Chronicles of a family at home

Big sloppy family

My dad turns 74 this month, and with my brother in town visiting, it seemed the perfect time for a party.  Usually, I get a little stressed when preparing dinner for that many people (10 grown-ups).  I'm just not organized enough to time the dishes to get done at the same time.  Perhaps I need a homeschool student to work out the timing based on the recipes next time?

But strangely, as everyone pitched in and the house got louder and louder with laughter, playful arguing, and a little sniping from at least a couple of Nerf guns, it occurred to me how lucky I am.  I have this big wonderful, crazy family, just brimming with personality and humorous, endearing imperfection and I wouldn't have it any other way.  I leaned over to my Dad, who had commandeered the making of the obligatory corn bread, and said, "Just think, Dad -- none of these people would be here if it weren't for you!"  And we marveled at the many faces with squinty blue eyes, which disappear when smiles erupt and shared a good giggle.

74 promises to be a very good year.

A Happy Birthday to your Dad!! Sometimes I get so focused on the things that I think matter, when in reality it's not THINGS, it's the people!!! So my new motto is, "let's party and have fun, who cares if the dishes match or the food tastes good!" I want to start celebrating the PEOPLE in my life, and not the EVENT!
