Waste Not, Want Not

My blog entry titles are beginning to look like an excerpt from Poor Richard's Almanac!

As my quest for a streamlined home continues, I am finding that I have a lot of things that are supposed to help me get more organized--tubs and bins, binders and folders, books and crates.  All of which are only semi serving their purpose.

One such item is a sweet little red recipe notebook I purchased at a recent homeschool conference.  At the time, it looked perfect--the answer to my recipe nightmare (that is another blog in and of itself! lol)  It had a vast array of tabs and sleeves to make my recipes oh so user friendly.  However, it has done nothing of the sort.  What it has accomplished is gathering a 1" thick layer of dust as it sits politely on my extra table.  It is not helping me a bit!!

Tonight in a moment of epiphany, I realized that this (along with many other organizational type things) were not going to really fix my organization issues.  As FlyLady says, "You Can't Organize Clutter."  However, after this revelation, came the realization that I had spent a goodly amount on this special little recipe binder and I would never, ever get that money back out of it.

Tonight, I growled to my husband, "I hate it when I waste money like that!"

My husband in his wonderful way said, "I imagine there is someone who would just love that for a wedding present.  Don't call it a waste of money, just a re-allocation of funds."

Thank you, God, for a husband with perspective!

Jul. 12, 2006 - I feel your Angst!

Posted by 2cupsOjava4me
Recently my grandmother passed away, and after the funeral we had to go through her entire house because her son was pretty much going to gut the place and move in. It really did something to the inside of me. This was a woman who loved her "possessions" more than she loved her family. There was nothing thrown away. Everything was kept and we had to deal with decades of "stuff". So now, I'm systematically going through my home and if the item isn't: 1) Beautiful, or 2) Useful it's going away from this home. We can't take it with us to Heaven anyway can we? And tonight as I discussed this very issue with DH it dawned on me: "If I have all this "stuff", what relationships are suffering as a result of the time spent on taking care of the "stuff"?" I love people. People we can take to Heaven. Everything else needs to take a drastic backseat. Give me a healthy family and a good bed to sleep on at night, and all is right with the world.

Blessings to you,
Lori

You are WAY more patient than I...when I decide something is no longer of use to me, I want it gone NOW! No storing for gifting, or waiting for selling it. We usually donate somewhere we can get a tax write off...no matter how big or small LOL! Sometimes I wish I were more patient about things. I might actually recoup a little money from time to time.
I was busy decluttering tonight. (We are still trying to figure out where to put this child that is coming! :) Surely, if I throw out enough stuff, we can find room for her.
