Words that just don't get used often enough

Posted in Words that don't get used enough

When I was a kid, I used to read the dictionary when I was supposed to be sleeping.  Now you know where Oldest Son got his penchant for filling his head with trivia.  Nowadays, I just use http://www.webster.com:

AUSPICES -
1 : observation by an augur especially of the flight and feeding of birds to discover omens
2 plural : kindly patronage and guidance auspices of the local historical society>
3 : a prophetic sign; especially : a favorable sign

A beautiful word from Dr. Hibiscus' blog:

ESCARPMENT (is that not a lovely word?) -
1 : a steep slope in front of a fortification
2 : a long cliff or steep slope separating two comparatively level or more gently sloping surfaces and resulting from erosion or faulting
