I'd like to tell you about.....
.....some cute children's books I was introduced to.....

Yesterday, I was out browsing the internet for a devotional that I could read at a friend's baby shower last night. I came upon a great site called Devotionals by Donna where I found exactly what I was looking for! I e-mailed Donna, asking for permission to use her story, and she wrote back mentioning these children's books that she had written. Well, you all know me and my love of children's books! So, the rest is history......
Ouch Sunburn and No More Gunk are precious little books for children. They are currently sold as a "2 books in 1 deal" that you can purchase here and here. If you're like me, though, and have no patience, you can also get these books, individually, as e-books! (E-books! Yippee!!!) To check out the e-books, click here for Ouch Sunburn and here for No More Gunk. Instant gratification!
I was immediately attracted to these little books for 4 reasons:
-
They contain rhyme! I love rhyme, and I think it's especially attractive in books for young children. Catchy phrases make the reading these books fun, and children enjoy hearing it. Think Dr. Suess!
-
They have fantastic illustrations! Let's face it, children's books NEED good illustrations. They need to be eye-catching and fun. These are so bright and colorful that you want to stop and really look at each page before turning to the next one to read more. Oh, and they're funny too!
-
They are simple ways to teach kids about some very important things. Sure, you can tell kids the importance of brushing their teeth and using sunscreen, but it means nothing to them. Show them, by reading these fun rhymes and looking at the great pictures, and they'll understand AND remember. Gracie just happened to be walking by the computer yesterday when I was checking out these books~ the bright colors caught her eye and she said "go back, Mom, go back!" She wanted to read through them. I know, today, she could repeat back to me what she read and the significance of it.
-
At the end of each book, Donna sums up the story by offering basic tips. These, too, rhyme; so they're easy to remember and will stick with your children.

Donna J. Shepherd looks at everyday life and finds God's fingerprints everywhere. A columnist for The Dabbling Mum and NABBW, her articles and poetry have been published in Reminisce Extra, Just Between Us, Guideposts for Kids, Wee Ones, and more. Her devotionals and stories appear in Daily Grace for Women (Honor Books), Anytime Prayers for Everyday Moms (Warner Books), and The Best Grandma in the World (Howard Books) to name a few.
Donna's children's book, Topsy Turvy Land (Hidden Pictures Publishing, July 2005) has been described by one reviewer as "a perfect read for young children." Children's devos, Topsy Turvy Time, are shared monthly on CWAHM.
Her book, Ouch! Sunburn!(Guardian Angel Publishing), contains snappy rhymes along with 15 colorful and fun illustrations by Kevin Scott Collier, and helps children see the need to protect their skin in the sun. Sun Safety Tips in the back of the book reinforce the book's theme.
In No More Gunk (Guardian Angel Publishing), short, playful rhymes and Kevin Scott Collier’s humorous illustrations help children learn in a fun way the importance of proper dental hygiene. Tooth Tips in the back of the book encourage children to take care of their teeth.
For the past seventeen years, Donna's husband has pastored an Assemblies of God church in Ohio. Donna is pursuing a Theology degree. She's the Women's Ministries President, Adult Bible Class Teacher, pianist, singer, and speaker.

Hi, Heidi! Hooray that you have discovered Donna's books, too! Guess what? On Saturday Donna signed a copy for me! I met her face to face when we attended a writer's conference. She is a warm and generous friend. I reviewed her books here:
