The Little Girl ~ part 7
The Story
Father and daughter ride a bike together. Bicycles are ubiquitous in China. I often saw toddlers riding in their little seats while I lived in Shanghai. Here I am trying to create solidarity between the characters in the book and the common rhythms of Chinese life.
China
Population (July 2007 est.):
(That's a lot of bikes!)
Age structure:
- 0-14 years: 20.4% (male 143,527,634/female 126,607,344)
- 15-64 years: 71.7% (male 487,079,770/female 460,596,384)
- 65 years and over: 7.9% (male 49,683,856/female 54,356,900)
Advocacy
Do you know a university student from China or someone of Chinese descent? Invite them to read The Little Girl.
Of Ninevah, God asked
Jonah
, "Should I not be concerned about this great city?" God is concerned about the great cities of the world and so should we.
Pray
- that God would enlarge our concern for the great nation of China, whose citizens are 20% of the world's population.
- for a possible future edition of The Little Girl that will be set in India, a nation that also struggles with a gender imbalance and whose citizens are 17% of the world's population.
