Oct. 5, 2005 - Just taking it easy today...

Well, after yesterdays fall out with ds, we decided to take it easy today.  I am having my new stove delivered today anyway!!!!!!!!!!  We are also getting a brand new oak book case...a huge one!  It is coming today too!!  I am thrilled to finally have a place to store all my nice school books.  The kids are constantly taking my good books and leaving them all over.  Now we will have a specail place for them where they can sit and read all they want.  Praise God for that!!  Now, I just need to figure out where to put it...it's huge!!  This could be a problem.

I spoke with my hubby yesterday evening about ds's new found attitude about reading and he thinks ds is just too young.  I have to agree.  He is such a young six and even then he has never, ever done anyting early and when he does, he works at it until he masters it.  Here I am, a speech therapist, I know all the facts about language learning and it's direct relationship to reading.  David was a late talker with tons of speech and language issues.  He was in therapy for two years!  There is a direct relationship between a childs ability to produce speech sounds and their ability to learn to read.  Studies have even showed children who exhibit severe speech delays almost always have some kind of reading issue and children with early language usually end up good readers.  So, why am I so worried when I have all the facts??  Well, this is my baby..not one of my clients.    I am going to leave in Gods hands.  I am also going to take my own advice and back off...allow him to lead a bit in the area of reading.  I know he is learning, he shows me everyday!  He's bright and curious...parise God for that.

My dd's were early... but although dd was reading at age three, and the boys didn't start until 7&8, they caught up to their "grade levels" within a year and a half. It was struggle after struggle until they were ready... and then they just zooooomed by! You're doing the right thing:) Isn't homeschooling great???

A speech therapist!? That was my goal when I started college, only WWC cut their program during my freshman year. I wasn't ready to go to LLU, so I switched and took a double major in elementary ed and speech communication.

When Tony was six months old I started using my version of ASL with him. At age nine months, he signed his first word to me, and we still use it to this day. You stated that there is a link between speech delays with reading delays. Since Tony started reading before the age of five, I'm wondering if part of that is because of the sign language stimulation I gave him? I'm curious.

Oct. 7, 2005 - Good Book to Read

One of the best books I ever read was "Better late than Early" by the homeschooling pioneers, Raymond and Dorothy Moore. It is a wonderful book if you can get your hands on it - a real encouragement to let the child learn something (reading, advanced math, etc.) when they're ready, and what to do to prepare them in the meantime. Just a thought...
