Oct. 18, 2005 - Disguested with Dr. Phil.
Well, I am usually disguested with most talk show hosts these days but Dr. Phil really ticked me off today. There was a couple disagreeing about homeschooling on his show today. While he supported the homeschooling up through the 8th grade he said that it didn't work for high schoolers becuase they needed the socialization at that age. Please!!! High school is the worse time in a teens life in the first place and to put them in an environment where independance and individuality is NOT encouraged...I think that is a formula for failure. These poor kids need parental supervision more than ever in the teen years (even if they fight it, they still want it). They need love, unconditional acceptance and the freedom to learn the way that best suits them...not to be forced into cookie-cutter classrooms and forced to learn from cookie-cutter text books the things that some board of directors deemed important for them to learn. How is that helpful and what the heck does it have to do with socialization. My DD was working 20+ hours a week at amom and pop vitamin store, bought her own car by the time she was 17, bought her own lap top, attended our local community college for four semesters (at the tender age of 16 and 17), volunteered with a Christian theater organization, helped with my home business and still managed to be on the college honor role, have tons of friends and a close walk with God!! She would have never, ever gotten any of those opportunities if she were in a classroom full of her peers, stuck in a rut, worrying about what to wear to the next dance. Please, Dr. Phil, educate yourself before jumping to such false conculsions about homeschooling our teens!!

| What Dr. Phil and others don't understand is that most home educated children would not WANT to return to high school after being at home. Who on earth would want to go to that atmosphere and life everyday?? I'm not only glad my children don't have to worry about not having a date for the dance or what to wear each day....I'm glad I don't have to deal with the issues I hear my friends who choose ps for their children go thru. My son is going on a marine biologist trip this winter - something he could not have done if he was in mainstream school. This is a great opportunity to him and one provided due to our choice to homeschool high school! |
