From Clara Loy:
I am a private flute instructor who just moved to the St. Louis area, and I am looking for students. I am wondering if there might be any parents or students in your network who would be interested in flute lessons.
I received my undergraduate in flute performance from Eastern Illinois University; my Masters in Music from Northwestern State University; and for the last four years I have been teaching a large flute studio in Ft. Worth, including very beginner to adult amateur students. I have experience teaching music theory. I am also a freelance performer.
Thank you so much for your time!

Homeschool Mornings at the Magic House
October 5, November 2, January 11, February 1, and March 8
9:30-11:30 a.m.
On this morning, the entire Magic House is closed to the public, and open only to homeschoolers!! Children may spend the entire time exploring or may participate in a special optional educational program the last half hour (will be announced over the PA).
Price? $5.00 per person...sorry, no passes or discount tickets
It's really nice to just let your kids run wild (well, maybe not "wild") without having to worry about them--the building will be full of nothing but wonderful homeschool families (and nice workers).
Sign up via the SHARE website (www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share ....click on the public calendar, find the date and click on it, scroll down and see where you can sign up) or e-mail Cathy at Ekcjmullins@gmail.com. Or come at the last minute. Cash works or checks made out to SHARE. I will be at the door collecting money. Be sure to use the entrance to the new Educational Center...do not use the front door.
Note: We need a minimum of 75 paid admissions to make this work (they need to pay workers to come in for those two hours), so sign up is encouraged. But even if you did not sign up, please come--it's a big house!!!! THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL HOMESCHOOLERS, SO INVITE YOUR FRIENDS.
__________________________________________________________________________________________
"Saxon Math Consultant/High School Math Teacher is available to tutor high school students in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. Cost: $25/hour"
I know that when I was homeschooling, some of my friends felt very uncomfortable teaching the high school math courses. Since I have a fondness for homeschoolers, I thought maybe I would see if any homeschoolers needed help first."
As you can see from the ad, I work for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt as a Saxon Math Consultant, and have taught math for the past 7 years in a Christian High School. Although Saxon is my specialty, I can tutor in other courses as well.
Unlike Sylvan, there would be no long term commitments. Students come as often, or as infrequently as they need.

1. If you plan to attend the Eckert's Orchard Field trip, please let me know at wdworkman@aol.com .
Tuesday, September 22 9:00 Eckert's Orchard Field Trip
We will meet at the Wood River Shop N Save (1904 E Edwardsville Rd.) at 9:00 to caravan to the Millstadt, IL Eckert's location. $7.00 per child includes Fun Farm admission, wagon ride, petting farm, shows, apple cider & one bag of pick-your-own apples. There is no charge for adults unless you would like to purchase additional apples. Picnic tables are available. Bring your own lunch or purchase food at the farm. Sign up at the meeting or RSVP to wdworkman@aol.com. Payment can be cash or checks made out to "RCHEC" the day of the field trip. (If you plan to meet us at the Farm instead of Shop N Save, please let me know so we won't wait for you. Eckert's has requested that we be ready to start no later than 10:15.)
2. Because we have received extra money from our 'Boxtops' program, we will not be asking for a membership donation this year; however, please fill out the membership form and get it back to me for the directory. you can send it via e-mail or to my home:
Janet Workman
3418 Gilham Ave
Alton, IL 62002
3. If you would like to get more involved with the group, consider one of the following opportunities:
PARTY COORDINATOR - organize Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Easter parties; the Valentine's & Easter Parties can be held at our regular meeting place & time, the Christmas party usually needs to be at another location since that is also a busy time at the church.
EVENING OF CELEBRATION - (an end of the year evening that dad's, grandparents, etc. can attend) decide where & when our end of the year celebration will be. This could include an awards ceremony and/or a fair where the children can display their work.
PE, PLAY DAY - In the past, we have had weekly park day when we weather permits. More organized activities could be added.
NURSING HOME OUTREACH - In past years, the children have practiced songs to sing at area nursing homes. If singing isn't your thing, I'm sure that they would appreciate any type of visit that you put together.
BOWLING - Call Bowl Haven the week before our monthly bowling day to make sure they know we're coming; collect the money (1.75/game) from everyone and turn it in at the end of bowling time.
FUNDRAISERS - Organize a fundraiser; we have several fundraiser type catalogs to pick from or you could try to organize something on your own.
MOM"S NIGHT OUT - Organize some "Mom's only" socializing
SCIENCE/ART/GEOGRAPHY/HISTORY/? FAIR - organize a science fair type evening, at the end of the year, where the children can show of their work. This could be combined with the Evening of Celebration.
PRESCHOOL/YOUNG ELEMENTARY COORDINATOR - organize activities that will appeal to our younger members; could be library story times, nature center trips, shorter field trips, etc.

RCHEC Events
TOMORROW - Friday, May 22 2:00 p.m. BOWLING at Bowl Haven in Alton. $1.85 per person/per game includes shoe rental. Please sign in & pay before you bowl.
NEXT WEEK - Our End of the Year Celebration will be on Friday, May 29, 6:00 p.m., in the Community Room at the Bethalto Village Hall. Pizza, Fried Chicken & Drinks will be provided. If you'd like to bring something to share, we'll need salads, side dishes, or desserts. Please RSVP by May 26th so I have an idea of how much food to order. Grandparents or other special friends & relatives are welcome.
This will also be a chance for the kids to display any of the work they've done this year. Tables will be available in the room to set up science projects, history projects, artwork, etc. or just samples of what they've been working on. Little ones could bring drawings or favorite books they've read this year. The room will be open all afternoon if you'd like to come in and set up your work before dinnertime. (This is definitely optional. - If your kids don't want to set up a presentation, we still want you to join us for the celebration.)
Since June 5th will be our last regular meeting for this school year we'll have a few things going on that are a little different:
1) Abundant Life has been very hospitable in allowing us to use their facilities every month. I'd like to take a collection next month that we can donate to one of their ministries. If you have a couple of dollars that you'd like to donate, there will be a collection can at the June meeting. I'll also have a Thank You card to sign.
2) The June meeting will be a chance to buy, sell, trade or give away your used homeschooling/children's items. Mark the things that you'd like to sell with your name & a price. There will also be a FREE table - worksheets that never got used, half-done activity books, homemade teaching games that you've outgrown, etc. - anything you'd like to give away might be useful to another homeschooling family.
3) Our final collection for Oasis will be diapers. Bring any size or brand you'd like to donate. (You can also bring them to Bowling or the 5/29 dinner if it's more convenient.)

PRAYER REQUEST We have had in our home a 17 year old for the past week. We are the legal guardians of him now (until he turns 18). He is from a broken home, been in numerous settings, behind in school, and is not a Christian (yet!). Please pray for us to minister in this child's life, to help him catch up on school and to have a chance at a better future than he may have had otherwise.
I also wish that the whole group know about this so they can also pray. Even though this past week has been wonderful, he is still a teen and I know I can expect some rocky territory!
Also, if anyone has used 10th through 12th grade curriculum, I would be able to use it. He is splintered in his achievements, thus the request for 10th through 12th.
Thank you
Starlla

Dear Editor:
The most important component of any civilization is its religion. Religion is the underlying principle which allows civilization to exist. In order to be a civilized people, the vast majority of people must acknowledge, love and worship God.
We have been taught otherwise, however. We have been taught to believe that our civilization is based upon freedom, democracy, capitalism, our constitution, science and technology and so forth.
Democracy, however, cannot work as the primary organizing principle of civilization.
Capitalism does not work as the primary organizing principle of civilization.
Freedom does not work as the organizing principle of civilization.
Constitutions cannot work as the primary organizing principles of civilization.
Science cannot work as the organizing principle of civilization.
Humanism does not work as the organizing principle of civilization.
The separation of church and state cannot work as the organizing principle of civilization.
Socialism does not work as the organizing principle of civilization.
Communism does not work as the organizing principle of civilization.
Environmentalism cannot serve as the primary organizing principle of civilization.
Darwinism cannot work as the organizing principle of civilization.
Globalization cannot work as the organizing principle of civilization.
The internet cannot serve as the organizing principle of civilization.
Education that is not centered on God is not an organizing principle of civilization.
None of these things individually, nor any combination of these things can serve as the organizing principle of civilization. There is only one principle upon which civilization can be organized and maintained and that is religion.
Western civilization is not democracy, capitalism, science and freedom. Western civilization is Christianity.
We are a civilized people only to the extent that we embrace God.

From Trivia Today:
The first Crayola crayons were produced by cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith in 1903. The pair made the crayons from paraffin wax and colored pigments, in a pack of just eight simple colors: red, blue, yellow, green, violet, orange, black and brown.
Since then, the company has produced over a 100 billion crayons. In 2007, the subsidiary of Hallmark Cards became "Crayola LLC". Crayola has its headquarters in Forks Township, Pennsylvania.
The name "Crayola" was created by Alice Stead Binney, a former school teacher. She put together the French word "craie", which means "chalk", and "ola," from "oleaginous", which means "oily", and came up with "Crayola".
Crayola makes 120 colors of crayons today. There are 19 shades of blue, 20 types of green, 23 shades of red, 8 different yellows, 16 types of purples, 14 shades of oranges, 11 browns, 2 grays, 1 silver, 1 white, 2 black shades, 1 gold and 2 types of copper.
Back in 2000, Crayola developed an online poll to find out what crayon color was America's favorite, and the result was blue.
According to a Yale University study of American adults, the smell of Crayola crayons is ranked number 18 when it comes to the 20 most recognizable smells.

Start collecting the homeschool items you've outgrown. Since most of us are wrapping up our studies in May, our June 5th meeting will be a chance to sell or swap books, curriculum, etc. Also, start thinking about what you'd like to do as a group over the summer. We could have playdays at the park or continue meeting at the church once a month for some air-conditioned playtime. I know it's hard to get people together during the summer months, but a few activities would be a good opportunity to meet people that will be homeschooling for the first time this fall.

Exhibit Night: We would like to hold an Exhibit Night (end of April/early May) to give the students an opportunity to show off some of their work. Don't have anything to show? There's still plenty of time. Exhibits can include anything: essay, poem, short story, research, art, science, history, geography, etc., and they can exhibit as many as they'd like. Each child will have an opportunity to talk about their exhibits. We have not set the date yet because we are looking for a facility. If you know of one, please contact Amy Barnes or Sue Ellen Rayborn. Thanks!

Two Plans for Keeping a Clean House While Homeschooling:
Home Management For Homeschool Families
Homeschool is school, but it's home, too--and housework will be with us always. How do you manage to keep up with household chores while homeschooling your children?
Lower your standards. Two-career families with household help may achieve that pristine designer look, but a homeschooling home is rumpled and comfortable. Accept the fact that a homeschooler's decorating scheme can be best described as "Early Science Experiment." Forget the decorator frills and concentrate on the most important home management tasks: meals, clothes, keeping the health department at bay. You've got better things to do, like teach your children!
Plan, plan, plan! Homeschool families can get by with seat-of-the-pants home management only so long. Savvy homeschoolers set up simple home management routines for shopping, cooking, laundry, and cleaning. Write them in your Household. Notebook, or set up a simple tickler file for household tasks. Get it in writing, and you've taken the first step to getting it done.
Bring your children onboard. Housework is a part of life, and should be part of your curriculum. Integrate math lessons with shopping and cooking. Examine the chemistry of surfactants as you do the laundry. Older children learn about child development as they entertain little ones while you school the kids in the middle. Sending teens to do the shopping or setting them to pay the family bills teaches consumer education in a real-life setting. Harness those little hands to help out at home, and your future sons- and daughters-in-law will rise up and call you blessed.
Schedule the housework first. Add rock-bottom necessary chores to the daily schedule or planner before planning each homeschool day. Meal preparation, child care and essential laundry chores can be delegated to children or planned for breaks between scheduled school activities. Schedule the chores first, and they'll get done without impeding the school day.
Look for new methods to save time. Learn to do home management chores the modern way. Many homeschoolers find bulk freezer cooking saves time each day. Read more about bulk freezer cooking with our OrganizedHome.Com Guide to Freezer Cooking. Modern speed cleaning methods involve team concepts ideal for home schooling families. Find out more about efficient cleaning with our Clean House Guide.
Stoke your own fires with a support group. Being a home schooling parent is a hard, if rewarding, job. With all the demands of children and school and spouse and house, it's easy to burn out. Build time for rejuvenation and renewal into your own home management routines. It sounds paradoxical, but it's true: the more you feed yourself, the more you have to give to others. Find a supportive friend or support group, and feed your soul!
OR
Ten Rules of Housekeeping
1. Vacuuming too often weakens the carpet fibers. Say this with a serious face, and shudder delicately whenever anyone mentions Carpet Fresh.
2. Dust bunnies cannot evolve into dust rhinos when disturbed. Rename the area under the couch "The Galapagos Islands" and claim an ecological exemption.
3. Layers of dirty film on windows and screens provide a helpful filter against harmful and aging rays from the sun. Call it an SPF factor of 5 and leave it alone.
4. Cobwebs artfully draped over lampshades reduces the glare from the bulb, thereby creating a romantic atmosphere. If your husband points out that the light fixtures need dusting, simply look affronted and exclaim, "What? And spoil the mood?"
5. In a pinch, you can always claim that the haphazard tower of unread magazines and newspapers next to your chair provides the valuable Feng Shui aspect of a tiger, thereby reducing your vulnerability. Roll your eyes when you say this.
6. Explain the mound of pet hair brushed up against the doorways by claiming you are collecting it there to use for stuffing handsewn play animals for underprivileged children.
7. If unexpected company is coming, pile everything unsightly into one room and close the door. As you show your guests through your tidy home, rattle the door knob vigorously, fake a growl and say, "I'd love you to see our Den, but Fluffy hates to be disturbed and the shots are SO expensive."
8. If dusting is REALLY out of control, simply place a showy urn on the coffee table and insist that "THIS is where Grandma wanted us to scatter her ashes..."
9. Don't bother repainting. Simply scribble lightly over a dirty wall with an assortment of crayons, and try to muster a glint of tears as you say, "Junior did this the week before that unspeakable accident... I haven't had
the heart to clean it..."
10. Mix one-quarter cup pine-scented household cleaner with four cups of water in a spray bottle. Mist the air lightly. Leave dampened rags in conspicuous locations. Develop an exhausted look, throw yourself onto the
couch, and sigh, "I clean and I clean and I still don't get anywhere..." I think I'll take a break and check my E-mail!

Kids' Science Challenge
Some Interesting Websites:
I'm hoping you can help us spread the word about the Kids' Science Challenge to home schoolers in your area. We've created a fun way to turn kids on to science, and it's completely funded by the National Science Foundation, so there are absolutely no costs to enter and participate.
In brief, we're looking for mentors to help 3rd to 6th graders come up with entries for the competition. Along the way, we have a suite of online activities for kids and their leaders to explore, and curricula that teachers can use which relate the project to classroom Science Standards. The first 1000 Kids Science Challenge entrants receive hands-on kits.
The Kids’ Science Challenge is a nationwide competition where kids learn about four fun scientific fields and then submit a question, problem, or experiment to be solved. The scientific fields are: flavor science, water quality, skateboard engineering, and the search for life in outer space. Winners will visit and collaborate with the scientists and turn their ideas into a reality – and they’ll be featured on Pulse of the Planet radio programs www.pulseplanet.com, Kids’ Science Challenge video podcasts or Dragonfly TV.
The Kids’ Science Challenge web site, www.kidsciencechallenge.com, includes downloadable science projects, fun videos, educational games, and lesson plans for classroom or after-school use that are aligned to National Science Education Standards.
The first 1000 kids to enter the competition will receive free science activity kits, which include a fingerboard (mini-skateboard), water test strips, flavor-tasting strips, and a CD with a secret coded message from “aliens.” Complete instructions are included. This is a great opportunity for a group science learning experience.
To set up a Kids’ Science Challenge team, check out the Parents and teachers page on www.kidsciencechallenge.com or contact info@kidsciencechallenge.com for more information. We're sending out special prizes to the next few teams who sign on, so now is a great time to enter!

Field Trip Planning
I would like to spend a few minutes at the January meeting on field trip planning for the rest of the school year. I will bring all the information that I've collected recently to the January meeting. (If you have any ideas, please bring the info!) Once I find out which trips are of interest to the group, I will try to start setting dates so that everyone will have plenty of advance notice about days and times.

The Oasis Center appreciated our Christmas Donations. You can thank Abigail Harper for delivering them herself! Since Oasis serves so many children, I thought that this might be a good ongoing service project for the group. We'll pick one item from their ongoing needs list each month. January will be Dish Soap month. (for washing dishes by hand, not dishwasher type) Bring a bottle of dish soap to any RCHEC event & at the end of the month, I will deliver them to the shelter.

CHEF Art Festival 2009 and New Photography Contest! This year our art festival will take place the evening of Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the beautiful Larimore Plantation in North County, just minutes from the Lilac exit off Hwy. 270. Students ages 5 and up are invited to enter one or two of their best efforts at fine art, and students 14 years and up are also welcome to display up to two photos for judging in our all-new photography contest. Please keep in mind that although the subjects of the artwork need not be specifically “religious” in nature, they must be uplifting and glorifying to God. Since this is a fine arts contest, we ask that crafted pictures not be entered at this time (no cut-and-paste, fabric painting, construction paper pictures, etc.). Scratch art is permissible, as long as the drawing was created by the child. Parents may definitely teach, coach, and give advice, but all artwork must be done by the student. In an upcoming email all details will be given, as well as a registration form. The cost per entry is $3 if mailing in, or $3.40 if paying by PayPal (to cover for PayPal fees charged to Anne Belley). You will also be informed of drop-off homes where you will take your children’s artwork before the festival. Registration deadline is February 1. The age group into which your child will be put corresponds to the child’s age at time of registration. If you have any questions about the art festival, please contact Anne Belley at mailto:belleys11@gmail.com.

I am a Christian author of a children’s nonfiction book that many in your group would enjoy, titled “Pocahontas, Princess of Faith and Courage”. The book is a retelling of Pocahontas’s story, including her conversion to Christianity.
As well as being an author, I am also offering online writing courses starting in January, 2009. Creative Writing is a five week course open to children of all ages, Research Paper Development and Writing is a ten week course offered to high school children. Both classes are $10 per week due one week before the class is to begin. This month I have put in a “Special Offers” ad as well as my regular ad in the Home Ed Directory-enroll three students and get the fourth enrolled for free (a course of equal or lesser value). This can be a combination of families, support groups, and/or co-ops.
Thank you so much for your time. Please feel free to email me at author@majaledgerwood.com or call 208-573-5595 with any questions or concerns. You can also check out my website at www.majaledgerwood.com.

RCHEC Christmas Party
Our December 5th RCHEC meeting will be a CHRISTMAS PARTY!
It will be a potluck at Abundant Life Church. (bring your favorite - a hot dish, finger foods, Christmas goodies, etc.) The games & activities will begin at 1:00 as usual, but you're welcome to get there at noon to get things set up and start munching!
So far, we have at least one game & one craft activity planned. If you have any ideas for other activities, please let me know. I'm sure we can get you some helpers if needed.
In the past, we have always had the children bring a toy for the Oasis Center in lieu of a gift exchange. I would like to continue that tradition this year. The center supplied me with a list of other things that we need as well which I will type up & post on http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/RCHEC/ . Feel free to bring anything that you'd like to donate. I'll see that it gets to the center.
We would like an RSVP for this meeting so that we can make sure we have enough supplies for the crafts & games. If possible, let me know, by December 2nd, how many kids will be attending.
Thanks,
Janet
***Because of the busy holidays, this will be our only scheduled activity in December. We'll resume our field trips, bowling, etc. in January.
