Chronicles of a family at home

Mt. Laundry

It is amazing how much laundry one medium-sized family can produce.  Oldest Son (OS) has been sick since yesterday, so I went ahead and took the 2 days off school.  And what have I done with all my free time?  Why, I did laundry.  Mountains of laundry.  And many more peaks of grimey, muddy garments still await my attention.  One would think that some toilets could have gotten scrubbed during the frantic and all-too-short baby naptimes, but alas, no.  Only laundry.  (Okay, and a few of you called on the phone, too, but that doesn't count since it was fun!)

OS has a fever (yesterday it was 102, and today it is 100, so we're making progress) and lots of congestion in both head and chest.  I tried my favorite home remedies on him, including serving organic, free-range chicken broth infused with tons of garlic and a smidge of cayenne pepper; chicken soup with more garlic, celery and carrots, ginger root, and some brown rice; hours-long hot baths in my jacuzzi tub with drops of RC and Thieves Essential Oil (cleared my nose out just smelling it!); and lots of echinacea tea.

What are your best home remedies for the epizootig?  ("Epizootig" is my mother's word for any nebulous multi-symptom illness.)  My mother used to give us tablespoonfuls of this disgusting burgundy wine on the grounds that it would kill any germs.  I've never had cod-liver oil, but I'd have to guess that its flavor is on the same plane as burgundy.  That's one for the "circular file."  But I'd be interested in trying anything that doesn't scar the child for life!

Apr. 17, 2007 - we use

Homeopathic remedies. My first guess is usually to use Kali Bic because of the thick nose element. But get thee the book Everyone's Guide to Homeopathics. It is my "get well" bible. All the rememdies are at the health food store. They don't take care of symptoms...what they do is help the body heal faster and better. For symptom relief, you still want cool rags, a humidifier, chicken soup.... hope he feels better soon!

Apr. 17, 2007 - epizootic

Just have to weigh in here with some biology. Epizootic is a real word! My dad used to use it too, and I always figured he'd made it up, but no (amazing what 12 years of college will teach you...). An epizootic is a disease that spreads through an animal population, and has the potential to also spread to humans. ("epi" = upon and "zoo" = the root word for animals).

Sorry I don't have any good home remedies like Tia, but I do hope he feels better soon!

All these years and I thought my mom just had a vivid imagination for made-up words!
