Record-keeping, the essentials
This week's Heart of the Matter Friday Meme topic is record-keeping. I'm going to copy and paste the questions and fill-in with my answers.
Do you keep a grade book? I do not keep a grade "book", per se. I have forms I've created on my computer for each girl, for each subject. Then, each time they do a quiz or test, I go on the form and record their grade. Quarterly, I average them and track their grades that way. I've done it other ways over the years, but this is what works best for us.
Does your state require attendance sheets or a portfolio? Yes, here in PA we are required to turn in our portfolio. They don't require actual attendance sheets, though they do require proof of 180 days - I turn in our daily lesson plans, which shows what we did for all 180 days.
What are some of the best methods of organization that you have found to keep up with all of the school records for the year? Well....... as co-creator of The Schoolhouse Planner (TOS), I would be remiss if I didn't tell you what a wonderful planner this really is! We have included forms for both homeschooling and running your household, so it's all together in one place. And, we have even more great ideas for next year's planner - so if you like this one, you'll definitely want to check out the new, improved version, coming in 2009!
Are you an organizational expert or do you find it to be a hassle? I'm no expert, but I do tend to be perfectionistic. So, when I am creating my own forms for something, I want them to be "just right".
What about online forms--can you recommend some good sites to others? I have some saved in my favorites list, but mostly I've found it's easiest to do a search for a certain form I may be looking for. Actually, since the planner was released, I find all the forms I could possibly need right there, or I create my own.

Oh, I didn't know you were the co-creator of the homeschool planner. You famous person, you! And I saw an e-mail about that new TOS team something-or-other. How in the world do you do it all?
Have a great weekend. I can't believe summer is about over! I've plunged into teaching K and J to read this year, and it is so fulfilling. *she sighs in fond memory* It is almost incomprehensible that I would be homeschooling (if only for a season) my grandchildren!!! I don't feel like a grandma, no indeed. :-)
My publisher is hot about my literature guide for SFS. So much so that they actually sent it to the editing department to edit and then sent me the hard copy with all the changes. Yes, there are mistakes (go figure!). Once I fix them, Kregel will put it on their (new?) website. still waiting to see their new and improved site.
