W is for washing mouths out
|
Before I had children, I was going to be a very "enlightened parent." Let's just say I'd be very interested in hearing what kind of soap that you all use when washing your childrens' mouths out!

We don't use soap, we use apple cider vinegar. According to my kids it tastes nasty and I'm not worried about them getting sick from it. We just have them put it in their mouth and then spit it out. They are allowed a drink afterwards. Usually, now we just have to theaten them with it.

Isn't that what the mom used in The Christmas Movie that runs for 24 hours on Christmas Day ... the one where he wants the Red Ryder BB gun!! That boy let loose with some words to get that consequence though!
Maybe showing the result of the
Baby Oragel(sp?) would work?? I mean I would think that would likely burn a whole right through your tongue???
Just for the record ... I think 'enlightened parenting' is bunk!

Oddly enough, it was BOTH children!
I wound up using baby wash. Figured that couldn't be toxic, and am told that it tastes very bad. However, here's a comment heard around the house: "Well, Mommy, it tastes better than MOST soap!"

We have used whatever was on hand. I think the last time it was ivory. As far as toxic, the worst thing that a little soap would do, would usually be a case of the runs. Maybe that would be an additional fun consequence! You can tell that I am definitely not an enlightened parent!

Jul. 18, 2007 - Soap in the mouth....

I am at my wits end as most other mothers are. My 3yr (going on 16) old child has just completely gone off her little rocker. She has recently begun mouthing back, telling me "no I don't think so" and such nonsense I don't think I ever would have said to my mother for fear of a smack in the mouth. I have threatened the soap in the mouth but have yet to use it until tonight. She was lucky in the sense I only wet the bar (Caress), rubbed my fingers on it, and rubbed it on her tongue. She was allowed to rinse her mouth out after getting the taste. Do any of you feel guilty afterwards? Like you are somehow doing some great harm? Please let me know I am going to pull my hair out soon.

I totally felt guilty after.
But not really sorry, because it was effective. It has been about 6 months, and the soap-in-the-mouth exercise actually worked. It was what was needed: a complete redirection. So hang in there and do what is necessary. Even your children will thank you later. My kids actually giggle about it.

"Your never fully clean 'til your ZEST fully clean" It has not however affected my daughter. She is mouthy today, and still as defiant as she ever has been. OK so besides the soap in the mouth for the occasional nasty word, talk back, and down right nastiness. What other advise can someone please give me for this unruly child? Anything please?
