I was listening to the BBC News the other night and the word "scupper" was used to explain the effect of a political action on the outcome of a program. I thought "Wow! Now there's a word I can sink my teeth into." From now on, whenever something goes south, I'm going to know it was scuppered.

scupper
-noun
3. any opening in the side of a building, as in a parapet, for draining off rain water.
I have heard the phrase 'been scuppered" before, but it seems much less dramatic if it just means that you got poured down a drain.

If you say "I feel like I just got poured down a drain", well now THAT'S saying something!
"I've been scuppered" takes on a whole new mental image then.

We have a book about Scuppers the Sailor Dog (or something like that). There's a great song in it for which Adele made up a tune (how about she sings it as part of the Leslie Thanksgiving?)
