Dec. 13, 2005 - I've been reading....
...Jane M. Healy's book, Endangered Minds. It was slow at first and I do skip over all the technical jargon but overall, I have enjoyed it. Coming from a language therapist background, most of what she had to say about lingustics was old news to me. But I do enjoy sparking my own mind at times, rewiring my neurons, so to speak. I get so caught up in my boys education I forget, at times, to keep my mind fresh and sharp. So, this book is just what I needed. Sort of like a booster shot, per say. I have been really making an effort to turn off the tv every morning at 9 and keeping it off until 3pm. It has been difficult because I do daycare and I didn't realize how much I depend on that 'babysitter' to do my job. I have had to set out activities for the boys to engage in and while this takes effort on my part, it has been worth it. The kids really don't mind and they are interacting with each other better. I have also been thinking on how I can better include language in my day. How I can encourage thinking in my boys. I think I need to revamp all my toys...get rid of some and replace them with better choices. But what though?? I guess I make too much of the play things around here, focusing on what they are instead of what they can be used for. The boys have never had any problem making their own toys when the need arises. Perhaps I should just let things be in that department. Christmas is coming and they are getting tons of models and legos from family members...that will occupy them for some time. Well, I better start setting a better example and get off this computer and 'interact' with my kids. God Bless all of you out there.

I think every parent should read this book.
I'm giving it to my married daughter and her husband to read before they have kids. They watch a LOT of TV. I don't want my grandkids (future) to be glued to the tube all day.

My boys play best with toys that do NOT require batteries!
Their fav's are:
*large cardboard bricks
*wooden train set
*Tinkertoys
*dress-up box-- various hats, swords, etc
*soapy, sudsy water in a container outside to "wash" dishes
*sidewalk chalk and bubbles
*Play-doh with rolling pin, cookie cutters and the Fun Factory
By the way, I LOVE your avatar pic-- it is SOOO beautiful!!! :-)
And I'm right there with ya except we cut back on the tv a while back...now we need to cut back on the computer! So bye!!!
Love,
