Friday, February 6  1:00 p.m. RCHEC Monthly Meeting at Abundant Life Church on  Humbert Rd in Alton.  Our February meeting will be a Valentine's Day Party for the kids.  (Andrea will still lead a discussion for the Mom's.)  If you have any shoe boxes  - or about that size - please bring them to the meeting.  We'll decorate the boxes, then let the kids distribute whatever they bring to everyone's boxes.  If your kids don't want to do Valentine's Day Cards, it can be candy, stickers, etc.  We may need cutting & gluing help from some of the big kids during decorating time.  Our Oasis Center collection this month is dish soap (for washing dishes by hand, not dishwasher type).  If you have a bottle to donate, please bring it to the February meeting.  The kids will pick an item from their ongoing needs list to collect next month.

Wednesday, February 18  9:30 CLASS at the NATURE INSTITUTE in Godfrey: Winter on the Preserve, which will cover topics such as Winter Ecology, Syrup Tapping & Animal Winter Homes.  The classes usually include a lesson, craft & outdoor observations, so make sure to bring coats, gloves, etc.  The class is scheduled for 9:30 - 11:30; everyone is invited to bring a lunch and stay longer to explore.  Refrigerators are available to store your lunch.  The cost is $2.50 per child - no charge for adults.  Please RSVP by February 6, or sign up at the February meeting.

Homeschool Morning at the Magic House, Monday, February 2, 2009, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
On this morning, the entire Magic House is closed to the public, and open only to homeschoolers!!
Price?  This month the price is again $5.00 per person, because the new part is finished.  The Magic House is 3 times the size that it was!!!!   Under 2 are free...adults must pay(sorry)   And no, you cannot use your membership.   $2.50 an hour is still quite a good deal for safe fun!!  It's really nice to just let your kids run wild (well, maybe not "wild") without having to worry about them--the building will be full of nothing but wonderful homeschool families (and nice workers).  Sign up via the SHARE website (www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share Click on Calendar and then go to the date, OR  e-mail Cathy at ekcjmullins@gmail.com.  OR come at the last minute.  Cash works or checks made out to SHARE--I am not able to accept a debit or credit card at this time.  I will be at the door collecting money.
Do not go to the old entrance.  We enter at the new part (sorry, can't remember the name for the building.)  Do not use the front doors either.
Note:  We need a minimum of 75 paid admissions to make this work (they need to pay workers to come in for those two hours), so sign up is encouraged.  But even if you did not sign up, please come--it's a big house!!!!  THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL HOMESCHOOLERS, NOT JUST S.H.A.R.E. MEMBERS...SO INVITE YOUR FRIENDS.
Other Days to Follow:     March 9

Kids' Science Challenge

Some Interesting Websites:

HOMESCHOOL REVIEWS - See what other parents thought of various curriculums.
I'm hoping you can help us spread the word about the Kids' Science Challenge to home schoolers in your area. We've created a fun way to turn kids on to science, and it's completely funded by the National Science Foundation, so there are absolutely no costs to enter and participate.

In brief, we're looking for mentors to help 3rd to 6th graders come up with entries for the competition. Along the way, we have a suite of online activities for kids and their leaders to explore, and curricula that teachers can use which relate the project to classroom Science Standards. The first 1000 Kids Science Challenge entrants receive hands-on kits.

The Kids’ Science Challenge is a nationwide competition where kids learn about four fun scientific fields and then submit a question, problem, or experiment to be solved. The scientific fields are: flavor science, water quality, skateboard engineering, and the search for life in outer space. Winners will visit and collaborate with the scientists and turn their ideas into a reality – and they’ll be featured on Pulse of the Planet radio programs  www.pulseplanet.com Kids’ Science Challenge video podcasts or Dragonfly TV.

The Kids’ Science Challenge web site, www.kidsciencechallenge.com, includes downloadable science projects, fun videos, educational games, and lesson plans for classroom or after-school use that are aligned to National Science Education Standards.

The first 1000 kids to enter the competition will receive free science activity kits, which include a fingerboard (mini-skateboard), water test strips, flavor-tasting strips, and a CD with a secret coded message from “aliens.” Complete instructions are included. This is a great opportunity for a group science learning experience.

To set up a Kids’ Science Challenge team, check out the Parents and teachers page on www.kidsciencechallenge.com or contact info@kidsciencechallenge.com for more information. We're sending out special prizes to the next few teams who sign on, so now is a great time to enter!
