn't change?

As I watched this yesterday, I remembered hearing my babies make those same noises. Especially with my fussy baby, I could have SO used this information even if it was only to make myself feel better. I was a desperate woman in those days! Welcome to HSB!

It doesn't seem like I get to talk to you nearly enough, and so I am glad that I will at least be able to keep up with you in the blogosphere. Welcome!

Now for a question. What do you suppose is the meaning of a combo of all the above sounds at a volume that easily silences even the loudest jet engine?

    ;)
